First track of the new album by Nynke Laverman, her previous album she did Fado's ... in Frysian. Which was interesting, but you have to like that sort of thing (Fado's are traditionally Portuguese lamenting songs).
This album and track is more crazy, insane, scary. Still sung in Frysian, but she got her inspiration from traditional songs by some nomadic tribe somewhere (yeeah..), anyway, album's really cool and the artwork seems inspired by Dali (the elephants with the really long stick legs), and it's all a bit reminiscent of "Strange Times", to me.
Thanks for posting, Trip! That was different, but i liked her. I don't think I've ever heard Rs rolled like that.

SoCalled - You Are Never Alone
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51x4bOSv1kL._SL500_AA240_.jpg)
SoCalled does klezmer hip-hop (yes, he's a Jewish rapper). However, he doesn't actually sing in this song, and it's more hip-hop than klezmer. The artists singing are C-Rayz Walz, Doris Glaspie and Katie Moore. It's a pretty unusual piece, but it feels very strong to me. The first time I saw this video, I had ordered the album before it was done playing.
While I like the song by itself, the video is definitely worth watching.
Thanks! Formenter, arafelis.

It took me quite a while to get into this track since the chugging, synthetic, bowed strings at the beginning felt as silly as they were catchy, but when I finally absorbed the whole song I went mad over it. It's a shame I can't speak Polish, but if her songs with English lyrics are anything to go by, it's probably highly imaginative and well thought-out.

This is easily my favorite rock instrumental. It's a building piece, slowly but surely working its way up from some soft piano, introducing some subtle e-bowed guitar, building to a climax of slightly feedbacked yet resonant guitar and blast-beat drums, before fading back into piano. This is a short version of it, the full version with an extended piano outro is in the 10 minute range.

Bluegrass is not garbage. Bluegrass can be shitty, just like any genre of music. But it can be simply beautiful, or fast-paced and exciting, too. There are some shitty rock bands and great rock bands; shitty DJ's and great DJ's; shitty rappers and great rappers.
There are talented and musical bluegrass players; calling their work garbage because you don't like the sounds of their instruments, don't like the vocal style, don't like the way it's presented, or don't like the people the music is associated with is narrow minded and cockish.

I hope to the gods you aren't referring to bluegrass yodeling, because that is my chief reason for hating bluegrass.
The banjo can be an amazing instrument if used by non-muppetfuckers (example: The Public Enemies bank robbery song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhiO8rT_LnA)). The problem is, the banjo and mandolin are played by this kid:
Now if someone without a history of inbreeding in their gene pool were to say, "bring it back" and reclaim the instruments normally associated with bluegrass, i wouldn't have nearly the amount of contempt i have for it.
But that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

No, that's what modern country is. A bastardized form of Southern Rock overly marketed in a way to weasel $150 a pop for Kenny Chesney tickets out of the pockets of the welfare-endowed white trash of the Nation.
oh well, looks like it's back to emo for me....toasterbathtime.
I also find that Bluegrass is more instrumentally involved than rock and pop music being sung with a twang and cowboy hats, but prior to meeting General Stuart, I rarely listened to either except for when I'd go visit my friend who's a DJ at the local country station and muting the amazing callers he got.
I think that "country" as a brand name has gone way off the mark from what it used to be and should be.

Bluegrass yodeling and Tuvan throat singing are not at all related. Here is throat-singing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0M3YFK3sJ54 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0M3YFK3sJ54) Notice that most of the time he is producing at least two pitches with his voice, one in in the normal register, one a few octaves above it.
Here are some musicians who have "brought back" some of the traditional bluegrass instruments: Bela Fleck, Tony Trischka, Pete Wernick, Sufjan Stevens, Tim O'Brien, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas.
Now the two people on this list who don't really play bluegrass so much, but bluegrass instruments, are Bela Fleck and Sufjan Stevens. Stevens has been known to pull out the banjo on occasion, along with 80 other instruments. Here is a sweet little ballad, one of his more popular songs, which is just him and his banjo:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4tkiGvV_ek (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4tkiGvV_ek)

Yes, very. I guess they're ok, my only real beef with them is claiming to be grunge when they don't sound grungy in the slightest to me. Now Mudhoney, that's a grunge band.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbmULwkTXio
Though I suppose I'm approaching it all from a biased punk rock perspective.
Pearl Jam are just rock, rly. I never really thought of them as Very Grunge, just a little bit.
and dont get hung up on wut some music journo or A&R man calls a band.
a band is good, or a band sucks, this is mostly subjective.
I enjoyed the Mudhoney tho. :D

The Dynospectrum - Armor
Dynospectrum is a hip-hop band from roughly the time period when Wu-Tang was everywhere. They only released one album. The band was made up of producer ANT (of Atmosphere) and MCs Slug (again of Atmosphere), Mr. Gene Poole, Beyond/Musab and I Self Devine. It was really hard to pick just one song because every song off their album is simply perfection. In case someone wants an actual description of why it's so good, I want you to imagine hiphop and film noir mixed together. This would be as close as you'd get.
Slug's left the door open to another album happening, which I'd fucking kill to see. And as far as I know there's no bad blood between members, so it's very possible.

