This was a quick and dirty PDF made in three hours to satisfy both a need to produce something and to procrastinate.
I intend for this to be a start, of sorts, of something more. What more? That's really anybody's guess.
Pay close attention to LITGASM, mentioned in the introduction.
Huzzah!
:mittens:
Jesus, Cram . . . this is really good.
I'll sign up for an del.ic.uous (or however the hell you spell it) account as soon as I can. Thus far, I have a ton of Discordian texts archived for LitGASM, including the Principia Entropius, "Condensed Chaos," "Omiterre Libellus," "Metaclysmia Discordia," and a few others. Pretty sure I have some Rob Breszny stuff waiting in the wings, too.
Once again, great job, Cram!
Inter :mittens:
This motivates me to actually produce something worth reprinting. Now if only I had adequate writing skills...
Great job, Cram! What program did you use to pull it together? In Design?
No, MS Word. And I had forgotten how much i HATE Word's formatting procedures.
here's some IRC discussion
tl;dr summary:
Producing these magazines will give people creative energy
Each issue by a different editor?
Themes for each issue
Compiling stuff .... fast > thorough
Payne damn you Cram
Payne everytime you do something like this, even in a half assed attempt, I want to do something Content and Creative related
Cram nice
Cram That's the point Payne -- as a group, when we see our work in print, it stimulates us to produce more work.
Cram There's a spark of energy that comes out of finishing a project - and I hope that stuff like this magazine sparks people into producing their own creative efforts
rwhn yeah me too, I'm taking some time off next week so maybe I can get something together.
Payne we should look at rotating editorships
Payne each issue by a different editor
Payne pieces chosen by him or her and what have you
Payne I'll work on compiling a bunch of good shit for issue two
Cram that's a good idea
vexati0n damn writer's block. i need to get laid by a thousand egyptian wenches or something.
bdsimpleton i should probably start being more pro-active and actually post on the boards
Cram one way we might do it is via del.icio.us tagging.
Cram like here's how that would work, using the GASM format as a template---
Cram you'd make a topic sayiing "I'm putting together an issue of Intermittens on the theme 'sacred chao'" (or whatever)
Cram "You go tag every post you can find that's relevant with the tag "Intermittens_Chao"
bdsimpleton and if two people tag the same thing?
bdsimpleton it just gets two tags?
Cram yeah
Cram then when you've got enough material, all you have to do is search for that tag, and you'll find all the relevant material
Cram That approach works best for projects bigger than PD -- if you're making stuff entirely out of stuff posted at PD, the thread x-post format is better.
bdsimpleton i dunno how del.icio.us works, sorry XD
Cram del.icio.us is very simple - you can learn how to use it in three minutes
Cram all it does is keep bookmarks that other people add. Lets you tag web pages, etc
Payne yeah
Cram It's really one of the best ways to link up with the other Discordian networks out there without having to interact with them on forums or myspace or Livejournal or whatever
Payne well, we'd be starting out with PD and POEE and other "local" disco sites anyway
Cram yeah
Payne until the del. idea got going
Payne so issue two should be relatively simple for me to get shit together for
Cram yeah
Cram all I did was go through the womp cabal bucket for graphics, and the Insightful Post Dump for text.
Cram The whole thing took like three hours
rwhn what about making specific content as well. Like someone says "We should have an article about [fill in the blank]" and someone says, "yeah I'm on it."
rwhn or are we really just compiling writings
Payne yeah, that's what I was thinking for rotating editorships
Payne each editor could "theme" his choices
Payne and make requests for specific topics
Cram Yeah
rwhn I think, eventually, we'd need some Q & A's. Like say Giggles interviewing Chef.
Cram I think that in a perfect world, an editor would make a proposition for a theme, and then people would start filling in the blanks... maybe take a week or two to produce an issue
Cram really I think the key is not to hesitate to output these things. Don't sit on it forever, don't worry about making it look so sexy it could sit on a magazine rack, just push it out and we'll distribute it.
Cram that's the problem with lollercaust - it got to be such a big deal, we never were able to PRODUCE it. It died on the table from being overtalked.
rwhn Cause I think if someone gave me an idea to write about, I could do that. I'm having a hard time just picking ideas out of the air lately.
Cram I hear ya
Telarus :mittens: on teh magazine Cram. Now I need to look past the cover.
Cram lol
Cram also, it's hard to use posts at PD in publications, because so few of them stand on their own, they're part of threads.
Cram Now if there was a way to publish threads as a magazine article, we'd be SET
vexati0n and there are ways to publish threads as articles, you just have to not use a BBS.
Telarus yah, threads need to be edited into a narrative for magazine type publication
Cram THAT might just be a matter of finding a visually appealing way to set them up... like taking the relevant parts of hte post and putting them in a word bubble coming out of a WOMP head
Cram like this sorta: http://blackironprison.com/index.php?title=What_is_The_Machine%28tm%29%3F
Can "Who Killed The Lulz" be a sort of recurring theme? As in, every publication will take some already-published text and replace the name of the main subject with "lulz," generally revolving around the theme of lulz being killed or disappearing.
Sidenote - anyone else having probs with this issue crashing their browser?
I get down to about page nine then firefox goes splodey :?
I put up on on Scribd. Maybe that will solve your problems, Pent.
http://www.scribd.com/doc/8085216/InterMittens-Vol-1
Not a problem - right clicking and downloading it did the trick but I just though I'd mention it in case anyone else was having probs
w00t!
I'd like to be an editor for an issue, if no one minds. I'd have to start trudging through the forums for stuff, but...
Also, :mittens: again, Cram. It is awesome!

