Title: Introduction thread / "What does discordia mean to you?"
Post by: zackli on July 18, 2014, 03:21:33 am
Obviously there is the objective definition that none of us have access to, and then there is the subjective definition(s) that are interpreted and reinterpreted and reinterpreted and reinterpreted and reinterpreted ad infinitum until one of them got to your wonderful little sensing organ (not that one, the OTHER sensing organ. No, I didn't mean it was small; stop being so insecure.).

I'm asking for lots of reasons, but I will boil it down to five:
1. Seemed like a good first thread
2. I just read the book last night (yea, all by myself)
3. I HAD to know.
4. Another awesome reason
5. My mommy made me do it

I'm also curious how all of you stumbled upon it. I'll need specific times, dates and places unless you were stoned or drunk. In that case, I'll just settle for whatever days, times and places you feel like saying. Circumstances would be nice too, though not too much detail because no one wants to hear your life story unless you say they do.

Definitions do not work that way. Meaning is dependent on Context (including the context of the mind interpreting the symbols).

AKA "words do not carry inherent meaning". Welcome to Discordia, where your previous sense of reality means nothing.

>I'm also curious how all of you stumbled upon it.

When I was around 14 or so, a type of flash video called "animutations" were still popular. Because the typical format of animutations is that of seizure-inducing colours and images being flashed about on screen with random 0.01 second long interludes of text thrown in intermittenly, my friend and I would go through animutations frame by frame looking for "subliminal messages" and otherwise just trying to read the text that's too long to see in 0.01 seconds.
One particular video we dissected was Andrew Kepple's (TmsT) "French Erotic Film or Colin Mocrie vs. Jesus H Christ", set to the music of Ome Henk's "opblaaskrokodil".
On one frame we never noticed during full speed play, there was an image of dopefish from commander keen with the word "FNORD" printed under it. We knew TmsT was a fan of Id software games, but decided to play the 5 degrees of wikipedia with Fnord, which lead me to PD.com and reading the book.

>I'll need specific times, dates and places unless you were stoned or drunk.

Probably around 16:00 in 2003 or 2004 in april. I was not drunk or stoned.

>In that case, I'll just settle for whatever days, times and places you feel like saying.

See above

>Circumstances would be nice too, though not too much detail because no one wants to hear your life story unless you say they do.

Hope my post wasn't too life storyish then...

1994, Oakland, California. I met and made friends with Arkuat of the Pigdog Cabal via a dialup BBS, probably The Cheese Vault. He told me I was a Discordian, but didn't know it yet.

Since this thread clearly could go into at least five different directions, possibly ten based on the responses received, it is clear that some form of structure is in order. Obviously, all attempts at order inherently lead to chaos so the structure is as follows: when you read this, post the first thing that comes to your mind excluding anything in this post before reading any of the replies afterward. They'll either all be coherent or none will make any sense. I'm guessing the latter.

Searching  for "best troll threads" on Google in 2009 led me to a thread here by a certain Pterodactyl Handler X. I thought you guys were a funny bunch so I decided to check out the rest of the site and ended up reading the BIP, and then the Principia. I've lurked here on and off ever since then, reading threads in Or Kill Me and Literate Chaotic - the thread "Discordianism as the Perfect Nihilism" by Cain or Cramulus (I don't remember which) convinced me to make an account. So hello everyone, it's nice to finally make a post on here.

I'm not Pope Lecherous. I don't even know who Pope Lecherous is. Just ignore the fact that that is exactly what Pope Lecherous would say if he was trying to avoid being detected, and you'll see that I am 100% correct.

You have to believe ONE of them, don't you? This cuts right through all the BS and reveals the unsubstantiated nature of identity and beliefs in an online setting. The exact same thing occurs in real life (minus the identity part, usually).

