A suggestion: If you are travelling, get a Gmail or other large space email account and email propaganda to yourself.  If its anything like the UK, the internet cafes and library will charge 5 pence or something similar a page.

It makes me wonder about the homeless that received a copy of TGRR's rant that I passed out last week, and if they have been enlightened. Just passing them out gave me a warm fuzzy.

I was poking around on my PC at home (until my wife came in, boy THAT was emberassing)
and I found a couple of older flyers/brochures.  One was the one-sheet of assorted meme-bombs that ended with the line "We cordially invite you to a jailbreak" another I think was a brochure that vex had come up with.  Anyway, would those be helpful here?

The latter, if formatted.

The former, only if arranged in a layout condusive to crack & peel stickers.

Also, there are TGRR's flyers.  I'll ask him if he wants to move them in here.

Yes, but should I strive for ECMA-262 compliance or just do a bare-bones "this is an int, that's a function, and it'll never be JIT'd because I don't want to ship GCC as part of my runtime"?

Edit:  Apparently aokhost killed my site.  Same goes for the next post.

The best parts of those are the ones that didn't get non-proportionally scaled.

If you want a vertical font, use a vertical font, don't squish and distort it.

Those parts look amateur.

You also might consider adding more leading so they're easier to cut out.

I dig it!

They're a good size, easily spottable from a distance. A lot of the ones on net's fullpage pdf are hard to notice, so I dig the options we now have.

FUCKING VICTORY

Scribus has a download for the Avery 8660 format. I can't really recommend it though, because it's buggy as hell and crashed about 12 times while I was putting this together. The frequent crashings, along with the fact that it takes a good 3 minutes to walk to the computer lab (where I get 40 pages per day of free printing) at a brisk pace, and also the fact that the template is imperfect and my first several tests came out badly (at which point I would have to walk back to my dorm room and make adjustments to the file), combined to make this shitty-ass label sheet take a good four to five hours of work to bang out.

And I would put it here for you twits to download, except the Attach File option seems to have disappeared :?

Edit: never mind, I'll use mihd: http://mihd.net/oivtnq0

YOU ARE A POPE trifold flyer. As I've mentioned once or twice on POEE, I like trifold pamphlets for handouts for a number of reasons, and I've re-formatted a few things into trifold for great justice. It's formatted so that a Popecard (or card of some other kind, I suppose) can be taped over the 'lick here' box. Enjoy. Or, y'know, don't.

I like these, especially the second one. My suggestions would be to use fewer exclamation points (mimicking the style of official government anti-terror propaganda, which doesn't tend to use many exclamation points) and maybe making the first one a little less obviously a joke. But that's just me... I like posters that are subtle enough that someone will probably take them seriously at first.

Thanks. I was thinking the same thing about the exclaimation points and I agree about the subtlety. I have another idea that I'm working on. I'll post it up when it's finished.

Agree with nigel. Good posters! less exclamation points. Less hyperbole.

Anti-Swiss poster (http://www.scribd.com/doc/21609477/Did-You-Know)
A government issued poster would never refer to something as "up to no good" or "evil" ("axis of evil" nonwithstanding). Use the same fnord-words that you'd see if it was in the paper or evening news. Instead of "Evils of Neutrality" maybe allude to a Sin of Omission.

riffing on the Good Samaritan law might be funny too. Like that these neutral countries are complicit in evil because they're not trying to stop it.

It's a funny poster - obviously a joke with the "swiss cheese punchline". If you were to create a more straightfaced version of this gag, I'd strip out the punchlines

Don't Be Afraid! (http://www.scribd.com/doc/21476247/DON-T)
Like Nigel, this is my favorite of the two. It might strenghten it to draw a contrast between the "dangerous" terrorists and the "friendly" authorities.

Both posters could use some images. Official looking iconography is always a good bet to make a poster look official. Throw a letterhead on there, and/or an official town seal. I'm a fan of says-it (http://www.says-it.com/seal/) to generate seals.

and many, many posters will stay up longer if you include this mystic glyph:

AUTHORIZED FOR PUBLIC POSTING, CODE 00523E.
     OFFICE OF THE TILER

"Tiler", by the way, is a masonic title. If the cops are illuminati as well, this might send them directly to mindfucked.   :fnord:  :tinfoilhat:

@Nigel-Thanks!  :D

@Cramulus-Awesome advice! I appreciate it greatly! That say-it site is the mutha-fuckin'  :fap:!

I've redone both posters.

Swiss Terror. (http://www.scribd.com/doc/21763849/)

Changed wording and added some images. I'm mainly going to be printing this is gray-scale, so hopefully the Swiss flag won't be so in-your-face.

