Metallica's credibility as a good metal band died with Cliff Burton.  But I suppose, it is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  I'd even concede that if I had heard the Black album, without any prior knowledge of what Metallica had been, I'd say it was a pretty good Hard Rock album.  I would offer no such excuses, however for Load, Re-Load, and St. Snare Drum.
