That thing is voltage controlled?

Cool.

How in the hell does one use an instrument like that?

I've heard the shit that comes out of them and I'm, like, "WOW!" but I can't imagine playing it

Do you plug a keyboard into it or something?

From what I can tell, it's got an on-board looping sequencer.  As it loops, you can add more beats/sounds, and it will remember it, and loop it.  Quantized, as well, IIR.

At least, that's what I think happens.

P3nT4gR4m

Damn - I've tried shit like that but it ends up annoying the hell out of me.

I'd love to be able to pull of that kinda shit too but I just don't have the patience for it.

The structure of the sequencer directly affected the way dance music was written.  You can put that (fucking annoying) 4-on-the-floor kick, and let it go.  then you just add and subtract various clicks, pops, and keyboard lines until the E wears off.

P3nT4gR4m

Yeah I can see that now. The dance music I tend to like (prodigy, fluke, chemical bros...etc) are the ones who seem to take it a step or two up from this.

Yeah, newer technology and cheaper samplers let the breakbeat make a comeback.

Triple Zero

the 303 doesn't have a kick.

it's just makes the squeaky rubbery acid bassline. for the kick you need an 808 or 909.

silly, you can download Rebirth and try it for yourself. the user-interface of that program is identical to the original synths (yes that means you have to drag your mouse to turn the knobs)

rebirth emulates two 303s, one 808 and one 909.

FYI, the 808 makes the beats more popular in retro-electro these days, while the 909 makes the beats that used to be so popular in 90s rave music.
try it, you'll feel a wave of some sort of nostalgia, because the drum sounds are so fucking recognizable.

It's sequencer based, but not looping. You get one sound at a time, and it's controlled by sequencing out what notes are played at each 16th note.

If you'd like a decent fake of one, you can download ReBirth (as 000 pointed out) or you can put yourself on the waiting list for a x0xb0x, which the holy grail of 303 imitations, which is only 300 bucks (and a lot of waiting.)

It is confirmed:  ReBirth doesn't work on OSX.

I hate to point out the obvious, but...

that's what you get for using a product pitched on TV by the annoying vaguely emo-kid-ish guy from "Waiting".

Rebirth was a fun little toy I played around with many years ago, just after I graduated. It was REALLY easy to make basic loops, and it was a good time to get stoned and try to make interesting techno beats, or recreate other beats.

As a recording tool it's kind of lacking, as a composition tool it's pretty limited. There's a BUNCH of stuff that works with OSX and ProTools that is MUCH more comprehensive (can't remember the name of the thing he uses atm ... stupid brain!) - my roommate has a bunch of stuff he runs on a MacBook. I'll have to ask him what he's running, and forward the info along.