Don't be Afraid! (http://www.scribd.com/doc/21764986/Don-t-be-Afraid)

I think this one cleaned up pretty well.

Now, I know that it may not mean much to you guys, but I have never been good with computers, but the encouragement I received has motivated me to attempt to teach myself these things (heck, I didn't even know what a "hyper-link" was until today ), and I want to thank you for that. They may not be much, but they are my first creations and I am very proud right now  :D

In fact, this is the first thing to motivate me in a while. I couldn't sleep last night because I was thinking about this so much. And today I ditched class to come home and work on them. This is so addicting. I'm soooo going to make more.

Nice work, Dimo! These look much more eye grabbing, and the language is much sharper than in the first pass. These things usually take a few passes and a few pairs of eyes before they're kallisti gold.

minor: the swiss poster has a dangling second page, which is blank

It really is worth your time to figure out how these tech things work. The more I learn about computers, memetics, and design, the more fluidly my ideas seem to disperse through the aether. And with the internet getting so pervasive and ubiquitous (I mean it's on people's phones now for chissakes), it's only going to get more important to know how to use it effectively.

Some new stuff I've been working on...

Do the Right Thing! (http://www.scribd.com/doc/22170321/Doing-the-Right-Thing)

I forgot to convert the pics to grey-scale, so you'd have to just print them that way to make them look right.

This next one I made specifically for slipping into copies of my campus newspaper.

Orange Alert Sale. (http://www.scribd.com/doc/22170238/Orange-Alert)

This next one was inspired by Toa (http://toa267.deviantart.com/gallery/)'s Chao series, which I enjoy due to it's simplicity. While I'm not really bringing anything new to the concept, I am trying to give it a little bit of my own spin and will eventually make some more.

You're Not Breaking the Law. (http://www.scribd.com/doc/22090738/Breaking-Law)

I was thinking about removing the "'till you get caught" bit.

As always, suggestions or advice are welcomed and appreciated.

All those mittens mean a lot to me, especially coming from you guys!

ToA-I just wanted to make sure that people knew that that particular flyer was inspired by the Chao series and direct them to some great stuff. Tell your friends I really like them.

Cram/Nigel-I'm learning a lot from you guys and the experiences (both in spreading and creating these ideas), beyond computer skills. I've learned to slow the fuck down, there's no use in rushing around to try and "prove my worth" anymore for me. It'll be ready when it's ready. I spent a few days beating myself up trying to do certain things on the computer that were difficult for me and almost gave up entirely. But then, as soon as I stopped trying so hard, the "Do the Right Thing" idea came to me, almost as if a daemon came into possession of my mind. It's been a weird few weeks filled with crazy dreams and visions, and I am very happy to be able to contribute something to such an inspiring group of people. I'm going to continue to make more... These are pretty good. I like the layout & font selection. They're definitely eye grabbing.

Here's another misc. tip - partially for you, partially for anybody that's making posters-----

One thing to be careful of with one-line-meme-bombs is that sometimes the closer your phrase is to sounding like a commercial slogan or catchphrase, the less memorable it is. The brain filters out most of the stuff it sees over the course of the day. You may be making a good point (ie, the last one in your set suggests that common sense is actually fairly uncommon), but remember that your posters are adrift in a sea of memes. As you walk down the street, you're seeing ads for concerts, billboards, bumper stickers, guys with sandwich boards handing out coupons, etc etc etc.

There is a war going on, a war for your attention. The trick isn't just to grab attention, but to maintain it. A cute catch phrase momentarily rises into awareness and then will be replaced by the next flashy thing to come along.

That is why I think Discordian posters should be absurd, surreal, mysterious, or otherwise itch your brain in some way. You can get by on being funny. The main thing is that the experience of the poster should be something unique which the target will remember later in the day, will relate to others.

Think about how many times you've seen the phrase "Buckle your seatbelt", or some other public safety notice. This is sort of what we're going for, except we're not concerned with physical health. Does it stick our in your memory? (probably not) When you saw it, did it change your behavior? (it might have, if you were unbuckled, and there was a hefty fine listed) What factors can make your posters more effective than that? A meme's goal is to get inside someone's head and change their behavior from within. In the "buckle your seatbelt" example, they do that by leveraging internal factors against one another. Namely, the fear of harm, and the reminder of financial penalty for failing to internalize the meme.

The Situationists thought that the best way to protest the dominant order is to protest from outside of it (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=20959.0). They tried to be surreal, confusing, misunderstood. They thought this gave them a certain outsider power. The phrase "My shadow is my graffiti" was a popular May 1968 slogan (http://www.bopsecrets.org/CF/graffiti.htm). I like it because it doesn't make a clear point that you can argue with. It seems to express some dissent, but not in a way which can be circumvented through discussion. You have a hard time explaining it to people. It sticks in the brain a little bit just because you can't chew it up and swallow it like the phrase "Shop at Sears" or "Drink Guiness for Health" or whatever.

