Think for Yourself, Schmuck! / An article I found + resulting ideas

I just read this article on Rick Warren's church though the magic of Stumbleupon, and it got me thinking: how could we adopt the "small, personal group" model that has worked so well for evangelical Christians, Communists, and AA? One problem I'm seeing with the methods we're proposing is that they tend to focus on either mass action, or one on one mindfuckery, without much of the tight knit cells that seem to work so well.

With most decentralized movements/organizations, it seems like the small communal element is key to their success with spreading. The problem with that though, is adapting that model to antiauthoritarian, dogma-free ideology, seeing as most successful decentralized movements have a core set of dogma. The most obvious solution would be to keep the basic "think for yourself, schmuck" catma, but try to encourage small group action more, in whatever way we can. Another possible route is through shared experience, rather than shared dogma, but then the question is what experience could bring together similarly minded people? Past attempts (i.e. hippies in the 60's) used the psychedelic experience, but when smoking weed or dropping acid spread to where it was commonplace, the novelty wore off and it stopped bringing people together nearly as much.

It's also possible to strip Discordianism down to the barest of bare bones (much like how Warren stripped Christianity down to a simply interpreted, theologically light "Purpose Driven" format), and get Discordian franchises going. Rather than trying to sell it from business to consumer, go business to business, again, the way Warren has. But then there's the emphasis on "everybody's a pope" and "start your own damn religion" that's messed that approach up in the past. The very nature of the idea makes it impossible to get us to act on anything but an individual scale.

Yeah, so I read this over, and I figured it's probably a repost, and doesn't come up with any concrete ideas, but I figure this might start some discussion.

Bring and Brag / I got bored. I wrote a shaggy dog story.

Once upon a time, two boys were in an argument. The nature of the argument was over who had the shaggiest dog. One little boy, named Billy, was firmly convinced his dog, Spot, was the shaggiest. Another boy, Joe, was equally convinced that his dog, Rufus, was the shaggiest. Both little boys had had a fair bit of trouble at home, and were growing apart after long years of friendship. The arguing had grown nearly constant, but with both having distant parents and living in a suburban, uncaring neighborhood, nobody had really noticed aside from them and a few of their friends.

Billy had proposed a contest to determine whos dog was the shaggiest. It was to be a contest to be determined by the neighborhood children. The plans were made, and later that day, they got together all their friends in the neighborhood, and decided to vote. After the votes were counted, it came up as a tie. Both Billy and Joe were furious that their argument couldn't end (and a psychologist could easily explain that this is because they secretly wanted to be good friends again, but because apologizing was "sissy", they had to settle it in some competitive manner. This is not to imply that this is particularly wrong or makes boys weaker, but it's simply what little boys do.)

Furious, they decided to bring their dogs to the neighborhood chili cookoff (a suprising coincidence with their argument, considering it was early April, and the cookoff was usually held in mid July. However, weather forecasts had shown it was to be unseasonably hot and dry that summer (quite possibly a result of global warming, or perhaps more related to el nino) and they decided it would be more prudent to hold the cookoff in April, despite the risk of rain.) Everyone in the neighborhood gathered together for the cookoff (in an all too uncommon display of local solidarity. The job market was collapsing around the city, and the people had grown restless, if not bitter and cold, in the wake of the constant threat of losing their once high standard of living.) They got their dogs out, and asked everyone to vote on who was the shaggiest. It took quite a bit of time for the votes to be properly counted (there were many people in the neighborhood), but once they were, it again came up as a tie. The tone had become almost desperate between the two boys, as they so relentlessly sought to end this petty conflict and return to their once happy lives, but they still persisted in the competition.

This time, it was to be decided by the whole city. Everyone was gathered in the town hall to decide what to do about the recent waste workers strike. Garbage was piling up everywhere in the small town, and once again, the ever more desperate residents came together in a stunning show of solidarity, all there for the simple aim of ending the strike and resuming with their lives. The boys knew nothing of this, however. They saw the trash piling up, but, being little boys, had no concept of what was really going on, and how desperate times had become. So, to continue their competition, they brought their dogs to the town hall, where everyone could vote on whose dog was the shaggiest. The votes were tallied after a long and arduous process, but once again, it came up as a tie. Right after the results were announced, Joe collapsed on the stage.

