Apple Talk / Re: Introductions, Part VI: Welcome to Our PD Party
« on: January 23, 2018, 10:20:22 am »
1) Last fall when looking for post-modern and post-humanist books to read I found PD, the book, on a Wikipedia page for parody/post-modern religions. I started reading it, thought it was funny, but then stopped and moved on to a different pdf. Later I audiobook'd the Illuminatus! Trilogy and was provoked by the logogram/biogram theory of action. After finishing the trilogy, I looked for further reading on the subject finding only one journal article titled 'Dissipating the Logogram'. It was a good read, but I wasn't satisfied with his resolution... ended up on PD, the forum, several times in my search. Too many times and I am here.

2) From what I've read, the other Greek Gods weren't the best judges of character. But yeah, I'm askin' for it.

3) I cook practically, might add some recipes there but they aren't fancy. Here's an easy one for now.

0. If this is your first time working with pasta and you need extra luck, try throwing a pinch of salt over your shoulder into the pot. If not, skip this step.

1. Make spaghetti. From scratch is cheaper but box works just as well. The key to knowing when the spaghetti is ready is a sudden change in the smell of the room. After the smell changes, let it cook a bit longer. If you can't smell the difference yet, do a flexibility test of the pasta and try it every now and then. It is essential the spaghetti gets a lot of water in it for this recipe. Also, I don't think it is important to boil the water before putting the spaghetti in as long as it is kinda hot.

2. Drain the spaghetti. While draining it is easy, if you mess up you can end up with sink-spaghetti a different, less desirable recipe. Also, it is important to pour it out of the pot when you drain it, so it gets airtime.

3. Here is the twist. Then freeze the amount of spaghetti you will eat. The goal is not to freeze it thoroughly, but to get a soft-freeze. Frozen spaghetti, as long as it is malleable, is very refreshing and enables many more pairings rather than just tomatoes and cheese. I recommend pickles in my frozen spaghetti, but I wouldn't eat pickles in hot spaghetti. Alternatively, frozen spaghetti can be a straight dessert as an ice cream substitute if paired with something sweet. Lastly, semi-frozen spaghetti is not as messy. Because it does not slip around and can be bitten into rather than slurped, frozen spaghetti is a better option for fancier meals, I'd imagine. I freeze spaghetti practically, not fancily, so I wouldn't know on that last pro.

I think you're looking for the Pastafarians.

 :horrormirth: Quality post.

And welcome everyone. If you are going to flounce at any point in time please make it good.

To be fair, it's generally a bad idea to read any version of the PD. But for sure one without pictures should be avoided.

May I ask why? I am confused with Discordianism a bit as I am new here. But you sound like a Pizza shop owner telling his customers not to eat pizza. I don't get it.. Is this book worse than The Psychonaut's field manual? (which I have not read and probably wont). Does it distort one's mind or something?

Don't believe anything anyone tells you.

The Principia Discordia is totally harmless.

Definitely get one with pictures.

One problem I see with UBI, that perhaps stems simply from my economic illiteracy is:

Wouldn't it just lead to crazy levels of inflation?

Too many ions and the water gets sucked out of you. Too few and the nutrients get sucked out.

City Manager sounds like my job, only with old people.  So, uh, have fun?

Frankly, it looks like it's gonna suck, but I am too broke to be picky.

Well here's hoping it produces some good stories at least...

And more downtime is good too eh?

So i'm moving to Malaysia at the end of the month. Flying out this weekend - a week in Dubai for training then a week in Vietnam visiting customers before my contract even officially starts before finally ending up in Kuala Lumpur.

Pretty excited. Kinda nervous.

Thanks to those of you who encouraged the decision. I should still be about.

No sense trying to make non-sense of this board. The live posts this moment: yours, gaming posts, other cramps. Is this all there is? Any of y'all get out of yer house and do somethings? Or is it a sit-in-your-room & post on the internet dealy? ( O.K., I really like the shared art. That r'ocks) But can I show you an image of a mouse with a human ear growing out it's side?  I'll be sitting in my room when I post it.

Some of us post from work as well.

Has the number of people attending each week dwindled? It sounds like hard work.

Could you give some examples of the exercises?

Thanks for the detailed updates, very interesting stuff.  :)

There's been so much mental news lately it's hard to keep up.

From what I can tell from the tax evasion stuff nobody's going to prison because a) they're rich and b) it's (in some cases) a bit of a non-story because it's all been done through hedge fund managers who are diversifying assets. Not like the Queen is personally picking all of her investments.

From the rapey politicians... also probably nobody unless some  way more severe and substantiated allegations come out.

So I finished The Attention Merchants. I think it was interesting and seemingly pretty comprehensive as a history of advertising right back from the first newspapers through radio, cinema, TV and up to the internet. It could have done with a bit more of a conclusion perhaps but I guess just knowledge about what's assaulting your brain is valuable enough.

I have started trying to read Cradle to Cradle, a book about the circular economy in manufacturing. So far it's been saying the current 'harm reduction' methods introduce too much guilt and not enough action and then spends pages going on about how everything we make is slowly killing us and the planet. Pretty depressing.

Taking a break from that i've started Three Dangerous Magi which I guess you could call a primer on Crowley, Gurdjieff and Osho.. it's well written and I didn't know much about the three men before I started so i've been enjoying it.

However I will say that violence begets violence - I don't see an end to the escalating tensions that seem to be occurring in right now. It's not like the Nazis are gonna take being punched lying down. Things are gonna get worse before they get better.

I guess the best that we can hope for is the next Nazi rally gets met with even more resistance from people who are, unlike Elvis, seeing that allowing poisonous ideology to be openly expressed isn't a path with a good ending.
