Title: WHERE'S YOUR GODWIN, NOW?
Post by: Salty on November 17, 2016, 06:43:01 pm
That was after you called me a child, silly! Keep UP.

I didn't call you a child; I said that opinions were like children: those who have them are usually the ones least qualified. It's an addage that I've been saying for years. I wasn't making a comment on your particular opinions, but simply responding to the twist on the "opinions are like assholes" saying.

"I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!"

Quote
As for Godwin. This has been bugging me all election.

Godwin's law applies when in the midst of an argument you call your opponent a NAZI or Hitler as a means of defending your point. My point is that the right just elected a president with actual NAZI ideology, as opposed to conservative ideology.

Since Godwin's Law isn't formal, it has been long-since (unspokenly) amended to include people who accuse others of being literal Nazis as a form of hyperbole.

If you honestly, truly believe that someone is an actual Nazi, you've got a pretty big burden of proof resting on your shoulders if you're going to invoke that opinion in an argument. Most of the time, you'll just not be taken seriously and people will assume that you're being hyperbolic and vitriolic.

This is a perfect distillation of the argument I have only been able to touch upon on FB.

I can't find the source, but some years ago I read about Ken Kesey speaking at some rally. I think he was just walking by one and somebody noticed him and asked him to speak. He gets to the podium and says something to effect of: "You know what you people are doing with the marching and the banner waving and chants, it's basically the same method used by the NAZIs to take power". I think he was just talking from an aesthetic perspective, perhaps implying that taking steps to create positive societal change isn't waving banners and chanting. I don't know if he was right or wrong, but I always thought it was funny

That's no doubt a rougher version than what actually happened, but the point is clear, and hilarious. While Trump may or may not hit every check-box for Totally Legit NAZI, the people that voted for him could easily be seen as voting Hitler in. The zealousness. The same exact thing could be said for all the Bernie Bros, not all his supporters, just those who would not listen to reason, those who simply refused to see anything beyond black and white terms. Especially, when it comes to race.

I have meandered a little bit here....
Oh yeah, does Godwin apply when you call a NAZI a NAZI?

The best way to prevent future holocausts, I believe, is not to forbear from Holocaust comparisons; instead, it’s to make sure that those comparisons are meaningful and substantive.

This is critical. My words are typically carefully measured.

I think the flip side of this coin is the over-load of inaccurate NAZI comparisons make it more difficult to make accurate ones without it being seen as hyperbole. People just switch off as soon as they see the word NAZI. Just roll the eyes and move along, is the usual reaction I have got anyway.

Well, the thing is that people who genuinely attempt to draw parallels between modern politics and Nazi Germany almost never present a convincing argument. They do little more than conflate human nature in one situation with human nature in the other.

"Obama is a good speaker. People blindly follow him. Hitler was a good speaker, and people blindly followed him. Therefore, Obama is like Hitler."

or

"People voted for Hitler because they were fearful, resentful, and bigoted. People voted for Trump because they are fearful, resentful, and bigoted. Therefore, Trump's election is like Hitler's election."

This is pseudo-intellectualism that doesn't justify the comparison. In these kinds of arguments, the differences are more important than the subtle similarities.

I feel like you have a habit of creating false dichotomies, seeing things as blackvswhite.

You are presenting two sides that are not the full extent of either and calling it pseudo-intellectual. You are only presenting a small aspect of the similarities between Hitler's rise to power and Donald Trumps. You are also ignoring whole aspects. It's not JUST the attitude of people that have voted for him, it's his OWN actions and behaviors. I mean, did or did he not, as a major platform for his campaign, promise to ban Muslims from entering this country? Are there not many other things he himself has done and said that are xenophobic, nationalistic, etc? I also offered evidence in the other thread. There's PLENTY more out there, if you'd like me to post it all here.

The litmus test of Godwin's Law is providing a meaningful comparison. That requires an awfully convincing argument that stands to scrutiny. Between this thread and what's been argued in "Protestors Are Assholes", I have yet to see a single one.

Hell, I haven't even seen an attempt at one. All you have to do is show up, say someone you don't like is literally a Nazi, and then watch the ensuing discussion destroy itself. You may as well just drop the fag bomb (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEbsgEsjy9s).

