Several times a month, I will be in a store aisle reaching for something and feel a hand going up the inside of my thigh. When I turn around to find myself alone with a woman, and ask her if she would prefer me to hold still so she can get a better feel for the situation, oftentimes she will act "shocked" claiming nothing had happened, it must be somebody else...

Subliminal Message

What is a subliminal message?

a message delivered 'below consciousness'

what that means is that you are paying attention to something, but there is also other messages being beamed at you (that you are not paying attention to)

this happens all the time

People find the implications of subliminal messages fascinating -

what effect do subliminal messages have?

what effect can they have?

There is messages beamed at you all the time.

To intentionally broadcast a subliminal message would suggest a desire to keep the message below a person's consciousness, but have the message delivered nonetheless

it suggests that the message will somehow get into a persons head, and eventually factor into their decision-making process at some point (without them ever having realized that they received the message)

no doubt this topic can be looked at from a few angles, but what are the initial thoughts that come to mind when you consider subliminal messages?

my hunches are as follows:

subliminal messages would require repetition to be effective --> but from this angle, i dont see how they would differ from regular messages that often need to be repeated in order to make an impact

the presence of something in your line of sight forces you to consider it (the reverse of 'out of sight, out of mind')

if you continually make a connection between 2 things, then the connection will remain in peoples heads for a while (instead of flashing random messages)

questions:
is the general practice of schooling children and teaching by repetition a form of sending subliminal messages?
repetition repetition repetition

drop some perspectives on this if you have a chance

It's better to teach with discussion and examples and object lessons.

Less room for dogma, if you do it right.

What effect does dogma have on subliminal communications?

To spiritualists, the world itself is a subliminal message, barely to be noticed.
What's it say?

What's that?

I can't hear you!!

Wake the HELLFUCK up!!!!!

...Oh, that's what it says.  Better read mystical mumbo jumbo instead.

Subliminal subtlety can be more effective than rude, in-your-face counter-propaganda.

Subliminality is that which isn't LOUD enough to be remembered and resented, yet rings a bell.

There is something to be said for non-offensive discordianism.  Many people pay more attention to that which doesn't command attention, while casting obnoxious realists into the back of their mind.

A sublime approach might be more appreciated.

That is to say,

Shit on the floor of your best friend's bathroom, but do it under the bathroom rug so that the effect will be more profound.

For me the real lulz in subliminal messages (regardless of what degree their effectiveness) comes when one gets exposed and everybody freaks out and goes "OMGZ the president of france cheated!"

this is a interesting angle to explore

it might be a marriage of a couple of elements as well - it may be strategically effective to aim at subliminal targets
and
since the targets are subliminal, perhaps it requires (a lot) less effort and perhaps there is (a lot) more room for error

Don't forget the dreaded backwards masking. afaik it's never been proven that the subconscious mind can listen backwards but it scares the shit out of christians whom, let's face it, have never let reality interfere with their belief system.

"Do it" FTW

Your whole LIFE is made up of subliminals.  What is good, what is bad, what is black, what is white, what is GREY.

The rare subliminals ask you to thing/speak for yourself.

That's what makes this movement within Discodianism so appealing for me:  the idea that someone, somewhere, is whacking the rest of the populace, one n00b at a time, with a barstool.  And the message within the birdies circling around the head is:  THINK FOR YOURSELF, ASSHOLE!

AFK

Interesting discussion.  I remember Judas Priest went on trial because of some kid who offed himself listening to a song of theirs that supposedly had a subliminal message on it.  If you played the song backwards the phrase "Do It" was supposedly audible.  And of course, like anything, if you convince yourself enough you will hear the "do it" or the two stressed syllables that could be "do it".

Of course, then the question would be, do what?  Oh that's right, because it's a heavy metal band called Judas Priest it must mean kill yourself, not, say do the laundry, or go mow the lawn.

The question I would pose is what is the difference between a subliminal message and a subtle message?
Cynicism is a blank check for failure.
