The GOP running the losers from prior primaries.

Bush beats McCain, wins general election.

McCain beats Romney, loses general election, because of having to toe the line in exchange for "his turn" (in his case, it was because they made him pick Palin instead of Lieberman).

Romney beats Santorum, and has a lot of favors to pay back.