This forum aside, have you really been unable to find essays or news articles that meaningfully compare Trump's rhetoric and policy proposals to Hitler?

You mean when I'm not experiencing massive "butthurt"?

I've found plenty of people trying to draw comparisons between Trump and Hitler. There's also about eight-years-worth of people who tried to convince the world that Obama was like Hitler.

None of it is or ever has been the least bit convincing. The only people who subscribe to this kind of stuff are wingbats, because wingbats don't tend to be critical thinkers.

And honestly: what's the fucking point? We don't have laws that say you can't be President if you remind people of Hitler. Congratulations, you think the President is a Nazi. That attitude doesn't do you the least bit of good - unless, of course, your goal is to be laughed out of every conversation you have that isn't in an echo chamber.

Does his open appointment of Bannon to an "advisory" position and nepotism not cobcern you in a "Maybe is like unto Hitler" kind of way?

Complicity in getting votes from white nationalists? Really isn't enough to justify comparing them to Hitler.

No, because comparing someone to Hitler is unoriginal, unhelpful, unconstructive. It doesn't get anything done. It just makes you feel good about being afraid.

You sound like assholes. You want to convince someone that a guy is comparable to Hitler? Maybe try writing an essay or something.

Let me put it this way: Hitler is like the clitoris. You don't just go stampeding straight towards it and blow your load; you work your way down, slowly, with forethought and tenderness. Going zero-to-Hitler turns everyone else off unless you have literally the best argument anyone has ever come up with, because people are constantly comparing anyone they don't like to goddamned Hitler.

Check out this trollbait I laid earlier.

Quote
"Intentionalist historians of Nazi Germany traditionally emphasize the unique role of Hitler in legitimizing and directing Nazi rule from the very beginning of the movement (Jaeckel 1972; Bracher 1979).7 On this view, German fascism is seen as a ‘monocratic’ system of rule (Alleinherrschaft) which is not only dependent on the ideological vision of the leader but on his personal decision making. As structuralist historians argue, however, this interpretation downplays the multi-dimensional nature of decision making in the Third Reich and the deliberate cultivation of the ‘Führer myth’ as a legitimation device, which allowed Nazi rulers to attribute policy successes to the leader while blaming lesser functionaries for the chaotic reality of polycratic rule (Broszat 1981; Mason 1971; Mommsen 1991b). As Kershaw points out, this allowed the Nazi elite to project an image of the Führer as a leader without sin, a person who could transcend sectional interests and rise above everyday political squabbles."

Or this, thanks to Cain BTW:
Quote
"Fascism was intended to increase the effectiveness of the state in the management of economic and social processes, but resulted instead in the erosion of an older distinction between state and civil society, a fragmentation of government into multiple competing agencies, and a decline of the old state bureaucracy as a site of unified, autonomous decision making. Although founded in principle on the concentrated authority of the state, fascism in Germany devolved decision-making authority to co-opted elites, creating a dynamic towards polycracy. By undermining routinized administration, fascism led to infighting, short-termism, organizational chaos, and policy radicalization, encouraging leaders to embark on adventurist policies and periodic campaigns to mobilize their support base. As Broszat argues, National Socialism created a tendency towards expedience which ‘disrupted any rational overall organization of government and reinforced the particularist egocentricity of the respective departmental values and ideologies’ (1981: 358). In this environment, law effectively lost its universal regulatory function, degenerating into a system of contradictory decrees articulating the interests of power-elites who attempted to manipulate the apparatus to defeat rivals or to win favour with the leader. To this extent, at least, the rivalry between fascist oligarchs confirms one of the primary theoretical arguments of competitive elitism, namely that political outcomes are – to a large extent – determined by the balance of power between elites for influence in the state."

No these tasty little examples of thought must have Godwin tingling in all his extremities.

You're not worth the effort of genuine argument. You can't keep up. It's not your fault, you were probably born this way.

Congratulations, you can quote passages. Some of us use our own words. The best of us use both.

This isn't anything resembling an argument. There isn't anything to rebutt, agree with, or otherwise discuss. You haven't made an actual point.

Is literally appointing an actual white nationalist propaganda disseminator to his cabinet not enough to maybe make that association?