Our Lady Peace's Thief: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCT7dKtjkZE
The story behind this song is, from my understanding of it, is that the band met the girl mentioned at the start of the video and she really touched their lives. She had an inoperable brain tumor and this song is kind of their way of talking about it and coping. The song actually made me cry the first time I heard it, and then again when I finally saw the video. I don't know, it was just kind of powerful to me. 4AM, Innocent, Clumsy, Starseed, and Made to Heal are some of my other favorite tracks. But that's just a small smattering, I can't really pin down a favorite album let alone a favorite
song.

I kind of had enough of it when Grosse Point Blank came out. That song was EVERYwhere after that.
I don't even know what that was, and am rather skeptical that it put the song out to the extent that Wayne's World put Bohemian Rhapsody out there. Besides, Under Pressure IS a great song, so I don't think that is a bad thing.
Rev. WHN,
Grosse Point Blank was that movie with John cusack and minnie driver and Dan Akroyd, where J.C. plays a guy who left his high school prom date on the night of the prom, and hasn't seen her since until his 10 year reunion. Thing is, now he's a hitman. JeremY Piven was in that one too. Man, I can't believe you've missed it. It was around 1997, so, the internet wasn't that popular then. I know that things that are sort of pre internet, or things that aren't 'viral' usually go under the radar. Well, after the movie, under pressure was used in many marketing campaigns in the u.s. I seem to remember hearing the chorus with david's voice on a cell phone commercial recently. Anyway, it's there. You either don't watch much TV, which is good, or you are missing out on an AWFULLY good movie, not so good.
Never knew so many horrible people have covered that song until now, though.
Are you sure none of this is ringing any bells?
edit - fixed incorrect details about the movie.

Holy Shit!!! This is awesome!!!!!
reminds me a bit of an artist I read about a little while ago that used glitter paint "to represent quantum theory" ... the way they sing about "accelerate the proton" in a song about string theory ... "i don't trust the bible", so yay atheism!
singing atheist songs that diss the bible while not knowing fuck all about the science you're quoting, is about as cool as punk songs that diss the government without knowing fuck all about politics (YAY ANARCHY).
apart from that, I dig their sound. but I'm a bit disappointed in your reactions of "amazing!" and "holy shit awesome" just because it's a song with an atheist theme ...
actually i was referring the post above iasons...i just quote wrong. I didn't even see Iason's post until you point it out.

Really? You got ALL of that from "Holy shit this is awesome"? Ok.
Wow, Im really glad that you took the time to explain to me. I don't remember ever mentioning anything about the songs 'atheist theme'. I also don't ever remembering mentioning ANYWHERE that I prefer atheist themes or anything like that at any point in this thread. I just thought it was about posting cool songs. Niiiice, I thought I knew this artist from another track,
but I was confused with track 1 of opensource.code (http://www.discogs.com/Various-opensourcecode/release/68423) which is very different, minimal/ambient click techno sort of, nice because it's very very quiet sounding, good for those really late/early magical moments at airports or railway stations, changing a train, and you're sweaty from the train and cold from the concrete and your body hurts and itches from being up all night in a small coach and your throat hurts from dry stale air and cigarette smoke. Dawn won't be there for another 30 minutes and you found a cold but nice place to sit with a view of the skyline and tiny neon lights and a bridge and maybe a lost cathedral or something. And you've got some time to kill.
... I should probably make a mixtape for that or something :-P
I'm also making a note that I should totally rip and steal the deliciously clean beat-loop from the intro of that Syntax track (if, hopefully I'll find a tool that somewhat allows me to make mixes in the way I could with Ableton did, except open source in Linux--Freecycle (http://freecycle.redsteamrecords.com/) looks very promising but I haven't had time to try it yet).

