News:

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Coincides kinda scarily with this (got this in my email) :
QuoteI'm not such a big fan of conspiracy theories, but this is quite remarkable: hundreds of thousands of plastic coffins in the state of Georgia.

The additional control given to the government in the recent bailouts, will repeat what happened in the Great Depression. Instead of letting the free market set prices, the New Deal artificially set prices and interest rates, thus made the problem worse and it was still getting worse after 6 years into late 1930s. Such severe economic hardship (as in Weimer Germany) can give rise to fascist governments and a world war. With that in mind, could someone please give me a non-conspiracy reason for what FEMA could expect to use the 500,000 plastic coffins stored in a grass field near the Atlanta airport? Less than 49,000 deaths total in past 100 years have been attributed to natural disasters within U.S.A. mainland. The estimated death toll was 675,000 for the Spanish Flu in 1918 in U.S.A., but the world has experienced no such pandemic in past 90 years, so why the recent decision to purchase these 500,000 plastic coffins?

For the exact same reason the Pentagon buys 200 helicoptors of a certain type, when its own recommendations suggest it only needs 6 (excluding ones kept for parts).

Look, the federal budget is like a massive pie, and anyone with anything is right now running towards it with their forks outstretched, trying to grab a piece before the host says the dinner party is over.  Occasionally the host restocks the party, usually by raiding someone elses or threatening his staff to cough up what they have, but everyone knows the party is going to end sooner or later.

As for the "FDR made the Depression worse" bullshit....seriously, some people need to get over it.  I saw Mark Steyn peddling this crap just the other day, in his hilariously wrongheaded way.  Its funny, but if you look at the two countries who suffered the least from the Great Depression, you have....the USSR (zomg commies) and Nazi Germany (zomg fascists), both of whom enacted far more interventionist and radical policies than the likes of FDR, the French socialists etc.

The more common sense (less conspiratorial answer) to why so many coffins, is preparedness after katrina and 911 the gov (or the agency the coffins belong to) don't want to get caught with there pants down. In big disasters the number 1 health concern quickly becomes rotting corpses, durable containers that can be sealed to prevent the spread of disease are not a readily available resource even in the first world, morgues and funeral homes don't keep big enough inventory to cover the potential need. Why they are stored out in a field is a tougher question to answer

Or

a coffin maker gave a lot of money to George Bush, and its payback time.  If he doesn't....he'll wake up one day with a coffin in his bed, a la The Godfather.

Is anyone still in doubt that America is on its way to becoming a police state?

Yes.

It HAS BECOME a police state.

"On the way", my ass.