Honestly, that's a good question - better than most you guys have been asking - but my answer is, again, "No." A connect-the-dots association with white nationalism - no matter how much I or anyone else may vehemently disagree with it as an ideology - isn't enough on its own to be meaningfully compared to Nazi Germany. Racism and xenophobia alone do not make two situations truly comparable.

If Donald Trump has actual connections to the very real National Socialist Movement or the (now defunct) National Socialist Party of America, then yes - you are free to start calling him a Nazi, Neo-Nazi, sympathizer, whatever. Even the term itself at that point would be technically correct.

But drawing parallels between a guy who hires a guy who is accused of enabling a platform for a lot of assholes (including white nationalists) and Hitler seriously hurts your position if you intend to be taken seriously in a way that makes any real difference.

I mean, I suppose it all depends on who you're trying to convince, but it's certainly no pathway to diplomacy.

There are two kinds of people in the world who disagree with you: those who will never agree, and those who might change their minds. If your plan is to get people to change their minds, racing straight for the Clitler is the most reckless and argumentatively irresponsible path you can take.

Is literally appointing an actual white nationalist propaganda disseminator to his cabinet not enough to maybe make that association?

Not really. There were crazy white supremacists long before Hitler.

Evil is not monolithic. Nor is even the more specific evil of racism monolithic. Being a charismatic racist white guy in a position of power doesn't necessarily make him literally Hitler any more than it makes him literally Jefferson Davis, or even for that matter literally Thomas Jefferson.

EDIT:
Given his ties to Russia I'd be inclined to compare him to the guys participating in or even inciting and leading the charges during the pogroms, although he isn't necessarily literally them either

Holocaust survivors are absolutely entitled to draw meaningful comparisons to Hitler, and are worth listening to. That being said, a Holocaust survivor making extremely reserved comments about being weary of demagogues doesn't give random crazies on the Internet license to claim that someone is literally a Nazi.

This thread has devolved into the intellectual equivalent of people sticking their fingers in their ears and shouting. The entire discussion is a facade for a debate on whether or not Trump is a Nazi - or whether or not it's reasonable to call him a Nazi and has absolutely balls to do with Godwin's Law at this point - especially since people can read the thing for themselves and then continue to insist that it's a thing that it isn't.

Half of the people arguing for one side are doing nothing but quoting passages from tangentially-related essays and then claiming anyone who doesn't connect the invisible dots on their own is an idiot, mostly as a way to compensate for the fact that they can't construct an argument using that information. When they're not not-busy doing that, they're scrambling for new reasons to justify the comparison, as if at some point some individual one is going to grant permission.

The other half is lashing out with personal attacks, words like "good riddance", and all the other kinds of intellectually dishonest ways of acting like you're walking away from a discussion you can't win while simultaneously feeling like you did win.

There's a third half (now we're up to three halves and I don't know how it came to this) that just keeps posting this fucking party-hat emoji, which I'm starting to think is the most convincing of all the arguments.

I may be a noob to the forum, but I've been a Discordian for over a decade. I'm not here to school anyone, but I think some of you have either lost sight of or never really understood that Discordianism promotes creative disorder over destructive disorder, all the while maintaining that both order and disorder are necessary components of an inherently chaotic universe.

The most active of you (at least in this sub-forum) seem to just be destructively disordered. Or maybe Trump's election just threw you all for such a loop that you haven't had time to recover. I don't know. I'm not here to defend him other than to say that I'm surprised that few of you seem unable to disassociate yourselves from your ideological beliefs.

Arguing over politics is a great way to lose friends and make enemies. Because Discordia is a place full of assholes - and people always ready to admit that they are assholes - I thought that we could all sit down and have a nice rant about people who can't admit that other people are assholes.

And the problem is that we defend the assholes when they're playing for our team. We can't be honest. For me, being discordant is about being absolutely honest in an effort to combat the lies.

Information vs. disinformation.

The reason is that the topic was started by and has become flooded with people who can only think in ideological terms of one extreme. Most of the posters in this sub-forum employ the debate tactics of middle-schoolers. They gang up, ask you if you're going to cry now, and then tell you that you're being silly when you swear at them.

 :lulz:

Yes, yes. Would you say those of us who fit into this category aren't REALLY REAL Discordians? FOR REALZ?

