Hurricane Sandy is going to destroy all of the East Coast by Halloween. Take that Mayans! (sic).

Lame!
Come the storm and blow the flesh from this earth
Come the flood and wash away the flesh of this earth

Make the earth upheaval and swallow up the flesh of this earth

Hooray - I participated in Disaster Capitalism(tm) today!
Managed to get some storm supplies this afternoon and it wasn't too bad. Looks like our local Home Depot ramped up the battery stock. We also bought Jesus candles from the Dollar store. They cost a buck, burn for ages and have the added bonus of being fortified with magical Catholic POWERZ! Those Jebus candles used to burn for 7-9 days but they're all skinny and slanky now and the wax only comes about 3/4 of the way up. You're good for 2 days.
You know how a few months ago I discovered that I can quickly, easily and cheaply make my own lip balm out of ingredients I basically already have lying around the house anyway? Same basic deal with candles, except you have to buy wax and wicks. It's so ridiculously cheap and insanely easy to make your own candles (if you aren't concerned about them being pretty) that I recommend it very highly if you're anywhere that gets frequent power outages. You can make like 400 tealights in an hour for about $25 and be all set for a year. A decent tealight will burn for about 10 hours and does nicely sitting in the bottom of a mason jar.
Winning combination. Boston public closed and brookline public closed. That means work has a hurricane day

Likewise have had work cancelled. (They were going to make it optional, and "we'll pay you, either way" which is TOTALLY cool, because I am a temp and they have ZERO obligation to pay me a dime if my butt isn't in their chair.)
And, stuck at the SO's place. Assuming he doesn't get called in to work tomorrow (quite likely, he's an EMT), we get a day together without the kids.

Nothing much happening here. Wind is picking up but we're still ok thus far. Mostly everyone in Mrs Mang's office didn't bother going in and the highways are shut at 1pm anyway.
Good luck & stay safe everyone!
T is shutting down at 2pm today. Windy and a little wet, but nothing really happening so far. Days like this trigger my "lady of the manor" thing hard.
Is a category 1 hurricane strong enough to wash that urine smell out of NYC?
No. The only way to get rid of that smell is to burn the whole place down.
Interesting observation: with the strong advisory to take down lawn furniture, unsecured outdoor decorations, etc, a lot of campaign signs have disappeared.
Just on the short route to work, most of them have been taken down and the few that remain were mostly for Republican candidates. The road I took into work had a lot more Republican than Democrat signs before the storm, though, and if I wasn't at work during this thing I'd really like to see if there's a larger pattern.

QuoteIn a wordy and occasionally rambling blog on his website, chaplain John McTernan seems to link Hurricane Sandy (and a number of other recent weather-related trends and natural disasters) on LGBT people and President Barack Obama's recent backing of marriage equality. While most of McTernan's wrath is directed at Obama, he has some choice words for GOP candidate Mitt Romney, too.
"God is systematically destroying America," McTernan writes. "Just look at what has happened this year."
Calling Sandy "the most powerful hurricane on record" that "could do catastrophic damage to the entire Northeast," McTernan adds, "Obama is 100 percent behind the Muslim Brotherhood which has vowed to destroy Israel and take Jerusalem. Both candidates are pro-homosexual and are behind the homosexual agenda. America is under political judgment and the church does not know it!"

Lost cable in Providence. On phone now. Still no power loss. Wind has stopped and city is eerily quiet. They just came by to take the fallen trees so they can repair the wires, so it was really loud, and the really quiet again. The sky was clearing and I saw the moon. Meanwhile about 5 miles away there is no power and houses are washing into Narragansett Bay. It's a very creepy feeling.

Narragansett? Down by the water? Or the East Side? I know we didn't take you to Newport, you would have killed people.
New Jersey governor Christie just said their emergency services (EMTs, rescue) are officially off line.
If rescue is offline that means shit is so bad no one goes out no matter what. Fuck. Providence and Boston dodged a fucking bullet, if it wasn't for the hurricane barrier Prov would be gone.

I'm still running with the theory that our particular part of the city is on the same grid as the hospitals, so they will move their asses to keep us in power.
I'm running on the theory that politicians will cut the power, tell people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and people will feast on fat teabaggers until the water level drops.
It was windy, it rained a bit, we lost power between 9:00pm and 6:30am.
So, yeah. All in all it was fairly relaxing. A bottle of red wine, a nice home-cooked meal, and an early night.
Same grid as mafia, Luna lol. Still no cable here, but full power.
Things are not good on the south end of the state, resulting in being called early by the parents once they saw the news, thats not good for my university. and I cant get a hold of anyone on Long Island or the boros right now. :'(
Mom was in Port Jeff last night. No power, but things seemed ok.
Brother in VA, outside DC. A bit rougher, but all is well.
It's the lower side of NYC and Brooklyn I'm worried about, TBH.
South Shore got battered. Babylon has no power. I can't get in touch with cousin in Brooklyn.
Brooklyn accounted for. Didn't even lose power in Kensington.
Anyone still alive out there?
Boston seems to be ok. Im still really sick though so while villagers gone off to work im still in her room and cannot confirm.

