Yeah, he did slur his words pretty much the whole time I knew him in person, but when I first met him in '04 he still communicated quite well and quite clearly said airreese.

I AM an MLA folk, but I've actually had the principiadiscordia.com website bookmarked for at least a year... and dear BogusMagus led me over to this forum via his posts on MLA about this place.  

As for how I knew Bob... the MLA had just started, Bob participated directly on the forum and in classes, and I got brave and asked him to officiate my wedding (not realizing the state of his health).  He politely declined but invited me to the Wednesday book nights at his place, since I live close to Santa Cruz.  I visited him sporadically until about 4 months before his death.


As for Aeris, lots of FF fanboys call her Aerith, which always makes me think that they've all got lisps... or should that be lithps?

But I still say "air-is" and "Prinsipia"... I loved that old man Papa Bob, but I liked my pronunciations better... and besides, I got the impression he really didn't like people thinking or saying things just cuz he did... I remember him telling me once, with a rather serious look on his face, "one should remember that 'fan' is short for 'fanatic.'"

I know...hehe.  I have several hours of his lectures and radio/television appearances.

Prinkipia is actually correct.

I don't pronounce it that way, because I'm a lazy fuck, but that is how it should be pronounced.  No 's' sound in Latin.

Basically what you're saying is, if vulgar townsfolk had written the Principia Discordia in Italy, they probably would have written it in Italian and named it Principii de Discordia.

However, vulgar Italian townsfolk did not write the Principia Discordia, and in fact I don't even believe an Italian wrote the Principia Discordia. If we must, for some reason, translate the title into its writer's native tongue, we would simply call it the Principles of Discord or Discord's Beginning, depending on how you want to translate principium - I don't remember whether principia's -a ending functions both as the genitive and the plural in this case, although I believe that it does. However, if the author wanted people to call the book the Principles of Discord, then I believe he would have titled it as such. Otherwise, I must assume that because he did not, he would prefer it to be called by its Latin title, phonetically: "prin-kip-ee-uh".

As for the proper pronunciation of Eris, I wouldn't know. I never studied Greek, and discussions about Greek mythology and Discordianism don't end up happening as often in the real world as I might like. The way I personally pronounce it sounds like heiress, and nobody has ever corrected me, my mythology professor included.