A powerful meme creates a mental shift in the reader. Sometimes all it takes is a phrase like "Is this a dream?" to make people spiral into a cascade of self reflection and awareness of one's own thoughts. But it's hard, because you have to pierce through the veil first, you have to win the attention economy. The battle for attention is fought nearly every time you move your eyeballs. How are your posters going to win that battle? How are they going to throw a wrench in the MachineTM?

We have a bit of an advantage in that we are not a commercial venture. We are not trying to sell you anything. But we are marketing ideas, hoping to snare your brain into a train of thought which leads you our way. Perhaps you are intrigued. We leave you with little to follow up on, other than "the Discordian Society", a mysterious and nebulous entity if ever there was one.

Or maybe it's just about rearranging the MachineTM. If you make everybody that reads your poster smile a little bit, you'll have introduced a little warmth into a cold cold world. I think a lot of people are surprised when they see a poster which isn't trying to sell them something. We have no commercial interests. We just want to make the world better (for ourselves), and we can do that by making you relax and laugh a little. People aren't used to the idea that you'd waste your calories doing something that isn't tied to a bank account. They don't know that there are forms of protest which don't involve carrying a sign and shouting at (essentially) a brick wall. They don't understand that there are hobbies which you can make up yourself, you don't have to pick your activities from a predefined list of culturally accepted pasttimes. If putting up posters has mindfucked anybody, it's myself. And I wish I could show everybody what I've seen.

Indeed.
For example, though, what would you have done differently if you had made some of these flyers? I've come to realize that posterGASM, in and of itself, is an art-form, that requires a certain degree of skill, and it's an art-form that I find very appealing.
Now, I have friends that will look at them and say either "I like it" or "I don't like it," which, in the end isn't all that helpful because they don't really know what I'm shooting for (I don't fully know either) and, while your advice is always helpful, specific examples and suggestions about specific things would, for me, be the most helpful. It's tough, because I normally learn best hands-on, by example, from an actual person, and as I'm sure you could have guessed, I don't really know that many people IRL that are into this kind of thing. I have a small crew that hangs the posters, but they don't make them, or even make suggestions. (Robots. Kinda sad, actually). Anyhow, I'm totally going to keep working on this. It's the best thing since Pizza-Pie.

my advice is to keep stoking and stroking the meme bombs until you have something really potent.

Just clicking on a random poster... the meme is "HOPE ALONE CANNOT BRING ABOUT CHANGE"

which is a strong thought, a call to action of some sort, but does it actually motivate you? If you saw this on the street, would it make you change your behavior in some way? What is the function of the phrase, who is its audience, and how are you hoping they'll respond? Not all posters need a huge philosophical underpinning, but these ones don't strike me as terribly powerful.

But the trick is to just keep making them. Make a hundred of them. I have made a TON of shitty posters. These days I just print out the strong ones and put them in my messenger bag. Doing this over and over again gave me an eye for what works vs what doesn't, but it took practice. So keep at it! You're making great progress - keep challenging yourself.

as for your cabal, don't worry about them too hard. Whether they know it or not, they ARE a Discordian cabal. They may not be coming up with anything, but they're participants, they're actually getting out of their comfort zone and helping you do something cool, and that is fucking awesome. I have found that the hardest thing in the world is to motivate people to do something in 3D Meatspace. You just keep leading by example, keep discussing how this stuff works, and eventually, they will have internalized some of that energy.

Yeah, swine-flu has been done, but I put a little spin on it and directed it more towards the profiteering of companies that produce things like Purell hand sanitizer. There are hand sanitizer dispensers everywhere at my school, and this is going to end up right next to each one. If anyone else has hand sanitizer dispensers of another brand at their school/work, let me know and I can change it around to reflect whatever brand you need.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree, though I think the "ask questions" one is kinda' catchy and could get some momentum.

I've been putting a sort of dualistic, antipodal spin on how I place posters. For instance, I've been taking my more oppressive "illuminati" style posters (Do the Right Thing, Swine-Flu, etc.) and juxtaposing them with the more positive "Discordian" posters (Ask Questions, Have You Been Lied to Yet Today [ToA]) so if someone happens to read and buy into the negative posters, there's a contradictory poster right next to it to try to swing the reader over to the "good" team. I'm basically being subversive to my own stuff. I dunno if that's really beneficial, I just thought I'd try it out as a sort of experiment.

On a side note: I'm starting to fuck with myself. I get paranoid every time I see anyone wearing a Swiss-gear backpack or anything else that has a Swiss flag on it because of my own friggin' Swiss-Terror poster.