The most active of you (at least in this sub-forum) seem to just be destructively disordered. Or maybe Trump's election just threw you all for such a loop that you haven't had time to recover. I don't know. I'm not here to defend him other than to say that I'm surprised that few of you seem unable to disassociate yourselves from your ideological beliefs.

Which you would know aaaaalllll about what with your day or so of argument. You've really got us all nailed down. :golfclap:

Also, because of a billion threads just like this. And worse. Way worse. At least this isn't a drug thread.

Guys, we're doing discorida wrong again.

Nah, just admit that you thought you would get strong support for your childish statement that the protesters are assholes. But it's a stupid statement, so you got people telling you to eat a bag of dicks. When people are protesting over things that have serious impacts on people's freedoms and well being, like civil rights, simply protesting does not make them assholes. Were there also assholes protesting? Well, yeah; here in Portland the local anarchist group always joins every protest just so they can commit property damage. Those people are assholes. But you are calling people who are protesting "assholes" because they are protesting threats to their access to birth control, abortion, and medical services; protesting because certain people are under threat of being rounded up and detained or deported; protesting because certain people are under threat of being put on a national registry because of their religion or national origin; and protesting because certain races are imprisoned or wrongfully killed by police at rates disproportionate to their presence in the population, among other reasons. Those are reasons that have a strong enough validity that it is going to be hard for most intelligent people to dismiss the protesters as "assholes", which is a word with a high subjective definition anyway.

Are you referring to https://www.scribd.com/document/35737152/Creative-Destruction ?

I have not; I can appreciate that it schisms into multiple, seemingly contradictory dimensions rather than the original two-dimensional compass. Reads a bit like a D&D character-creation guide, though. I'm not sure it really clears anything up. I hope that the ratio that I'm seeing of blatant assholes to self-aware assholes is limited to this particular subforum, but maybe that's the wrong way to look at it.

Some of us are here for self-affirmation, obviously, which I think is a fallacy (and one that I'm probably not immune to). Some of us come to them to challenge ourselves and others. Some come to make friends, some come to make enemies. Some of us come because we are aliens in human skin who think making prank chatroulette visits is a productive way to spend our time. If you said he was "nazi-like" or just "nazi" as hyperbole or metaphor that would be an accurate assessment, but literally a literal nazi is not. There's more to being a nazi than just being a white supremicist and a douchebag; they represent a very specific subset of white supremicist douchebags.

The real problem is that a comparison to Nazism is pretty much the worst it can get, just shy of calling someone Satan. That's why it's the debate-killer; it's can't be reasoned with. Once someone starts saying "X is just like the Nazis," then the conversation is over. The conversation is even more over when the person making the comparison tries to derail the entire debate into some kind of conspiratorial drivel intended to substitute a rational and convincing argument. When you fail to be convinced, they'll scream that you're an idiot for not understanding what they can see so clearly.

It's intellectual dishonesty, and its only purpose is to shut the whole thing down. Google is awash with what seem like legitimate attempts to equate any popular politician with Hitler. Even fucking Bernie Sanders (https://www.google.com/search?q=bernie+sanders+hitler&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8) gets the Godwin treatment.

This is especially disheartening when the conversation is about trying to get Americans to stop demonizing other Americans. It's responsible for the further polarization of politics, and part of the reason we're in a perpetual state of hyperbolic civil war.

Is that what the people calling themselves "Discordians" want?

Yes, it can, and I just quoted it for you. I came here because I appreciate the symbol of the Chao. Is that not an adequate answer? Why do any of us come to discussion forums? Some of us are here for self-affirmation, obviously, which I think is a fallacy (and one that I'm probably not immune to). Some of us come to them to challenge ourselves and others. Some come to make friends, some come to make enemies. Some of us come because we are aliens in human skin who think making prank chatroulette visits is a productive way to spend our time. The question of why I am here is of no more importance than the question of why anybody else is.

Shit fuck damn, just look at how tedious that is. It's the internet forum post version of ironic sideburns.

Hey, I'm not pro-Trump, I voted for Hillary, she's better than Trump no contest. Hell, even if it somehow turned out that she really did kill Vince Foster she'd still be better than Trump. I voted for her firm in the onowledge that even if against all odds all of these dubious conspiracy theories about her somehow turned out to be true even all of them together wouldn't make her a poorer choice than Donald Trump because Donald Trump is that poor of a choice. That doesn't make Trump a literal nazi or Hillary a good person.

