Not at all, Net.  Minimalism can be reduced as infinitely as anything else can be complexified.  It just takes more skill to keep things simple and elegant.

Why not just run modern high-demand applications without balancing them on top of ungainly OSes at all?

Why, one would rather enjoy a minimalized command line based OS that maximized performance at the cost of a GUI.  Long live the Murloc.
