I still think any movement needs its detractors.

Keeps the followers and those with the initiative on their toes.  And you can always choose which critiques to discard and take up.

Modern Discordians have finally almost created a new idea on their own . . . they only had to rip it off from an imfamous CIA investigated sci-fi hack named Dick. How appropriate.

This idea is known as the Black Iron Prison, and the basic concept is that your own perceptions are a prison from which you can never break free from. Once you realize you are trapped in a prison you can try to break out, but once you are outside you realize you are trapped within a larger, more impenetrable, prison. No matter what you do, or what you try, you are trapped.

What a cheery concept.

They offer no ways to get out, or think around this concept, its just laid out there and you had better digest it, accept it, and like it or you are a shallow fool who doesn't get the 'harsh reality' of the situation.

The idea comes from Dick's book Valis, which nobody I know has read or even heard of. The more obscure, the better, I guess.

Which disgruntled noob was this?

Its one of our own, posing as a passably intelligent (but not too smart) critic.

Details?

That wasn't as funny as I thought it would be.

I even remember the context of mine.

None, but I'm 99% certain.

Of course, it could be Laz, but the arguments on the page are all so painfully flawed, yet well written and show some thought.  Which I don't think he can do.

I think the Concordia movement is supposed to be tongue in cheek. I don't see the author as a "critic". Reacting negatively to his "critique" only proves that you're taking him/yourself too seriously.

Quote from: Rev. What's-His-Name? on March 15, 2007, 12:10:39 PMI guess lately my curmudgeony opinion is "fuck 'em".  If they are so dense that they can't get out of their own way to see what is being said, we don't need em.  Really.  I truly believe if I had picked this up, didn't know any of you cats, or anything about the PD, I would have gotten it.  "Yeah the world is fucked up!  Damn straight!  But, if I can keep my wits about me, if I can keep ME, I have a fighting chance."

Besides, do we really want to get at people who are so vapid and only skim the surfaces in life?  If so, then yes, this approach will never, ever work.  Maybe that's where the magazine comes in.  Gloss it up.  Put some BIP-babes in the centerfold.  Put in a crossword puzzle.  Put in some Discordian Recipes.  Oh, and of course, we cannot forget the complimentary spoon.

please to think about a certain point in life when your paradigm totally told you you were right, you found something that contradicted your paradigm, you quickly skimmed the surface and dismissed it with a few easy puns/punches. then later you learned the error of your mistake, you found out that you had it in fact wrong, delve a bit deeper and stretch your paradigm a bit wider (like goatse-man).
what i'm trying to say is, that some of these people that initially get it 'wrong', are smart guys, they just need to be shaken up a bit, open up a bit. well, maybe some of them should. now i'm thinking of Laz's "ZOMG MASONS" write-ups i'm not so sure.
but the point stays.

also i'd like to know who these concordia-movement ppl are then?

I hear what you are saying.  When I use the word "only" I mean it quite literally.  People who literally only skim the surface, no matter how much shaking.  And besides you give another example of why the sort of "tough love" approach of the BIP pamphlet is necessary.  Sometimes you have to stop spoon feeding, jam the spoon down their throat, and tell them to wake the fuck up.  And if you are not going to wake the fuck up then please, for the sake of my sanity, just move aside and get out of the way.  Lock em up in Wal-Mart and seal off the entrances.

Cynicism is a blank check for failure.

Triple Zero

i agree, although the "people who literally only skim the surface" are a theoretical kind of people. well, okay maybe not. i wish they were. but such kind of people are not hard to weed out. they practically do it themselves.

Yes, my point being we shouldn't seek them out.  We shouldn't pander to that type of audience, thus, once again why I don't think the so-called depressive negativism of the BIP is an issue.  If we are talking to cats with an inkling of depth, they'll figure it out.  The rest of them, fuck em.  That's my attitude.

Hi,
Just read the Principia Discordia, being a roleplayer and having an open mind  (an essential pre-requisite really) I have been interested in alternative religions/belief systems more leaning towards the themes  of Chaos and Paganism. I think I've found something I can relate to in the Principia. :) I decided to google about and see what people were saying about it, I just knew there'd be a forum out there and am delighted to find one, even better that it's populated by a bunch of roleplayers. :) I've been roleplaying on and off for about 13 years. The RPG group I was with got too big and I was falling asleep waiting on my turn so I left for a couple of years(!). I am about to rejoin the same group, which has shrunk a bit since we parted ways and am looking forward to it immensly. Strangely, most of the people in the group have turned to Wicca/Chaos Madgick, or a branch of Paganism from their born into religions/belief sets. I am the only Discordian in the group. Mostly my characters are preists and clerics, so it looks like I will be adapting Discordianism into D&D, etc, possibly even the Red Dwarf RPG. :)

How things change. Now I'm less into RPG and more of a retard. I=W1Nn4R!!!!11!1

i get where you're coming from, and i wonder up to how far this is a workable attitude.

i think you're right, at least up to the point where our propaganda works so well that people might have heard the "negative prejudice" before they even get a chance to approach the surface.

but given that most people we bring into contact with this stuff probably haven't ever heard about it before, and definitely wouldn't give any credit to the likes of Laz, i suppose you're completely right.

Oh, if anyone is wondering, Terry Pratchett did steal ideas from Discordianism to put into Discworld Noir.  He also used a fair few similar themes in the Thief of Time (such as the character Kaos was one of the 5 horsemen of the Apocalypse).

If you haven't read Thief of Time yet, you really should.  Its incredibly Discordian.  You have the bullshitting "wise man" monk, you have the fight between order (typified by the Auditors) and disorder of humans in general, and some pretty good semi-mindfucks.  The sign "do not feed the elephant" was a pretty good one.