I'm liking the energy. My advice would be to continue boiling it down until it's as dense as possible. Posters exist in an attention economy, so you need to make your point as quickly and tightly as possible.

The message seems (to me) to be "Take control of your life." But it could also be read as "Manipulating other people is necessary, so don't sweat it." --Which I like a bit less.

"Not what you think" is my favourite, and "Agree to disagree" is my least favourite.. it didn't really force me to think about anything new. "Rethink" is simple and neat, and I really like where you're going with "Puppets". Though I'd probably be tempted to remove the black rectangle and mercilessly edit the text down by about 20% - I like the content but it comes over in too many words I think.

I think it's about being aware of actions, other people's and your own, and how they affect the world around you. Kinda' butterfly effect, chaos theory-ish. I'm gonna' fix the text but like I said, I need PICTURES and I'm LOSING MY MIND trying to FIND THEM!!!

Wow Dimo, these rock!

The picture works well - gives it a creepy edge.

Thanks Fiction. Yeah, the rectangles gettin' a bit old but for some reason I feel it needs a border... I dunno...

You could frame it other ways too, e.g.

I can take that down if you like - it's just for illustrative purposes.

I'm starting to think maybe put the picture on top, then headline, then text... I'll fuck with it later. Really think it needs a better picture, though...

And another, because it's kinda fun to do:

You are your own journey (http://www.scribd.com/doc/23072163/Journey)

Maybe too late to comment on but I really dig this.
Only thing I could suggest it it might look better with some upped contrast to a point of being dichromatic but I've always been partial to that look so feel free to disregard. Also, it could be a trick of the eye but the word "Journey" looks a lot bigger than the rest of the font in terms of font size. Personally, I think it would look better with an equal sized font.
But I really like the text, the picture and everything else. Pretty nice job.

Also as a general point, I've kind of grown a dislike for logos. The only ones I would use would be the DHS logo or others like it. In that case they're necessary to the message of the poster. In most cases stuff like the chao and the gynecological crab, they don't add anything to the poster or at the worst detract from it.

Cheers, that ended up being my favourite out of the bunch, too. I'm not really visualising your suggestions about the contrast, but feel free to remix/reuse any of the text/ideas in any way you want. You're right about the font size, I got lazy rather than trying to fiddle around with positioning

I get your point about logos. The idea for the posters was only to generate a "WTF?" response, but for conveying an actual message, I agree, they'd totally get in the way as they just create more questions than message-positive associative links.

I felt like making something silly, inspired by the evangelism thread - Come (http://www.scribd.com/doc/24164564/Come-US-Letter), and I accidentally did it in A4 (http://www.scribd.com/doc/24164508/Come-A4) as well.

I'd just like to point out that the asterisk also conveniently locates the Pope's butthole.

awesome, FP!

The letter t in "to" is kind of hard to read - I would nudge it so that the color shift doesn't break the word
and the text at the bottom - does it show up well in print?

alright I printed it out and answered my own question

the answer is:
-yes you can read the tiny text
-the rest of the text didn't show up for some reason
-only 3 of the pope cards showed up printed, and they're cut off. This might just be because this isn't an 8x11 image?

weeeird

anyhow, I dig the poster! Cool logo, too!

I'm liking it. Nice layout. And the logo is nicely designed, important to the poster, and doesn't take up the entire page. Really like it

FP, a tip if you're having problems with the contrast in an image and legibility of the text, try this trick. you use the dark colour (in this case black) you'd like to use for the bright areas of the image as a shadow, offsetted 1 or 2 points to the bottom-right (usually), and the bright colour (white in your case) on top of that:

Glad to know the tiny text came out. I've fixed the main text to match 000's suggestion - thanks! Do you mind if I borrow that text and upload it as a variant pdf?

I'll upload new versions once I figure a solution to the margin issue.

The US letter version should be the regular 8.5x11 inches, and there is no margin - it's supposed to bleed a little, but I don't know enough about printers to know whether most can actually support that mode of printing.. because the alternative of just scaling it to fit a page and manually guillotining it sounds like more effort than its worth.

I had this idea of doing completely different PD logos for each poster, but if anyone wants to reuse that one, let me know and I'll put it up somewhere - the .svg is only ~12kb.

I was bored, so I made this (hastily, mind you) to hang on windows on the top floors of taller buildings.

Emergency Flood Exit (http://www.scribd.com/doc/26978346/Flood-Exit-Only)

My sense of humor is a little fucked, is this even as funny as I think it is?

protip: add the instructions ("hang on windows on the top floors of taller buildings.") into the file's description on scribd, so when people from the net find it they'll know what to do with it.
