Agreed.  It was the whole reason I wanted a telescope when I was a little kid.  That's one of the benefits of living in the frozen Tundra of Maine.  In the winter months the skies are extra clear and there's no light polution so it's great for telescoping. 

I was actually able to observe that comet that crashed into Jupiter.  I wasn't able to see the actual crash, but everytime a fragment impacted the explosion caused a flashing effect on the orbiting moons.  It was pretty cool.

I had a telescope, not the greatest, but worth playing with. I didn't see TOO much more than a good surface of the moon and Venus living in St. Petersburg, but we would take it up to Alabama with us and have a field day. Saturn can be tricky to find, but I was able to get a good shot of it a couple of times. I think I saw either Uranus or Neptune ONCE, it was a greenish crescent. I got really excited then lost focus on the damn thing. I'm thinking it was Uranus, because Neptune is fucking illusive thanks to it's wacked out orbit.

Yeah, I wanted to be an astronomer or astronaut when I was little.  The dream of becoming an astronaut ended when the Challenger went Splodey.  The dream of being an astronomer ended when I realized how much math was invovled.  Mind you, I was a straight A math student.  But, just because you are really good at something doesn't mean you enjoy it.