He was immediately rushed to the hospital. His mother began weeping uncontrollably. Her life had taken another turn for the worse. Her husband had grown bitter, cruel, and was turning to alchohol and cheap strippers in the abscence of any real love in his life. She saw his suicide note while cleaning their room, and tried to ignore it, waiting for him to end his life, too afraid of another one of his violent outburts to confront him. The hospital had fired her, under suspicion she had stolen painkillers that her job as a nurse gave her access too (and she was, but only for a persistent back pain her overcautious doctors never gave her meds for). It was all out of control, and now her baby, the one and only love in her life (for she'd given up on loving herself a long time ago), was hurt and nobody knew what by.

After months of taking tests and Joe's condition getting graver, they finally ran the last resort test: a test for HIV. He came up positive. They asked him if he was ever sexually active, but he wasn't. They asked if he was molested, but he wasn't. Finally, it came down to seeing if he had obtained it from a needle. After about a week of research, they found that similar inexplicable cases of HIV came from the doctor the family had been seeing. It was obvious little Joe got AIDS from a needle. A doctor's negligence, for no real reason ruining the life of a little boy who had his whole life ahead of him. Joe didn't know what AIDS was, but he soon came to learn how grave it was.

Upon hearing the news, Joe's father finally went through with it. Joe's mother returned to their house, only to find her husband, still on the floor with an empty bottle of her painkillers. She just sat there. Staring, blankly into the distance. Where did she go wrong? Why was God punishing her? There was no explanation. Nobody could help her. The doctors had already given Joe 6 months, but it was probably going to be less. The medical bills increased by the moment, and she felt something inside of her die. She brushed her hair, put on a clean blouse, and called 911. She knew what she had to do.

About two weeks later, young Joe was put on the talk show circuit, talking about what his experiences had taught him. He said what he was expected to say, but really didn't believe it. Pretending his life was worth anything would just be ignorant. There was no beauty left anymore, and the greeting card philosophy he had to tell all these middle aged house wives was driving him insane. He still had something on his mind, and that was his friendship with Billy. If his illness had taught him anything, it was to stop hiding the real motivation behind what he was doing. He knew that the shaggy dog contest was just an attempt to patch up his friendship. However, Billy didn't, so he knew it had to be settled. Using whatever power he had, he got Oprah to host what was to be the last of the competitions. For all of America to vote on who had the shaggiest dog.

It was all made very cutesy and spun into a game that he and Billy were playing, but they both knew something dark was behind it all. Joe's desperation met Billy's anger. Billy had grown sick of how much attention Joe was getting. Joe didn't deserve it! he said to himself, and he grew more and more hateful with every moment Joe had on TV. Why did Joe get to have everything make sense??? Why does he get to feel all this peace he's talking about??? Billy was sick with rage and a desperate desire to end this whole thing, so he set out to Oprah's studio, just to settle the competition and come out on top.

The show aired (live, in a rare moment), and the votes were cast. When it came down to it, in defiance of all statistics, it came up as a perfect tie.

It was then that little Joe died. His soul departed, and went up to heaven. It was there he met God and asked,

"God? Who's dog was shaggiest?"

And God replied,

"Billy's"

Literate Chaotic / A movie I suggest you all see

Quite possibly the only film I've ever seen that can be best described as "brutal". The opening title sequence could bring about a seizure, the second scene could make some people throw up and cry at the same time (and that's just the camera work), and there's a rape scene that is so messed up and realistic that it causes most of the theaters it's played in to nearly empty.

IMO, the ideas presented are a little too once sided and pessimistic, and is lopsided in its presentation of men and women (with men being brutal monsters, but I think that's a somewhat unintentional depiction, as it tries to point out that women are fucked up too, but just present it in the same visceral way). Still, it's a great movie, and I reccommend it highly.

Or Kill Me / I'm not upset anymore

I've watched a lot of TV. It used to make me mad. The fact that millions of potential humans are destroying themselves by tuning into the same bullshit and having it reverberate through all of society used to get me filled with a near Biblical rage at the world and how stupid it is.

The fact that only a very few people do think made me even more mad. Little enclaves like this are the only way to find any measure of intelligence in the world, and that's a depressing thought.

Life kept getting madder, because I realized I can't live up to my own standards, ever. Every method I attempt only puts me somewhere that's not quite enlightenment. I never had the balls to stand up and say "no, and you and the society you're building is fucking insane". Neither has changed.

The world is an ignorant place full of the fat complacent pack animals, psychotic alpha males (and females, I suppose) destroying themselves and bringing the world down with it, and faux revolutionaries who only know how to think like what their favorite T shirt companies think.

But that doesn't bother me.