See my response, above. California may LOOK close to Tucson, where Ecstasy and I both live, but it's not really close in real life.
Surprisingly kept power yesterday since usually our complex loses power anytime the weather looks at it funny. Boss's Sunday flight back from Florida was canceled, so he got an extra day of sunny weather and I didn't have to go in. I think Irene and the ice storms the last few years knocked out most of the weaker trees and branches by our apartment so not as much damage as there probably would have been since it's all trees, everywhere. Big tree across a road on my way to work this morning, dragging power lines with it, but not close enough to kill power at my office.
All in all, three day weekend, most of this area seems to be in decent shape, considering. The images from NY last night on the news looked pretty scary though.

Also, posting at PD is like ordering a drink at a bar in Little Santo Domingo. There's no actual age limit. If you think you're old enough to walk through those doors, you're old enough to get whatever's being served.

YES, BROWNIE'S BACK, IN "OBAMA ACTED TOO EARLY" FORM!
Now taking bets on who will he responsible for the first "Obama doesn't care about white people" comment.

It's not that fat fuck Chris Christie. He's PRAISING Obama's actions, and basically told Romney to fuck off. He doesn't want him in the state touring damage when he has a "job to do."

As someone who lives in the southwest, I can safely point and laugh at Easterners' misfortune.
It's clearly a safe bet to join an international forum and then point and laugh at the tragedies and misfortune in another region.
It makes you look like an AWESOME person.

Two things to bear in mind.
1. Ecstasy is about 16-18 years old.
2. Ecstasy is from Fizzy Grizzly, whose older members have the moral sense of, say, Fuckedcompany.com.
That being said, if you still want to rip him a new one, have at it.
I usually give kids a break, but 16-18 exhibiting sociopathic tendencies deserves to have a new hole ripped.

How's everyone doing?
Other than loss of power at 3pm on Monday (and still not restored) that's about it as far as it goes. Thankfully, my office has power, cable and a working toilet. Mrs Mang went to work so I decided to camp out here for a few hours.
I still havent left villagers. She recommended against me commuting yesterday because the weather was still miserable and she didnt think it would help me much. Skies over boston are grey but it doesnt seem to be raining.
Walked the kid to school this morning. Saw a lot of small downed branches, a couple shingles, and a damaged billboard, but all-in-all actually less bad here than it was in Irene. We're north of the city, which I think had a lot to do with that.
Still haven't fully dismantled the pillowfort.

I think, especially in out apartment complex where there are trees everywhere, but in general in this area too, that Irene and the last few ice storms helped bring down a lot of the weaker trees and branches. So there wasn't as much to fly around this time, at least it seems that way, since this storm was stronger, but there was less debris overall.
One of the windows at the entrance for work was apparently destroyed.
They've restored power at work, so I go back tomorrow.
South County (Washington County) here in Rhode Island is a mess. The majority of the area has no power, in fact, I think the university is the ONLY place that has working power in the area, and still, parts of the campus are still black. Debris is at a minimum, but they've been cleaning diligently. I saw linemen crews from Missouri and Tennessee, and Texas is also apparently in town.
They are not letting non-residents or buses past a certain point in Narragansett, and I'm unsure of the state of Rte 1. Matunuck and Misquamicut Beaches are gone, and will probably not have a 2013 season. Narragansett is seriously questionable. I have not seen it, but friends in the area have told me that most of the town is destroyed. (By "town" read "beachside clamshacks and burger joints.") I don't think Iggy's made it, Roger. :(
The front page today show beach cottages on Carpenter Beach in Matunuck totaled.
http://news.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/2012/10/inundated-cottages-rest-on-the-sand-at-roy-carpenters-beach-in-south.html
Not having a beach season in Rhode Island will destroy the state's summer economy. :(
Power back tonight at 6:45 pm. Thankfully, no damage..[phew].

Also - We have been trying to isolate Dimo to placate the weather. IT would be easier to get a Boson on the chopping block.
SERIOUSLY.
This is quantum grease we are dealing with, he slips out a different way every time we look at him!
He was leaving school as I was arriving, he told me last week that he usually hangs out for 4 hours between classes.
He's onto us.
As of 10pm tonight a busload of volunteers pulled into the Providence Hilton along with a small convoy of trucks. Not sure where they are from as they don't have license plates in the front. I kinda wish they would go to NJ/NY, but the response so far has been incredible. Nobody wanted another Katrina.
