Title: Why is meditation?
Post by: monad on February 24, 2014, 07:41:37 am
I was just wondering if any of you relatively intelligent yet curious-minded people had any theories on why meditation is possible, how it works or how we came to have such a capacity?
Why does it have the benefits it does?
From an evolutionary or biological perspective.
I haven't the foggiest meself.

What makes you say that?
Is there already a thread on the subject I could read, at least?

What is your definition of meditation?
Without knowing that I can't answer this.

Meditation is the coma-like state brought on by patchouli poisoning.

Going by most descriptions I've heard, meditation is opening an interface to mind then staring at the login screen for a while because it "feels nice"

Meditation reduces cortisol levels and has a host of other benefits.

That either means  that you're doing it wrong, or perhaps, for you, you're doing it right.

The Meditation is a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean surrounded by the Meditation region and almost completely enclosed by land: on the north by Europe and Anatolia, on the south by North Africa, and on the east by the Levant. The sea is sometimes considered a part of the Atlantic Ocean, although it is usually identified as a completely separate body of water.

The name Meditation is derived from the Latin mediterraneus, meaning "inland" or "in the middle of the land" (from medius, "middle" and tatia, "land"). It covers an approximate area of 2.5 million km² (965,000 sq mi), but its connection to the Atlantic (the Strait of Gibraltar) is only 14 km (8.7 mi) wide. In oceanography, it is sometimes called the Eurafrican Meditation Sea or the European Meditation Sea to distinguish it from meditation seas elsewhere.

The Meditation Sea has an average depth of 1,500 m (4,900 ft) and the deepest recorded point is 5,267 m (17,280 ft) in the Calypso Deep in the Ionian Sea.

It was an important route for merchants and travellers of ancient times that allowed for trade and cultural exchange between emergent peoples of the region. The history of the Meditation region is crucial to understanding the origins and development of many modern societies.

Here's the Fractal Cult meditation, guarantees enlightenment in about 13 minutes.

First, intone the word OM. Draw it out so it takes a full minute to say.
Then, intone it again. Each one should take 30 seconds, so you say it twice in one minute.
Then, intone it 4 times in one minute.
Then, 8 times in one minute.
Then, 16 times in one minute.
Then, 32 times in one minute.
Then, 64 times in one minute.
Then, 128 times in one minute.
Then, 256 times in one minute.
Then, 512 times in one minute.
Then, say OM 1024 times in one minute.
Then, say OM 2048 times in one minute.
Then, say OM 4056 times in one minute.

then you're going to need to take a breath so take a break

when you're ready, say OM 16224 times in one minute, meaning you're OMing about 270 times per second.

If that doesn't enlighten you, it will make your face melt raiders of the lost ark style.

You People are all dumbfucks.  Meditation is what happens when two parties to a legal dispute cannot agree.  The judge appoints a meditator that listens to both sides and decides for them.

Ecremeditation is the only PROPER form of meditation.  It occurs when you realize that:

1.  You forgot to bring a book into the bathroom.
2.  You forgot to check the toilet paper supply, and you're all alone in the house.

Meditation is something that you use more of as you age, and different varieties.

You go to the doctor, he finds something else on you broke, so he prescribes you more meditation.

Meditation sometimes has certain sexual side effects. Most people hope for super penis powers, but that's usually not what is meant, from what I hear.

Meditation is the period discharge of blood and mucosal tissue from the uterus and vagina. Women typically stop meditating if they conceive or if they are breastfeeding.

I was just wondering if any of you relatively intelligent yet curious-minded people had any theories on why meditation is possible, how it works or how we came to have such a capacity?

Perhaps it's a kind of base level state of awareness that all animals have, and we just don't exist in that mode very often because contemporary life demands a ton of conscious, frontal-lobe action. Something something apes coping with self-reflection...

Why does it have the benefits it does?

I think meditation allows some biological processes to function that normally only occurs during sleep.

Bullshit! Meditation is the act of trappping loose quantums, with your mind and using them to actualize potentialities that only existed in a parallel manifestation of universal existence

Nah, meditation is that thing where you're walking down the medition of a busy highway and trying not to get smushed. They made a game out of that and called it 'Frogger'.

I haven't the foggiest meself.

We have free will. It is that simple.
We are not controlling our minds so much as we are being our minds.

Every time you move your hand, you are really making your mind send signals to your mussels.
Meditating is really no different than anything else we do that exercises free will and choice.

The simply difference is that we are not used using our minds for meditating.

Think about it like when you learned to play Guitar Hero. Even though it is a very simple concept, the first time you play you're going to make a lot of mistakes and struggle. Its so easy, but we cannot do it at first because we have not learned it yet.

In that regard, meditations effects do improve with practice.

Well, either that, or you slowly enforce the delusion that is is having an effect:
that would then give in a placebo effect. Which is an effect you would be controlling with your will power.
( A technical difference, but still practically the same shit)

What are you trying to achieve wit meditation?