Xept when dealing with the existence of Soviet Nuclear Subs., where the absence of positive identification is all the more reason to argue that they must exist.  Therefore, the problem of identity is hardly one of substantiation.  Generally, I'd chalk it down to recognition.  Not that anyone cares :lulz:

Discordia means the primordial chaos.
In my opinion it is a kind of anthropological relativism in the symbolic context.
Actually I always have been a discordian but I never knew it :lulz: I mean, I always agreed with everything written in the Principa Discordia before actually reading it :fap:

We glad you understand!  PD work with noscript torbrowser on whonix so we were hope approval.

You might lose some images with noscript but otherwise the forum tends to run no problem on it. There are a couple of pages off of the front page that might not display right but otherwise should be fine.

As roger said some troublesome people have been banned off of tor exit nodes (EDIT: actually these have probably been removed so it wont be an issue) so if you ever cant reach the site press the new IP button.

I no cause any trouble.

I like all people, even stupid opinion people :D

If bad English annoy or hard to understand I can try make it better.

If you're going to hang out on primarily English speaking boards, yeah, you're going to want to work on that. You are liable to get your face eaten over a misunderstanding otherwise.

Also, I don't trust anyone who doesn't cause any trouble.

Goal is honest communication no spy on me.

Hello

I found out about Discordianityism today after finding about a ginormoplanet named Eris and its moon, Dysnomer. Trying to find more internetinfo about these places led me to some interesting websites. I read this Principa Dontcordium book, and now i do believe I  have solved the mystery.

Why type here? I don't know, so much of Discordianity would have been absolute nonsense 1 year ago. Today, so much was nonsense...

Correction it was a dwarf planet and the moon is Dysnomia. I just double checked to see if the whole thing was a prank. Fnord?

My mother was an amazon queen who was burned at the stake by jon swift after she was offended by his offensive essays on height, She was also of irish ancestry and offend by his ideas about what the irish should do with their babies. At first realizing you're wrong is uncomfortable... even painful. But if you practice it enough, eventually it starts to feel not only less uncomfortable, but actually empowering. With enough time and diligent practice, you will find that there can be found a certain pleasure in discovering you're wrong, and you may even start seeking out such discoveries avidly, until eventually you become addicted to the feeling and start being wrong all the time, on purpose.

Fuck you, I'll never be wrong!

I was once a genius, like you.

But then I took a Nigel to the knee.

 :lulz:

I got bad, man. Let me tell you. REAL bad. I was so addicted to being wrong the doktors thoughts I would never recover, stood no chance of ever leading a normal life again. I hit rock bottom the day I woke up in a stranger's house with a sore throat, and I knew... even though I couldn't remember... that I'd paid a man to let me come over and take the wrong side of an argument with him all night long. Stumbling out into the sunlight, throat raw from shouting him down because my point was too weak to stand on the merits of its own logic, I knew that I had to quit. I had to give up that sweet, sweet full-body rush of wrongness. So I gave it up. Cold turkey.

At first it was hard... I couldn't walk past a TV showing Fox News or the alternative medicine section in a bookstore without getting hit hard by the cravings. But it got better, bit by bit, and eventually my life started to return to normal. Almost normal. The hardest part about recovery is that now the Doktors say that I have to stay clean, that just one hit could drag me down into a full relapse. There are people who would really love to see that, you know; they try to tempt me. "C'mon, Nigel, you know you want it", they say, trying to make me wrong. But I know how it goes; I know I can't touch the stuff anymore. Wrong: not even once.

You bastards have no idea how lucky you are.

I'm getting alot of practice lately!

To me, Discordia seems to mean "question everything, including the answers your previous questions led you to." But I just read the Principia Discordia and the Black Iron Prison myself, and my head's still in that "new information filling it with fuck" state, so I'll have to rethink this answer at some point.

Around 4 years ago some dude of mine shoved the book "oven ready chaos" by Phil Hine into my face, that's when I began to stumble into the direction.

What is discordia for me? The melody played by Mistress Eris to which we waltz through life. Okay, some people seem to stumble instead of waltzing but who cares?