Love is the answer.

Just like Burroughs said.

I really wish it was more special.

I am completely incapable of doing anything great. I will never change the world. I can get together with a mass of people, and we can make things look different for a little while, but it'll all go back to nothing eventually. All I have left to do is love. I love Bill O Reilly. I love those hateful, selfish girls on Super Sweet Sixteen. I love every person who has ever hurt me or the world. They dissappoint me, but they don't worry me. Pamphleteering goes nowhere, nor does protest or mindfucks. Love is all I can do. Hope as I might that that sort of unconditional love can teach and help others, I'm not stressing out over whether it will. Whatever the outcome, I am one with the world.

Overview
Psychosis is considered by mainstream psychiatry to be a symptom of severe mental illness, but is not a diagnosis in itself. Although it is not exclusively linked to any particular psychological or physical state, it is particularly associated with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (manic depression) and severe clinical depression. There are also detectable physical pathologies that can induce a psychotic state, including brain injury or other neurological disorder, drug intoxication and withdrawal (especially alcohol, barbiturates, and sometimes benzodiazepines), lupus, electrolyte disorder in the elderly (such as urinary tract infections) and pain syndromes.
The term psychosis should be distinguished from the concept of insanity, which is a legal term denoting that a person should not be criminally responsible for his actions. Similarly, it should be distinguished from psychopathy, a personality disorder often associated with violence, lack of empathy and socially manipulative behavior. Despite the fact that both are colloquially abbreviated to "psycho", psychosis bears little similarity to psychopathy's core features, particularly with regard to violence, which rarely occurs in psychosis, and the distortion of perceived reality, which rarely occurs in psychopathy.
Psychosis should also be distinguished from the state of delirium, in that a psychotic individual may be able to perform actions that require a high level of intellectual effort in clear consciousness. Finally, it should be distinguished from mental illness. Psychosis may be regarded as a symptom of other mental illnesses, but as a descriptive concept it is not considered an illness in its own right. For example, persons with schizophrenia can have long periods without psychosis, and persons with bipolar disorder and depression can have mood symptoms without psychosis. Conversely, psychosis can occur in persons without chronic mental illness, as a result of an adverse drug reaction or extreme stress

Psychotic states occurring after drug use may be particularly linked to drug overdose, chronic use and drug withdrawal. Certain compounds may be more likely to induce psychosis and some individuals may show greater sensitivity than others. Certain "street" drugs, such as cocaine, amphetamines, PCP and hallucinogens are particularly linked to the development of psychosis. Anticholinergic drugs (atropine, scopolamine, Jimson weed), and many antihistamines can also induce psychosis in some people.
Intoxication with drugs that have general depressant effects on the central nervous system (especially alcohol and barbiturates) tend not to cause psychosis during use, and can actually decrease or lessen the impact of symptoms in some people. Withdrawal from barbiturates and alcohol can be particularly dangerous, however, leading to psychosis or delirium and other, potentially lethal, withdrawal effects.
Psychological stress is also known to contribute to and trigger psychotic states. Both a history of traumatic incidents experienced throughout the life-span, and the recent experience of a stressful event, is thought to contribute to the development of psychosis. Short-lived psychosis triggered by stress is known as brief reactive psychosis.
Sleep deprivation has been linked to psychosis, although there is little evidence to suggest that it is a major risk factor in the majority of people. Some people experience hypnagogic or hypnopompic hallucinations, where unusual sensory experiences or thoughts appear during waking or drifting off to sleep. These are normal sleep phenomena, however, and are not considered signs of psychosis.

They tend to start talking about pills at this point in the conversation.
She keeps looking different. When her face expresses it seems to overdo things.
Her chin keeps hitting her knees while she shouts fire.

I keep having to be on the internet to find out what has been happening to me.

It may have started when they started giving me those pills.

They said they were concerned about my increasingly erratic behavior.

They cited examples of when I repeated their thoughts to them.
But they got angry because they felt my knowledge of them was threatening.

By that time I learned to control repeating the thoughts. They said the pills were working.
But they knew god damn well they were poison.

Sometimes things start melting without me asking.
Frequently the words melt. Sometimes there are new words, sometimes the letters just dance away from each other and come back when I look at them.
Perhaps their dancing is a secret ritual of sorts, which is why I never see it.

My mom keeps trying to pull things away from me.
She took away my Lovecraft when I pointed out my concern about the Great Old Ones and their schemes. She started calling people more when Cthulu kept using my voice for his thoughts.