I'd also like to give editing a try sometime, although I'd like to put it off until after the holidays, simply because I will be away from computers for awhile during festivities, both Thanksgiving and Jesus-mas.
And Valerie: if you're wanting to do the editing really soon, a good place to start trudging through is the "Or Kill Me" section, because the rants lend themselves well to the magazine format, being both long and self-contained. I will be going through that section tomorrow and posting some of the really old (relatively, as in old for these boards . . . 2003) rants from people like Trollax, Hugh and others onto the "Insightful Post Dump" thread. Unfortunately I only have internet access at work (yeah, I'm a worktime slacker), or else I would get it done tonight.
awesome! i'll spam this to some friends
maybe sometime i'll have the time to try out Scribus (opensource layouting program, probably not as advanced as InDesign, but probably easier to layout stuff with than Word) and help out.
This is truly wondrous Cramulus.
It shows just how little work you need to do to pull off one of these. Srsly.
Kudos and thanks.
Now I feel the need to write something as well.
ETA: is the Etc. Discordia getting off the ground? If not, cannabalize the better articles for issue II.
Looks great. I'm still amazed you put it together in only 3 hours.
:mittens:
I'm fielding Issue Two.
More details as I make them up.
Excellent, Payne!

may I suggest? don't wait in line to make an issue - begin working on it now, even if only in the conceptual stage.
-and also don't overthink it:
The first one you make will be the most challenging, so I suggest just firing it out of your brain like you're clearing a bong

Ack! Um, it's going to have to wait at least until this next weekend. This is my last week of school before Thanksgiving holidays, so I'm a tad busy. Also, I've never done anything like this before, so I'll have to figure things out.
Fantastic work Cram.

Repost from other thread:
From here on in, I would like to be notified when my work is being used beforehand.
What I post on a forum with people I more or less know is not how I would post to a new, unknown audience and I would like time to make any necessary edits or raise questions about the use of the essay in question. This does not necessarily relate to generally using my work elsewhere a la kopyleft (where an individual can highlight or extrapolate on the parts they wish to use) but the fixed format magazine/download, which does not allow for such feedback.

