Title: ECH Fall Tour 2010
Post by: East Coast Hustle on August 28, 2010, 04:25:05 pm
So, I'm getting 3 weeks off between Sept. 23rd and Oct. 15th. I'll be flying to Maine, then driving from Maine to Oregon on an as-yet undetermined route. I'm pretty sure that I'll be stopping in Lincoln, Nebraska, and I fully intend to swing south and hit Tucson, San Diego, and LA before heading north up the coast.

If any of you spags want to hang out, post it here and I'll do my best to work you in to the tour, geography and time permitting.

Here, if it's not too far out of your way after you leave Lincoln.

Charley - I'm almost positive I can swing through because I'll have to head south after Lincoln, but I'l probably only be able to stop for lunch and a beer since my time limitations probably won't allow me to burn a day and only travel 100+ miles, so Il'' have to push on after lunch.

Freeky - Assuming the desert doesn't eat me, and you and Roger haven't accidentally Tucson before I get there, you'll be in luck. I expect to see some of the weird.

Lemme know if your route takes you through Ohio.  Sounds like it is vaguely possible that it would.

Tucson is un-accidentally-able. It'll be here, and so will we. :D

It does, but I've probably already got one stop to make there, not sure I can fit in another, though I may be able to stop for a beer provided you're not far from I-90.

I know, I know. I suck at life. the problem is that Providence is not on the way to anywhere. Maybe I can swing down that way and parlay the southerly detour into a stop in Cram's neck of the woods too. No promises, but I'll try to work it.

I'm pretty sure that if you get to Fredville, then turn left at Albuquerque, it shouldn't be too much trouble to make a pitstop in Belgium, would it?

If you can make it in the first week of Octobre, we still need a capable ditch-pitcher on our team for the annual high speed team-Fierljep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fierljeppen)ping tournament during the Week of the Pickled Pig* festivities.

I hate NYC. If I can work it into my schedule (I do have some time constraints) I'll hit Providence and then cut over towards you. IIRC, I can get back up to the southern tier expwy from there without too much trouble. If not, I'm pretty sure I can find my way to I-80 easily enough.

ECH are you in the ocean right now? With the storm?

I'm in teh ocean, but Danielle is northeast of me and moving away (though it's driving some hellish swells our way) and Earl is southeast of us and too far away for us to be getting any action out of it. Might make a mess of Hampton Roads when it gets up this way though, but we'll be docked by then in a fairly protected place.

yeah, it is. We're not getting any wind or rain but Danielle is pushing some huge swells our way. They were 14 feet yesterday (just about everyone was sick), today they've calmed down to 8-10 feet and should lay down to 6ft by the time we round Cape Hatteras.

Seen it, and also done it before. I'm camping in the Explorer the whole way so I'll have plenty of food and water, flares, and both my handgun and carbine rifle. I'm also getting a radiator flush and full tune-up before I leave Maine. And I have roadside assistance through my insurance and don't plan on getting off I-8 so I should have cell signal if I need it.

Well shit....as is so often the case in this industry, all dates are subject to change.

In this case, the 3 week shutdown of the project that our next contract is for has turned into a 2 and a half week shutdown. I have to be back in VA on October 10th instead of the 15th. In the interest of spending as much time home in PDX as possible, this is going to mean I have to shorten my road trip.

Providence and NY, you guys are bridesmaids AGAIN. I swear someday we will hang out, but not this fall.

Fred, you're just about a long day's drive from Portland, ME, so we're still on unless something even more fucked up happens.

Charley, we're gonna have to wait until next time. Even going through KS will cost me a night at home, let alone stopping.

Dok and Freeky, we're down to about 50%. I'm pretty adamant about still seeing my friend in San Diego, which means I have to drive through Tucson, but spending the night there might cost me a night at home. Still trying to figure out a way to make it work, I'll get back to you.

Lizzay, I'm definitely stopping in SF....but...I'll be getting in late at night and leaving early in the AM so I probably won't have time to get free to meet up for side adventures.

Khara, I think my new tentative planned route will take me through St. Louis, and if I push hard that might be doable in a day's drive from Fredsville. If you want to hang out and you have crash space, let me know. I think you offered it once before on one of my tours or I wouldn't presume to ask, so if I'm wrong don't feel bad about saying so.

If I still end up swinging south and stopping in SD and LA, that's totally doable. If I have to shorten my trip and come into SF on I-80 I won't be able to make the detour. I'm really hoping I don't have to be back to the ship until the 15th, which will give me time to swing south.

OK, my time off is finalized. And much shorter than it was originally supposed to be.

Fred, I'm leaving Maine on the morning of the 27th (maybe even late the night of the 26th), I should be in your neck of the woods on the evening of the 27th.

Z^3, I'm hoping to leave Ohio early the morning of the 28th and be in Lincoln that evening. Not sure I can make that in one day, but I'm'a try.

Net & Siggy, I'll be in PDX on the 2nd and fly back out the morning of the 10th, and during the week I'm there I'll be in Seattle for a day or two, so it might make sense for all 3 of us to go grab some beers together one night.

Everyone else, I wish my job didn't mean that my plans always change at the last minute, but it does, and I'm sorry I won't have a chance to stop by and hang out. The good news is that I'm supposed to get an entire month off in January and I'm planning on using that time to move back to Maine (mostly for tax reasons, since I'll only actually be there a month or two out of the year). Since it will be January, I'm planning on driving down to LA, then driving across the southern part of the country, so...Lizzy, Roger, and Freeky will get to see me then and Cram and the MassIsland clique will either see me then or sometime as I'll be back in geographical proximity. If there's anybody else on the I-80/I-84 corridor that wants to hang out (I'm looking at you, Vex and Badge), let me know and I'll try to make it work.

Cool, I think if I push hard and start early I can make SLC from Lincoln in a day. Be a LONG day, but probably doable. And if I do puss out and make camp somewhere in western Wyoming, I'll have enough time to stop in SLC for lunch and still not blow my timetable.

Well, if you hadn't I figured we would just go find someplace full of cornfed yahoos and MAKE it a good bar.

And by "good bar", of course, I mean the kind of place we like to drink in.

Ok are you still stopping for the night with me or do I have to drink all this beer by myself?

If you are swinging through around food time you can stop for a meal with us!

Unfortunately, my revised timeline pretty much constrains me to the I-80 corridor, which leaves the Lou out, unless I manage to leave Maine a day earlier than planned, which depends on my mechanic and how quickly he can put a new axle joint in and fix my broken 4WD hub. Plan on not seeing me, but I'll PM you and let you know if I manage to get outta Maine on the 26th instead of the 27th.

I'm currently in beautiful Astoria if you have plans to visit the coast. If not I could probably take a day trip up to PDX if you want to chill. Plenty of hipsters in that area to take a swing at.

Oh, don't I know it. My apartment in SE is about 10 blocks from Hawthorne.

I'll probably get out to the coast for a day while I'm there, but it's more likely to be somewhere between Lincoln City and the Dunes. But I'm hoping that Net, Siggy, and I are going to have a "PD night out" at some point so if that looks like it's happening I'll drop you an invite.

"PD night out"

This is much needed in my life. Just tell me when and where.