Forget it, we're going NOWHERE in the FIRST place,
This time,
This time, Gotta get OUT there, OUT there, in the STREET,
This time,
We'd BETTER get out, show what we've GOT,
This time
We gotta show all we've GOT is each other,
This time,
This time,
This time,
This time,
This time,
This time,
This time,
This time,
I love you,
Sometimes things go wrong,
I don't like,
It's my HEAD, it gets in the WAY,
I love you,
But sometimes things go wrong,
AH, my Head, my HEAD gets in the way,
I love you,
Oh, WHAT can I DO about it man,
I can't do NOTHING cuz my BED'S too Warm!
I can't do NOTHING
I don't wanna get out of BED,
Ah, yeah, I LOVE my bed,
Aw, my bed's so WARM,
Aw yeah,
WHY do I make MISTAKES?
WHY?
Why does everything just seem to FUCK UP,
All around me?
I don't know,
I LOVE you,
SOMETIMES things go wrong,
sometimes things go wrong,
I won't change,
I WON'T change,
I want to posess,
everything I own,
I'm not prepared to let it, GO,
Aw,
I'm letting it go man,
I'm gonna let it go,
I'm gonna CHANGE!
i'M LETTING IT GO,
I'm gonna love THIS moment,
THIS moment, THIS one,
This moment, NOW,
THIS moment,
Forget about the last one,
This time,
This time,
This time,
This time,
This time,
This time,
THIS TIME,
THIS TIME,[/i]

Aaaaand babelfish fucked that one up.
no time to do a manual translation now.
Not much lyrics:
"Poop in your head. Poop in your head. Shall I have a good shit in your mouth? Poop in your head. Poop in your head."
Maybe I missed a phrase. Such a wonderful song.
"What does it matter, as long as you believe. Poop in your head. Poop in your head. What does it matter? Delicious, yeah yeah. Poop in your head. AAAAAAAAAAH"
Rainbow - Catch the Rainbow
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3VgV31vmUE)
I realize this a rather simple song and there's not much to it but something about it really grabbed me this morning. I think it might have been the dark airy vibe mixed in with the only slightly more intense crescendo part where Dio goes "come the dark." Then it transitions into this hollow, lonely guitar solo. :D

My favorite part of the lyrics:
QuoteDeath and Money make their point once more
In the shape of philosophical assassins
Mark and Danny take the bus uptown
Deadly angels for reality and passion
Have the courage of the here and now
Don't take nothing from these half-baked buddhas
When you think you got it paid in full
You got nothing - you got nothing at all.

Robbin' Hood Theory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEAg2EMyOWY)
Quote
If we're not schooling the youth with wisdom
Then the sins of the father will visit the children
And that's not keepin' it real
That's keepin' it wrong
Now that we're gettin' somwhere, you know we got to give back
For the youth is the future no doubt that's right and exact
Squeeze the juice out, of all the suckers with power
And pour some back out, so as to water the flowers
This world is ours, that's why the demons are leery
It's our inheritance, this is my Robbin' Hood Theory
I seek Sun, deceive none, for each one must teach one
At least one must flow and show the structure of freedom
It's me done, 'cause petty things we don't need 'em
Let's focus to create somethin' great, for all that sees them
They innocent, they know not what they face
While politicians save face, genius minds lay to waste
If I wasn't kickin' rhymes I'd be kickin down doors
Creatin' social change and defendin' the poor

Prefered the second of the three, will have a further listen round on all, always looking for new tunes.
Lyrics all looking interesting, the second may have swayed it somewhat as the video was nicely done. There's also a part of my brain that initally dismisses white rappers as I get visions of vanilla ice movements, which is where a lot of rap tends to devolve to for cash.

Went to see them a couple of years ago, it was excellent!
I just downloaded the shit out of some old synthpop band called "Information Society" and it's
completely awesome with zillions of samples and ancient 808:1fap: synthesizer beats and is what i've been listening to all afternoon
especially Mirrorshades (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WVE47X57qQ) about 6 times:
She wore mirrorshades.
And I can't explain the thing about her mirrorshades.
But I know that I can't live without her mirrorshades.
And I kind of lose my mind about her mirrorshades.
And those strange attractors that surround her ...
fuck it, now I require a short skirt, a long jacket AND mirrorshades :argh!:
Information Society were great. I was never a huge new wave fan but there was something about the IS sound that appealed to me. Great hair too.

I'm discovering that I might be a bit of a new wave fan without having ever realized it.
Also their more recent albums seem to be not at all that cheesy and would appeal to the clubbing "gimme something more than just dubstep" peoples.
But Mirror Shades is still the best from all of their tracks I've heard so far.