Nope, no parallels here. Thank, again, Cain.

Quote
"In the first case, the primary goal of eugenicists in the United States was to regulate the flow of immigrants through a new policy of selection. Integral to this was a fear not just of race-mixing but of political contamination – principally from east European immigrants harbouring revolutionary ideas. One of the principal targets of the proposed legislation was the ‘swarm’ of Polish Jews, whose cultural identity was considered alien to American traditions (Jackson and Weidman 2004: 115). This resulted in the Immigration Restriction Act of 1924, which ruled that all future immigration quotas be adjusted to match the existing racial profile of the country, privileging northern over eastern and southern Europeans." - Fascism and Political Theory, Daniel Woodley (2010)

First of all, you don't know shit about my clitoris and should not fucking talk for everyone even if you aren't a Ron Paul sockpuppet and have a vagina.

Nigel’s clitoris was bitten by a cobra and after five days of excruciating pain... the cobra died.

He who laughs last, laughs best. He who laughs at Nigel’s clitoris, it's definitely his last laugh.

The easiest way to determine Nigel’s clitoris's age is to cut it in half and count the rings

Nigel’s clitoris doesn't dial the wrong number. You answered the wrong phone.

Nigel’s clitoris knows Victoria's secret.

If Nigel’s clitoris was a Spartan in the movie 300, the movie would be called 1.

When Nigel’s clitoris swims in the ocean, the sharks are in a steel cage.

Nigel’s clitoris will never have a heart attack. Nigel’s heart isn't nearly foolish enough to attack it.

Nigel’s clitoris once kicked a horse in the chin. Its descendants today are known as giraffes.

Nigel’s clitoris doesn't breathe air. It holds air hostage.

Nigel’s clitoris can delete the Recycling Bin.

Nigel’s clitoris has already been to Mars. That's why there are no signs of life.

Nigel’s clitoris can kill two stones with one bird.

Nigel’s clitoris's calendar goes straight from March 31st to April 2. No one fools Nigel’s clitoris.

Nigel’s clitoris wears sunglasses so that it’s eyes won't hurt the sun.

If you see Nigel’s clitoris crying it will grant you a wish, if your wish is dying.

When Nigel’s clitoris works out it doesn't get stronger, the machine does.

Nigel’s clitoris does not sleep; it waits.

More to the point has Trump said anything expansionist, especially any kind of stupid bullshit "well historically [insert foreign country or territory] already belongs to us" (although not limited to this). Most of what I've heard of him seems to be more isolationist.

Would it be of any concern to you that his picks for Foreign Policy advisors are hawkish expansionists?

Are they really?

This is terrifying.

I'm almost certain at this point that he's in fact fully behind the entire cult, quite possibly for a long time indeed. That or this is something like post-modern prophecy.

Actually, what I was doing was using logic to dismantle the relevance (https://www.logicallyfallacious.com/tools/lp/Bo/LogicalFallacies/10/Ad-Hominem-Guilt-by-Association) of Nazis (or the KKK, or anyone you don't like) voting for Trump.

If you tried appealing to reason instead of emotion, you'd understand that I'm not defending Nazis.

But now that you mention it, they probably are great to have around if you're ever trapped inside a freezing-cold library.

Speculating? Oh no, it's just that you're such a cookie-cutter make that it seemed obvious that you fit that general category of schlub.

Because you really can't get past the fact that I, specifically, among myriad other people, continue to comment on active threads on a webforum. Because you really can't get past the fact that I, specifically, among myriad other people, continue to comment on active threads on a webforum.

You keep bouncing back and forth between commenting with something worthwhile to contribute and attempting to form a cabal against me. While I've had you (and about five others) blocked, curiosity got the better of me and I decided to take a look at a few threads. The number of times you've gone out of your way to needlessly speculate about me or talk trash about me is well above anyone else's score at this point.

I'd say anyone expressing that level of commitment has a boner for me, male or female.

Trust me, it's unwanted attention, but it's still attention. If you're going to keep giving it, I'm going to keep blasting you right back in the ass.

