I think the basic idea of freedom = choice is not too simplistic, IMO.  Its a good starting ground for building on other ideas, such as bad faith, relationships with others, the metaphysics of freedom vs determinism, brain mechanisms, ideas of consciousness and ego etc.  Shit, remove the stuff about negation and Sartre wrote well over 500 pages on the topic, in just one book.

As a basic idea, I agree. 


But avoiding the building part just leaves a big square of concrete in the dirt.
