I'm calling this early, but I'm calling it.

There are completely no incentives for anyone to stop this.  The baggers get to show how TUFF and PURELY IDEOLOGICAL they are in face of the Kenyan Lenin/Hitler-in-Chief.  Meanwhile, Obama gets to show the teabaggers as irresponsible morons.

It's win/win for every national-stage politician.  Sure, it fucks over a bunch of people who, you know, depend on government services and stuff, but who cares about them?

Yeah, that does make an unfortunate amount of sense.

America continues to insist that it's the best country in the world because it's America, even while Americans are tearing it apart because they're butthurt that the president is black.

If government shuts down:

1. Stock markets will plunge (well, dip, really. Everybody knows this is just for show and they're not going to go all broke over it).
2. Food stamps will not be sent out.
3. Mail will not be delivered (maybe).
4. Social Security checks may be withheld.
5. Government offices will not be open.
6. Medicare payments will not be made.
7. "Obamacare" will be on indefinite hold.

So, basically, it sounds like the Tea Party has found a way to implement their Ultimate Strategy without passing a single law.

It is amazing to me that Republicans are actually willing to do something that will even further weaken their party just to prevent poor people from having healthcare.

Well, Teabaggers are whiny bitches by nature, and their whole reason for existing is because of Obama.

I gotta ask, Nigel...At what point were you expecting rational behavior out of these whackjobs?

A lot of people will not get paychecks.  Fewer people with disposable income to inject into local economies.  Sounds like a winning strategy to me.

It is, if you're a drunk-ass congressman.

Not so much if you're, say, a single parent.

I keep hoping that at least a sense of self-preservation will kick in.

LOOKS LIKE NOPE.

I really don't understand how it could have ever come to this. Not the stupid hostage situation that gets wheeled out every six months or so with debt ceilings and new tax years.

But a system evolved and was built up around this, allowing this... Supporting it, putting the infrastructure in place that it could happen. What the hell happened?