I gave you and the others the opportunity to end it by offering a sincere apology. The only person who had any sense to respond to that with an adult attitude was Faust. It's no coincidence that he's also one of the few around here of whom I am as of yet unable to speak ill.

Quote
You've been inordinately fixated on me and my femaleness ever since I pointed out that your clitoris analogy was fucking stupid.

You drew attention to your sex as a knee-jerk response to a relatively benign simile. I told you that I really did not care, as it had nothing to do with the topic. Of course, now that you've revealed it as a particularly vulnerable point of attack, it's become part of my arsenal. The more you talk about me behind my back, the more I assume you must want something from me.

If you're enjoying the flame war, then by all means, let's continue this nonsense. I found it frustrating at first, but now it's starting to grow on me. Still, I'd rather forget the whole thing and get back to actual, productive discussion.

Urban Dictionary: Ass Biscuit (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=assbiscuit)

Pot, meet the kettle. What do you have to say to the kettle, pot?

Quote from: Freeky

Don't say anything, because it might upset someone, it might offend someone, it might make people you respect view you with scorn, it might hurt someone else.

Don't explain, because it doesn't matter anyway, it won't be listened to, it's just an excuse, it'll be seen to be a lie, it'll be taken out of context, it'll open unhealed wounds, it'll make things harder, it wasn't asked for.

Don't make eye contact, because they'll think you like them, think you hate them, think you're challenging them, think you want to fight, think you want to talk, think you have the energy to deal.

Don't react, because it'll start a fight, give them power, appear you were eavesdropping, be offensive, start a conversation, be shameful, make you look strange.

Don't speak, because nobody cares, nobody asked, it's you ignoring them, you aren't an expert, you don't have the energy, don't have the will, don't feel welcome anyway.

Sounds like good advice: for newcomers to the forum.

My advice? Take more pills.

Oh?  Are protestors not people?  There's people here who are active in that respect, so you attacked them by calling them assholes.  But I'm sure that you'll have any number of excuses for that.

If you can't tell the difference between ranting about a particular group of people and attacking a person, then you really should take a seat and have a good listen.

Not a single person on this board contributed to that thread by speaking up and saying, "I protested. And I did it because of X reason, and I do/don't agree with the sentiments expressed by the protestors getting in the news." No-one. What I got, primarily, was a bunch of angry, insulated blow-hards throwing personal insults. Because I expressed an opinion that you found offensive? Being offended is no excuse for piss-poor behavior. You'd think I was trying to make my point to animals in a zoo. And the only people who were trying to debate with me either repeatedly accused me of presenting a false equivalence (despite explaining my actual position) or consistently attempted to derail the thread into a conversation about whether or not everyone who voted Republican is a Nazi.

I've read some of the other threads here. Ranting about groups of people you don't understand is what you folks spend most of your political discussions doing. It's ridiculously hypocritical of you to accuse me of attacking any of you by doing the same.

I even tried explaining that being an asshole (in the sense in which I meant it) wasn't even necessarily a bad thing, because sometimes it takes assholes to get things done. I also extended the term "asshole" to literally everyone, myself included.

If you decide to take personal offense at a general expression, you can do one of two things: prove that you're an asshole by responding like one, or engage in honest debate like a decent human being. You want to spend the rest of your days on this board trolling me because of a sentiment, then you can go right back into the ignore list, because fuck you. That's the most childish fucking thing anyone here can do.

Quote
You seem to be fixated on this idea that I'm having a go at you because I'm insecure around the people here.

Saying something once doesn't make a person fixated. Doggedly following them around threads just to snipe at them with petty insults and invitations to flame wars (which you obviously aren't prepared to handle), however, does. You're fixated on me in the same way that Nigel has been fixated on me.

In fact, if the two of you were any less interested in me, I'd have to get a restraining order.

Quote
You're the one that said you wanted to make friends, in that wall of text you erased in a tantrum.

I erased the apology because the majority of you agreed that I should go fuck myself. That's not a tantrum. A tantrum is what you and several others have been throwing ever since I showed up to this place.

Quote
Projecting, much?

Are you finished? Or are you begging to be put back on the list so you and your friend can write me more secret love-letters?

HUH, FUNNY STORY.

Looks like we're on our way to being an alternate history!

