Nothing, really, Heinlein pulled the whole thing out of his ass cause he wanted to write something that was Anti Monogamy and Anti Monotheistic, because nobody had ever gotten away with that before.  It's actually got a lot less philosophy than most of his shit, but it sounds good to New Agers.
