Sounds like too much effort.  But the idea of an almost dual, hidden forum is interesting.

I believe on phpbb its possible to allow individuals to see certain forums others can not (not by changing ranks or anything, but changing permissions on an indvidual level.  Running a dual forum like that for 6 months or so, then revealing it, would be amazing to see.

Yeah.  The mods would have access to everywhere.  Then stage 1 members would be recruited.  Then after a certain cut off point, every newly registered member would be put into new boards on the site.  Two communities, one URL.  Could be very interesting.

Where do you draw the line though?  Who is US and who is THEM?  Certainly, there are those present in these boards now that fit the criteria of THEM... Do they suddenly get restricted from their current access?   Sounds like a dangerous ontology to create. 

I think it could do harm to the site.   I'm discovering so much REALLY good stuff to read on this site now, and I think it's awesome that just anybody can wander in and discover it... maybe lurk about and get a decent picture of the projects to observe/participate in and some understanding of the social interplay, before posting anything.    (something i could have benefited from)

I don't know exactly what this seperation would entail, of course, but it seems like what you're suggesting would bury a lot of really good material, and it would be very hard for anyone to get past the first boards; to even know what they're missing.   If you came here, and all you saw was a bunch of trolls in the accessible boards, how long would you stick around?   

Assuming you did stick around, how excited would you be to find out that you are one of the lucky few who get accepted into the REAL boards?

Just a thought.
