The only way I can kick moar ass is for people to tell me what's wrong with my work.

Not enough tits.

Triple Zero

the motorcycle pic is pretty swote, though.

about the other pic, if i can make a guess about what's wrong with it, it's taken from a slightly too low point of view making the girl look larger than the viewer?

I'll say it because no one else has yet, the motorcycle looks correct to me.
I like the picture of the lady and the shadowy figure too.  But I'm not in the business for making magazines so I probably don't have the right eye for it.  I would guess, perhaps the complaint with the motorcycle picture had to do with centering, although I really like it not being centered.  Anyway, I really have nothing else useful to add.

Cramulus

I like them both a lot.

The motorcycle pic is going in my Wallpaper folder. The other day I watched a documentary about Hunter S Thompson. That pic makes me think of the races in Fear and Loathing.

The second pic is really cool too. I like the lighting, and how her shadow sort of merges with the other darkness in the shot. The girl is walking towards the camera, which gives the shot a sort of immediacy. I especially like the foreboding hoodie-guy around the corner, and the two eye-like lights he's standing in front of. Really edgy.

Sir Squid Diddimus

i think the motorcycle is off center on purpose?
rule of thirds maybe?

i like them both.

RE: centered motorcycle

I never though an object in motion should be centered.  Something like the motorcycle should be off center.  Either like you have it, just managed to catch it as it zoomed by.  Or on the left half of the frame so that the viewer can imagine its forward momentum carrying it through and out the right side of the photo.

That One Guy

The only thing about the motorcycle pic is that there's no sense of scale. How far above the ground is he? How close to landing? Most of the time, motorcross and x-games type dirt bike stuff are showing not just the trick itself, but the trick in context with the environment, especially since part of the judging is the "hows" (how high, how clean is the landing, etc.) and there's no sense of that in this pic.

That's not to say I don't like it (I do - the angle you got is excellent and somewhat unconventional and the framing of the shot is great), but that's why I could see a publication going with a different shot. Personally, I've always preferred the less-typical angles for shots, ones that give a perspective that challenges the standard framings, angles, etc. that usually gets published. The typical stuff is usually typical because the photographers/camera ops are all set up in a specific location and thus all have similar angles and framings (and are generally somewhat far from the action or otherwise not in places where the average person is going to see things from like the sidelines or the dugout) and it's always great to see shots from places that are either just like where the average fan would be (ie nosebleed seats) or where no one typically gets to go (like with the motorcycle shot above - you had to be pretty much on the track underneath the jump to get that angle - not a typical spot).

Very cool stuff TTM

Yes and sort of. It's not exactly the rule of thirds.

The rule of thirds is kind of a rule of thumb...

Yeah, I dropped down to get the "halo" (from a light fixture) behind her head. This was for a story about stalkers.