My enemies are few and far between, despite the misconceptions held by my mother based on my admittedly excessive expressions of my concern about them.

Reality testing
Reality testing is a common method that people use to determine whether or not they are dreaming. It involves performing an action with results that are difficult to re-create in a dream. By practicing these techniques during waking life, one will eventually dream of performing a reality check—which will usually fail—helping the dreamer realize that they are dreaming. Examples of reality tests include:
‚Ä¢   To read some text, look away, and read it again, or to look at your watch and remember the time, then look away and look back. Observers have found that, in a dream, the text or time will often have changed[11].
‚Ä¢   Flipping a light switch or looking into a mirror. Light switches rarely work properly in dreams, and reflections from a mirror often appear to be blurred, distorted or incorrect[citation needed].
‚Ä¢   Closing one eye and looking at your nose, seeing that it's not there[citation needed].
‚Ä¢   Covering your nose and seeing if you can still breathe through it[citation needed].

Another form of reality testing involves identifying one's dream signs, clues that one is dreaming. Dream signs are often categorized as follows:

‚Ä¢   Context ‚Äî The place or situation in the dream is strange.
‚Ä¢   Form ‚Äî The dreamer, another character, or a thing changes shape, or is oddly formed or transforms; this may include the presence of unusual clothing or hair, or a third person view of the dreamer.

Though occurrences like these may seem out of place in waking life, they may seem perfectly normal to a dreaming mind and learning to pick up on these dream signs will help in recognizing that one is dreaming.

This is my first rant, and first post here, so tell me what you think.

   Look at the world around you, and can you say the normal, ‚Äúsane‚Äù individual truly lives a fulfilled life? What has happened to these individuals stripped of their identity? They are a product of a world without spirituality!
   Not that any of this is to say bullshit claiming to be the word of some great patriarch pimp in the sky is spirituality, but the soul, the primal drive for some sort of untamed, unmolded, uninhibited growth, needs to be reclaimed by man. Over the millennia we have learned religion and organization offers no solace; indeed they have only told us to destroy ourselves in anticipation of an unnamed reward.  But from where can we retain this sort of raw spiritual energy man seeks for fulfillment? Certainly Discordianism has offered the laughing disorder that frees us from withering away in an organized, restrictive world, but it is not enough!
   In this I offer the next step, cultural devolution, moving to a time when the world was still untamed by us or our order, past the beginnings of a Theocratic society to those of a Theacratic society of spiritual leaders guiding others to fufillment! What I mean is a return to the original way, the way of shamanism! Not the bullshit spouted by New Ager sellouts of ‚Äúgetting in touch with your totem animal‚Äù and such marketing schemes, but the techniques of spiritual ecstasy through music, dance, communal ritual, and substance use that marked the tribal worlds of early society! For a while we tried meditation, the Buddhist attempts at ‚Äúquieting the mind‚Äù to let in spirituality, but our generation will never truly be affected by settling down, sitting still, and forcing away our disquieting thoughts. We have gone far into what can be clich?©d as the Information Age, where our youth must process huge amounts of knowledge to simply survive. We can see around us a desperate attempt at a return to life! Even those who are still sitting on their couches are filled with discontent at the system which restricts them so, though their frustration is being tapped by whatever power hungry organization (i.e. the Religious Right, the Democratic Party, almost any corporation). Meditation is nothing but the same extinguishing of life for entrance of a new one that religion is, and will never keep hold with our society.
   But how should we cause this return to shamanism in our society completely changed from the days of shamanism? Easy friends, we must embrace (and bear with me here) the rave movement. I know what many of you will say to yourself, ‚Äúthose ravers are just a bunch of dumb teens on Ecstasy looking for a new scene to attach to‚Äù. But that‚Äôs not the case. Raves are like any other concert, and may be even cleaner. But the specific reason for the rave is that it is absolutely a shamanistic ritual in its entirety. Pulsing music drives the ravers in the same way the shamans of old were moved by the music of the tribe; the ravers dance out of a genuine spiritual ecstasy; they immerse themselves into an environment full of heat, motion, and powerful bass drums rattling through their body to create an energy that fills them entirely; and partake inso many other shamanistic action all leading to a mass spiritual cleansing and rebirth. And from this comes secretaries, deliverymen, and others who still hate their jobs and surroundings like everyone else, but have something to live for and know that some great spiritual need has been filled within them. Shamanism can be reborn, it is already being reborn, and it can be given unto a world that cries out for it.