So a few people have mentioned that they have layout skillz
If someone would like to step up to the plate, I'd like to capitalize on that - issue 1 needs better layout. I can send an edited .doc for anyone that wants to toss it into a more magazinelike format.
Anybody interested?
I think it was mentioned before, but we may also want people doing 'editing' of copypasta to fix the context a bit...

I can offer feedback at this point, but I don't have the time to put it all together.
edit:
Positive elements of the layout:
• It looks highly amateur but in an honest way. Like you didn't try to polish the turd, you just shat it out without trying to dress it up in the slightest. It's not self-conscious about being ramshackle and there's something appealing about that.
• While the styling is amateur, you do have a few of the most basic design principles in play: The titling is big, bold and consistent. The body text is consistent. You also achieved a certain cohesiveness in that the amateur layout (sans cover) fits the amateur imagery (sans cover) for the most part. The "Fuck What You Know About Chaos" graphic also reiterates the cover style which both look more pro than amateur. So it's all woven together, however basic, it's still a kind of global dynamism.
• The amateur elements of the layout reinforce a key idea in the magazine: You may not be the best at _________ but you can still do _________ and participate. There's a certain informal atmosphere that the amateur layout evokes which fits with the content. It makes you think of actual people instead of suits.
yeah, shit, weren't we working on something already...?

Here's how you can avoid it:
Just put it all together as fast as you know how and don't look back.
Anybody can do graphic design at a decent level—you're surrounded by it on a daily basis, you have vast stores of intuitive knowledge. I couldn't tell you how to do it well, because I'm just a douchebag design student and my discipline is trivial.
Actually this has nothing to do with me still being hurt by Hoopla and Nigel, which I still am (don't worry though, I'll find a way to send an emotional bullet into your soft spots yet). I'm not going to give out tips because they'd be more problematic for you and myself than they would be helpful.
Your tools are probably not as capable as mine and I'm not familiar enough with your limitations to give tips that you can utilize. If you're inspired enough, it won't matter or you'll find a way around them.

ARIAL :lulz:
I'll be dropping by your books and key this Friday.
But you can go fuck yourself before then.
What the fuck? Was supposed to be a mood-lightener.
But I'll appreciate you bringing the books back, I really need them and I can't afford to replace them.

I'm done.
I don't get much out of these forums any more.
And I don't think it's a problem of garbage-in/garbage-out either.
Peace out, spags.

Perhaps he'll have greater resolve.
Many of us do, Dear Pinecone. :D Regardless, he's always welcome wherever I am.
Well, I certainly like Net a great deal. Perhaps we simply live on different spheres of implication, in which case I am really quite sorry for what I said, although I confess I do not think I can hold up to never saying anything flippant or callous again, so most likely any friendship we managed to re-forge would be doomed. :(
This shit is great. You have my gratitude.

Although, you should put out some hints and tips for everyone else too.
~~~Payne: Not entirely sure now that he wants to release something that looks like a "polished turd"
Surprisingly, Mythbusters proved that a polished turd looks quite exceptional. They used the dorodango method.
Holy Shit (almost literally)! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorodango
I would like my books back: it is over $200 worth of books that I cannot afford to replace.
I would like my Principia Discordia (Syn's version) back.
It's been on the front porch, waiting for you to arrive (as you said you would, but have not), since early this morning
Yes. Also I am fine with you leaving my books and key on the front porch, Net. Thanks.
Books received. Thank you. No key, but I will change the lock and consider any interaction done.
I misplaced your key when I moved.
Found it. I'll mail it to you if you haven't invested in a new lock and don't think I'm peabrained enough to have it copied for nefarious purposes.
I won't be going anywhere near your residence if that's what you mean by interaction.
Also, flounce over. Meltdown in cooling stage. I'd be crazy to avoid this entire place on account of two part-time shit-stirrers.
First mod to read this, please to prune this drama into a new thread called Font Argument Cabal in Apple Talk.