Alright, if this is a newb/introduction thread, my turn.

My story has to do with a neo-helenistic new age pagan girlfriend I had about a year ago who did all sorts of weird things, so I was bored one afternoon and looked up helenistic paganism. On Wikipedia. You know how that goes.

Two hours of clicking later, I had found something even weirder than she was. You see, I was reading a book at the time by James Gleik about Chaos as science and found that particular section profoundly interesting, which naturally led me from one thing to the next... hey, it's not as bad as the time I had a conversation where the transition went "food porno -> porno-funk as a music genre -> Jewish reggae -> Adolf Hitler's humanitarian side -> napkin eating contest" and made perfect sense. Don't judge me.

As for what discordianism is, well, I still don't know if it's real or not. But it hung around and she's gone now, so that's gotta count for something. Maybe. Or maybe it's more like Hobbes, part of and yet external from Calvin. I don't know. I just don't know.

To me....it's fundamentally about entropy

Everything - from atomic matter to human society - seeks to return to a 'chaotic' state

Within every organism there are factors that resist this movement (the aneristic principle if you will), and we can all appreciate their efforts - take organised religion or corporations in the human realm

Discordia is about pointing a finger at said obstacles

And laughing while you do it

I think the key question is: was the universe born from order - and is this inevitable declination toward disorder part of a pre-conceived 'blueprint'

In Qabalah/Buddhism etc. the thinking is toward man (and those lovely ladies) gradually moving toward the Godhead through continual reincarnation - is this a movement toward disorder - I personally think so

Thoughts?

Yeah.

I think you're missing a full half of the equation. Entropy is the increasing disorder of the universe, but chaos is the balance between order and disorder, ie. between emergence and entropy. The Principia Discordia talks about this pretty explicitly, and it is represented by the conflicting arrows in the Five Fingered Hand of Eris.

I am frequently disheartened by all the Discordians I mean who seem to miss this aspect of the PD completely, and interpret chaos as solely meaning disorder, when the book tries so hard to dispel that interpretation. Order arises from disorder, and disorder from order; this is chaos.

Are you familiar with the concepts of emergence and entropy?

Maybe this will be useful: http://phys.org/news/2013-04-emergence-complex-behaviors-causal-entropic.html

I also recommend reading the Principia Discordia.

What does Discordia mean to me?  It means Richter is the only one who knows what MBTA connections we have to use.  It means Twid is hounding cops on Boston Common again.  It means LMNO finally got those special order underpants that can withstand that hideous strain induced by THE GAY BAR.

It means Queen Gogira is fleecing the sheep, Cainad is telling me about FUCKING FRUIT LOOK AT THAT SHIT YOU PLEB, and ECH is finally getting enough fiber in his diet.

It means Nigel is loose with a baseball bat on the Burnside bridge again, keeping reality safe for the rest of us.  With perhaps a little too much vigor, but that is only to be expected of that saintly woman.  She is nothing if not dedicated, and Portland more or less asked for this shit anyway, when it took advantage of her trip to Peru, and sabotaged her washing machine.  We shall eventually have to sacrifice The Wizard Joseph to her.   No offense, TWJ, it's just one of those...things.

It means that Eater of Clowns is on the loose again, with his mouth full of power-assisted teeth.  It means he and Luna are going to Fall River again, to teach those fuckers something they'll never forget

Discordia means all of this and more.  It means my dog is finally getting enough chicken skin.  It means my wife not only tolerates my excesses and poor behavior, but is amused by it.

In short, Discordia means Saturday Night™.  And that is something you just can't explain to the zealots and the pimps and the fixers.

And they won't listen if you try.

The Empress Nigel and The Good Reverend Roger have made very salient points. One should meditate on them deeply (that means breathing deeply and with regular timing once the sense of horrormirth at your own paradoxically both-insignificant-and-overwhelmingly-powerful place in the universe sets in... ... ... there we go, keep breathing... no, no that anxiety won't ever go away completely... keep breathing...).
