Seemed apt, given the fread in question.

oh i don't know. some deep philosophical issues coming to light here.
Like the fundamental difference between stupid LARPers and stupid "steampunks"

Forrest has met his twin.

East Coast Hustle

at least LARPers are doing something, even if it's something we think is lame.

steampunks do not appear to have any redeeming value.

ETA: and I suspect that they're really all just closet emo kids with a flair for the theatric.

Some yahoo yelled at me, saying 'GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH', and I thought, "I'm feeling generous today.  Why not BOTH?"

Von Melee

That may be true.

But whether your finger's up your ass or up someone else's, they're still both shitty ways to waste time.
Regardless of social value.

And I thought emo kids were regular kids with a flair for the theatric

OH GOD...drama llamas2

Meh, I like steampunk. I like making crazy costumes, be they Halloween, LARP, SCA or whatever and honestly, a lot of steampunk looks far more creative than what most emo/goth/etc wear.

I have to agree with Rat.  Some of the designs and styles are more interesting than your standard goth/emo/industrial gear.

to wit:

WANT.

Von Melee

I will admit designs that hold true to the definition of steampunk, like that guitar?
8)

I hate the "fashion attraction" sTeaMpunks that think industrial/goth/rivethead/post-apoc counts.
"OMGLOL, Iyam SO totally steampunk, not [insert subculture clique here]! Don't bring me down with your socialist/fascist/oppressionist BS! Iyam expressin mah indavidualiteh!"

I don't care what you where. Just call it what it is.

As for LARPers, serious or beanbag, nothing beats the original d20 action.
Do what you want, just don't bother me with it.

d20 FTW!

Also, I have to admit bias since there is a big Steampunk themed party next Friday and Sjaantze and I are just finishing our costumes. However, I fully approve, because we're both doing stuff we've never tried before... Sjaantze is building a brass and leather corset, for example, complete with working clockwork in the chest.

Maybe its teh Gehy, but its fun, its creative and ... its kinda hot.

Every time I see that a new post has been made in this, it shows up on my screen as "Steampunk: the new L..." because of the size of the forum on my screen.

I ALWAYS read this as "Steampunk: the new LAME."

And then I giggle.
Be the trouble you want to see in the world.

Payne

I always expect the L... to turn out to be LMNO.

I cry a little inside.

My unsolicited 2 cents:

I like the aesthetics of clunky machinery and gadgets made of wood, brass, and iron. I am also somewhat fond of Victorian-era men's wear and hope to own a snazzy, accurate outfit of that period someday. However, I don't feel any real connection to the "steampunk" nonsense. It's just a label for people to attach shit to.

AFK

I still wear flannel and denim.  I'm a little behind the times.

So is everything ;-)

When someone says "Steampunk" it evokes a particular idea, at least for me. If it evokes the same ideas for many people, then it seems useful to me. Better than "Wild Wild West Punk" or "Full Metal Alchemist Punk" ;-)