From John Oliver's first show back:

http://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/2/13/14597200/john-oliver-trump-lies-last-week-tonight (http://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/2/13/14597200/john-oliver-trump-lies-last-week-tonight)

Quote
“Normally, we like to focus this part of the show on complex, depressing policy issues — something fun like CO2 emissions from hearses or space poverty or the proliferation of special-purpose taxing districts, a topic so boring you didn’t even realize we literally already did that exact story last year,” Oliver said on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight. “And we want to keep doing those kind of things. But unfortunately we can’t until we address something even bigger: the concept of reality itself.”

As Oliver explained, one of the fundamental concepts of analyzing policy is agreeing on a very basic set of facts to start from. People can disagree on how to react to some of the facts, although the basic facts should remain largely uncontested. But Trump and his team don’t meet that threshold — not even agreeing on the basic facts, whether the topic is terrorism or former President Barack Obama’s birth certificate.

This can have dangerous consequences, Oliver said: “Real people get hurt when you make policy based on false information. Billions will get spent on a wall that won’t work to prevent a crime wave that isn’t happening, while refugees sit in dangerous situations to prevent Bowling Green–style massacres that never took place.”

He's blonde, blue-eyed aryan poster boy, anyone who can't see this is either retarded or on his side.

You'd probably have to go back and re-read the entirety of several threads to understand.

This whole thing came about because Trump got elected and a bunch of people totally lost their minds and began to blame the people who voted for him for all of the evils they had (in many cases justifiably so) projected onto his campaign. I argued that if Trump is your enemy and you turn your hatred towards voters, you're a fucking tool and a fool.

This is especially true in my own state, where post election-night protestors vandalized city streets in a state that voted for Hillary Clinton. Talk about shitting where you eat.

I was counterargued that all my points were null and void because Nazis. Because Nazis voted for Trump, all the rage against all Trump voters was justified. The logic here is that if Nazis voted for Trump, anyone who voted for Trump is a Nazi. And if you aren't suggesting that logic intellectually, you're sure as hell suggesting it emotionally.

You'll even go so far as to claim that the very fact that I'm opposing that nonsense is proof that I'm a Trump supporter. I can't think of a more pathetic defense.

And now, months later, this thread is necro'd just so Salty can claim his shitty, stupid argument was right the whole time just because Godwin supports calling people who identify as Nazis "Nazis".

You guys have a little too much heart, and not quite enough brain.

My point is that you guys need a villain so much that you're willing to imagine yourselves as Indiana Jones, leaping onto tanks and saving the day with nothing but your knuckles.

The people who marched in Charlottesville are merely an echo of what the actual Nazis were. At best, they're neckbeard Nazi cosplayers who think that waving a Swaztika around makes them a force to be reckoned with.

Attacking them is like punching a misbehaving retarded child. Fearing them is absurd.

I don't fear them, I fear what they could become, and there is genuinely as much chance of that here as there was in Germany in the 30s. Which, in case you are somehow not aware, was not a good time. And quite honestly, this is what a decent person does in the face of a possible reprising of genocidal fascism. Remember "never forget"? Remembering is pretty much the important part of never forgetting.

Do I know if this is going to turn into that? Of course not. Am I willing to take that chance? Shit no.

You stand a REALLY big chance of being on the wrong side of history here. At worst, I look foolish in retrospect. I can live with that, I frequently look foolish. It's pretty much my default state. But for you dude, at worst you are complicit with potential genocide. I know which side of that I would rather be on.

I hope that smug edgy grin is worth it.

Or Heather Heyer.

If you step on a snake and the snake bites you, you're as much at fault as the snake. People don't show up to these kinds of protests expecting nobody to get hurt.

If you show up to a Nazi rally with the intention to antagonize, attack, or otherwise elicit violence from them, then congratulations: you're part of a bigger problem. And if you didn't come with that intention, you should probably anticipate that someone else did. If it gets you killed, then it sucks for you that people on your side of the clash helped trigger the events that led to your death.

The bottom line is that trying to pin the responsibility on one side is disingenuous, and frankly, intellectually dishonest.

So far, the only counterargument I've seen is that none of this matters, because Nazis.

How do you quantify a genuine chance in this case?

If political action is to be predicated on the fear of what something might become, then we might as well just stop our entire country in its tracks. Stop the human race altogether. After all, think about what we might become.

