PD.com forums: a disorganized echo-chamber full of concordian, Greyfaced radical left-wing nutjobs who honestly believe they can take down imaginary Nazis by distributing flyers. They are highly-suspicious of all newcomers and hostile to almost everyone, including themselves. The only thing they don't take seriously is Discordianism.

Steampunk: the new LARP

I also got the impression that Conan there considered steampunk to be bad because its wildly unrealistic nature led to an empahsis on the aesthetic and stylistic aspects of steampunk.

Which is, well, kind of exactly the opposite of how I feel.  Any subculture that is bringing Victorian stylishness back in fashion isn't necessarily a bad thing at all in my book.  Plus some of the steampunk themed stuff I have seen, like the laptops, has looked damn cool.

Also, his criticism seems mostly to be based around the idea that steampunk is unrealistic.  Its a good thing Conan is so clever and able to figure this out, because no-one else has realised the reason we don't live in a steampunk world is because of the evolution of technology.  I bet when Conan read Lord of the Rings, he muttered to himself "rings don't make people invisible" under his breath, and wrote "unrealistic" and "biologically impossible" in the margins next to the descriptions of elves and dwarves.

Well, you know Cain, as inexorably as dancing leads to miscegenation, the next step after imagining unrealistic things is the making of art, which must be curtailed at any cost.
"I'm guessing it was January 2007, a meeting in Bethesda, we got a bag of bees and just started smashing them on the desk," Charles Wick said. "It was very complicated."

Give the little blighters an algebra text book, if they want to be "creative".  That's what Conan would advise.  And perhaps a statistical survey for Christmas, if they're good.

That's the spirit... that's how we achieve proper technological progress, of course. Not with these ridiculous flights of fancy.

I was kind of hoping Mr. One-Post, who almost certainly found this thread by Googling "steampunk" in pursuit of promoting his blog, would come back and try to defend himself.

But no. :(

So, it was pointed out on my Facebook yesterday that a crew of people should really dress up as plumbers, as they're the ones who keep the steam machines working.

I can just see it now, a room full of Victorian fops nattering away, when in bursts a gang of greasy, sweaty, pipe-weilding hooligans, talking loudly and crudely about life under the streets.

Could be good for a laugh or two.

Richter

You just described the last convention Suu, Gen. Stuart, Leln, and I all went to in Steampunk kit.

Anyone ever think about how Richter inhabits the same reality as you and just scream and scream and scream, but in a good way?   :lulz:

Pics?  I knew you guys were going as renegades, but not as a bunch of Blue-Collar mechanics.

I'd say we looked GOOD, not quite blue collar.  We were toting the hardware though, you saw pics of once wrench.  I personally had 20lbs. of steel on my belt until security escorted me out for having a "Spiky death wrench"

A few folks we met, and several friends were doing the "Ass deep in an engine" look though,  Coveralls, grease, and tools.  Come to think of it, I need to do this too.  It'd be cheap enough to pull off.
