Been deep in my nu metal bullshit. Have some highlights.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjTHH8gfYAE -- Crazy energy, really good music video. Aussie nu-metalcore has been a cut or three above everything else entering the pop-metal realm for the past 5 years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IvpFDHmcN4 -- Reminds me of old Slipknot but with songwriters worth a damn -- All Hope is Gone-era reinterpreting Iowa-era, basically. Just constant aggression.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2RIo_kCCWw -- Insanely technical in the drums sometimes, despite bounce riffing and the standard Limp Bizkit/Korn/etc guitar feedback flourishes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4X0CG11Byw -- One of the most flexible harsh vocalists I know of (probably only beaten by Adam of A Million Dead Birds Laughing), and has a really good Jason Novak-style nasally clean voice. This song has moments of sheer chaos, occasionally verging into the very edge of grindcore territory.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eh3GwkoIBSE -- /Actually/ mixes nu metal and death metal. Not what people think of when they think of death metal in the context of nu metal at all -- it's got weird Morbid Angel elements, odd gothic metal flourishes in the riffs, true death metal vocals, midpaced skank beats, the works, basically your standard 90s death metal stuff. It just also has hip-hop flow, bounce riffing, turntables, build-up/freakout songwriting sections, crazy bass presence... It's a hell of a weird mixture. Oh, that reminds me!

https://traitorbsdm.bandcamp.com/track/incarnate-compulsion -- Slam death meets nu metal. This is amazing. This makes something better by miles than either of them on their own. Fucking fascinating. Check the Coal Chamber S/T flow on the vocalist, the bounce riffing, the disco groove in the slam near the end, the buildup/freakout right after that ... it literally sounds like Devourment covering Korn. Just incredible.

There's over 100 of us in this meat-suit. You'd think it runs like a ship, but it's more like a hundred and ten angry ghosts having an old-school QuakeWorld tournament, three people desperately trying to make sure the gamers don't go hungry or soil themselves, and the Facilities manager weeping in the corner as the garbage piles high.

Nah, this is just the stuff I've been listening to lately. Relatively new, nothing released before 2010 here and all but the Meta-Stasis released this year.

Also! Nookie was released well after Limp Bizkit cut back the most interesting part of their sound: the guitars. Check out this nightmare noise rock shit in the guitars from their first album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDdGrlylcEU

I actually sincerely love the shit off of 3 Dollar Bill, Y'all. Later Limp Bizkit was just dull white-boy hiphop with guitars. This? This is legitimately interesting.

That's all well and good, but Nookie's importance is it's cultural value in reminding us of a pre-9/11 world.

After Nookie, everything changed.

some napalm death-ish riffs in there reminded me of this

but then i was like - wait, is he gonna start singing Entombed??

don't really care for the nu-metal stuff - but, hey, i'm old.  a lot of it was like going right back to high school.  astute description

More nu metal. This time, literally 2001! It's like a demonic, spiteful Papa Roach or TRUSTcompany. Lyrics are very much my mood today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IMKtNCNVbA

Recently found out Space Shanties are a thing, and they've become my new favorite form of filk music.

This is the most upsetting, disappointing thing I've heard in a long time.

In theory, this is my new favorite band. It's gothic metal mixed with straight up nu metal. I should love this.

In practice?

The guitarwork is absolutely garbage. The drums are so simplistic that it causes me pain. The male vocalist sounds like he's fucking bored. The /only/ person bringing their A game is the female vocalist, and /listen to that lady go/ holy FUCK. How the FUCK did she end up in this band? This is a waste of her talent. It's a waste of a great musical idea. It's a disappointment. Like, FFS, I AM LITERALLY YOUR AUDIENCE. You don't need to be amazing, mediocre will get me 100% on board as a rabid, obsessive fan. But no, I'm gonna hit fucking snooze.

On the flip side, I found this. Words don't really do it justice; the album cover is about right.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqDhowIoFPo

If forced to describe it at gun point ... take the post-hardcore flavored side of noise rock, shit like Pissed Jeans and Blacklisters. Replace half the riffs with weird ass atonal scrawling of The Paper Chase. Then add nu metal flavor. But I think people who hate nu metal would find this extremely compelling too, it's weird, vile stuff.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qzUiijhNpyA A Mexican band doing what I can only describe as Backstreet Boys trying to do Nine Inch Nails by way of epic, uplifting metalcore. It's amazing, unironically enjoyable. Really worth a listen, even if that sounds offputting.