Quote
Do I know if this is going to turn into that? Of course not. Am I willing to take that chance? Shit no.

Well, then, what do you prefer? Diplomacy? Or war?

Let's assume war. Your only option is to exterminate them. Stamp them out. And you aren't going to do that with socks full of ball bearings. You aren't going to do it sitting around here circle-jerking each other about how good it would feel to punch a Nazi in the face.

And while you're at it, just wipe them all out. Kill the entire alt-right. Kill anyone who doesn't vote Democrat. Kill anyone who votes at all.

If you choose to love only those who don't hate and hate those who do, you'll wind up hating yourself as well. Might as well add that one to the kill list, too.

Yeah yeah yeah, I understand the tar baby principle as well as anyone else.

But see, the whole point of history is to attempt to avoid the same mistakes previously made. People didn't take the fascists seriously the first time, so people are less likely to be as complacent moving forward. Well, except edgy you, of course.

Your attempts to build straw men for me to shoot at are admirable, though ultimately a waste of your time. My arguments are aimed at groups attempting to impose genocide. My  argument is only for that group, and other groups require other arguments. But of course you know that, and are intentionally using eristic methods to muddy the waters. Nice try though.

Anyways, what I'm trying to say is, there's money in talent, and I'm not seeing much of it. We got 2 pages to turn this around, or I'm gonna have to cut you.

Alright, ABBY SINGER FROM THE TOP...

ACTION!

I found my Hero of the Day™.

No way Trump is a NAZI, ludicrous to suggest it. He just plays one on TV.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/aug/15/donald-trump-press-conference-far-right-defends-charlottesville?CMP=fb_gu

Only an extremist would see measure as the opposite extreme.

But, hey, the anarchists kind of have a win-win with this one. Start a fight with a Nazi, and everyone will blame the Nazi. Because Nazis.

It's like a magic word that turns everyone into hypocrites.

Also, you guys have a really strange fixation on Nazis here. I'm starting to think you all really just want to get a hotel room with them.

What;s the cuttoff for jerkoff getting an unlimited thread?

6 PM, real time.

My arguments are aimed at groups attempting to impose genocide.

Can you provide me with a source on that? Or are you just assuming that anyone who wants to emulate a Nazi has clear goals and the means to mass murder?

Truth is reached only through understanding.

Big if true.

If you step on a snake and the snake bites you, you're as much at fault as the snake

6,000,000 snake bit Jews last time around.  But it will be DIFFERENT this time, right?

Dude, you really don't have to keep proving your mastery of fallacies to me, I'm already impressed.

Alright, I'm going to leave you guys probably for another six months with this last, less assholish message of unconventional means to approaching peace.

I'm watching a documentary called Accidental Courtesy. You can see it on Netflix (https://www.netflix.com/title/80105514).

You might have seen it, you might not. You might think it's bullshit, you might not. I probably won't check back to find out, but I think it sums up pretty much part of what I came back here to say.

Catch you cats later.

Are you fucking kidding me? We didn't even get enough for B-Roll and now we're gonna have to shoot the Martini with some asshole off the street. I HAD YOU CONTRACTED FOR 9 PAGES YOU SANCTIMONIOUS SACK OF SHIT.

AND THEN YOU DISRESPECT THE INDUSTRY WITH YOUR SUB-5-STAR NETFLIX DOCUMENTARIES? YOU WOULDN'T KNOW TALENT IF IT BIT YOU IN THE DICK!

...

I need a fucking latte...

Trent, WHERE'S MY FUCKING LATTE?

You gave me exactly zero reasons to rethink my policies.

That happens when someone abruptly ends the conversation just as its getting somewhere meaningful.

But what do I know? I'm just a troll, right?

"Somewhere meaningful" for you seemed like a whole lotta herp-da-derp from over here.

OOOO BIG ROBOTS, BIG EXPLOSIONS, CONSTANT TERROR.

What an aspie, washed up sell out. He should go back to music video production. All those Transformer movies, and he still didn't understand how to transform into a halfway decent producer.

You know, that Trent fucker was probably working for Michael Bay... He's always been trying to steal my ideas...

WATERBOARD THAT CUNT, AND GET ME MICHAEL BAY'S DIRECT LINE.
