Ok, so, they're not really my rhymes, it's a Dead Kennedy's cover.  I did do the beats though.  Fruityloops in case you're wondering.  I've been meaning to either cover some more punk stuff, or start working on my own rhymes, but apathy got ahold of me.  Plus, I can never make any beats I actually like.  Just thought I'd throw it up here for some feedback.

Thanks, LHX.  It started out as something fun to do, and I never really planned to continue it.
(not that I've done anything recently)

But when it was finished, I got that same feeling, it was Almost something.  I want to do more, but I feel like a monkey who got lucky with a typewriter, it seems like anything I do now just sounds awful.

I keep trying.

Some suggestions:

Replace the 909 kicks/crashes/toms/everything with the 808 equivalents thereof. You'll get a way more electronic, tinny sound that won't sound like you're faking organic sounds. (If that didn't make any sense, I'm referencing the fact that you're current drum sounds sound like they were sampled from a Roland TR909 drum machine, and I suggest using samples of a Roland TR808 drum machine instead. If you don't have samples of either, PM me and I'll send you mine.)

Needs a synth, if only to play the occasional note (with lots of reverb thrown on for good measure.) I suggest using some Moog or Arppe samples to get that analog goodness.

for a kickass 808 and 909 synthesizer/emulator, get Rebirth. i think it's free. and otherwise it's on torrent.

it also features a 303 (acid bassline 18db lowpass resonance filtered square waves FOR THE MOTHERFUCKIN WIN)

only downside to it is that it also emulates the interface of those synths which is not too bad with the 808 and 909, but for the 303 it can be hell but it'll give you that authentic feel, you know :-P

It looks like ReBirth is only available for OS9.  Do you know if it works on OSX?

i only used it under windows, myself.

but afaik, OSX can run OS9 programs or not? only with reduced performance or something.

Not always.  Some older versions have a "classic" function that runs OS9.  Mine is not one of those.


I used to have Reason.  It was awesome.  I wish I could afford a new copy.

I used to have rebirth, and yes, that's what pissed me off about it.  I don't have any noise apps installed atm, and considering I have 478mb of free space on my HD, I won't for awhile.

I used to have Reason.  It was awesome.  I wish I could afford a new copy.

I've seen it on some torrent sites.  I d/led it awhile ago, but never got around to installing it.  Probably gone now.  Everything is, and I still have no disk space.

acid lead 24db lowpass resonance filtered extremely distorted saw waves with extremely fast cutoff modulation for REAL ULTIMATE POWER! (extra points for distorted 909 kick.)

Needs an instruction manual entirely in Japanese for real authenticity.

sorry but the 18db authentic 303 filter pwns the sound of the newer 24db filters, imo. you can hear the difference, it's not the same. the 24db has a steeper cutoff, more sharp resonance, so the resonant frequency becomes a "tune" of some sort by itself.
it's the fact that you can hear those two "tunes" simulaneously, that draws me to acid.

(I do love the original, fat, warm 303 sounds, but it's the modded/emulated ones that are always cooler to me. Maybe it's that I wasn't around for the days of analog circuitry...ya geezer  )

i wasn't there either (i'm 26), but i try to know my classics

also i tried building a software 303 emulator/synth once. it was fun. it was also not part of the assignment i was supposed to do, so i didn't finish it so i kinda have a soft spot for it's "tweaks"

there was a great website that told the "303 secrets" which i consulted a lot. that, and spectral analysis of Rebirth samples. with the resonance turned up you can easily see the shape of the filter envelopes.
