whether or not you become a giggling moron pretty much depends on the dosage and how used to it you are.

Please note the phrasing:  "a hit".

Not "18 hits", not, "sucked an enormous amount of smoke", but "a hit".

a single beer won't get you fucked up.  and you're supposed to sip whiskey.

If BMW said the girl took a hit out of a 5-foot (1.5 meter) bong, that might be different.

But how can you possibly smoke in moderation if one hit fucks you up?

Even a lightweight drinker won't be hammered after one tequila shot.

Also, a spash of a good-quality (i.e. for drinking) Fino Sherry might be nice.

Personally, I think the smokey saltiness of a smoked ham hock would really jazz it up.

Other than that, how about a bay leaf?

What about smoked hock, pancetta, jamon serrano, or knockwurst?

More seriously now, banjo is one of those instruments that I would love to learn. Its just another non-bowed lute, and for that group I have much love.

It's really easy to fret, because they're usually tuned to a chord.  It's the variety of picking techniques that are tough.  But if you're nimble, it shouldn't be too hard.  There are plenty of DIY interuction books out there.

Speaking of DIY, they sell make-yr-own banjo kits, too.
