https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qzUiijhNpyA A Mexican band doing what I can only describe as Backstreet Boys trying to do Nine Inch Nails by way of epic, uplifting metalcore. It's amazing, unironically enjoyable. Really worth a listen, even if that sounds offputting.

I liked that one; left it on repeat for a bit.  Sounds like something that might play during the end-credits of a high-budget anime series.

I'm curious as to how you found it; the video has under 700 views, and the channel hasn't many subscribers.  Youtube's algorithm isn't very good at introducing me to new stuff.

Nu metal subreddit. It was posted awhile back there -- admittedly not that specific song (the song posted was Burn), but I got the album and I think Fenix was one of the best tracks on it.

Most of how I find new music is trawling Bandcamp, digging through small review sites and Wikipedia lists, and watching what people post when someone asks for "super obscure <genre> bands" in various music-focused communities.

There's over 100 of us in this meat-suit. You'd think it runs like a ship, but it's more like a hundred and ten angry ghosts having an old-school QuakeWorld tournament, three people desperately trying to make sure the gamers don't go hungry or soil themselves, and the Facilities manager weeping in the corner as the garbage piles high.

I posted this band before, but I've been obsessively watching the vocalist's one-take videoed vocal rerecordings of their songs. This one is one of the two best for really showing how upsettingly good he is. The other is Red Light for more clean vocals and unusual techniques not often heard in music (including the most terrifying literal fucking Muppet voice ever for the last bridge). Also it's just funny watching him freak the fuck out and emote.

And yes, you can be pretty certain that even the most absurdly close-to-the-actual-original-version ones are actually being redone in these videos. The one for Placenta has him use a prop on a chain, and you get to hear the clinking of the chain. In We, The Sad, he smacks the shit out of his own face (like I said, there's a lot of reasons to watch this shit), and that's quite audible as well. And in any of the videos, the volume of his voice changes when he moves too far from the microphone, or when he switches to a louder vocal technique without backing up first. Seriously amazing.

And yeah, I had to actually clarify that, because a couple of the videos made me sincerely wonder if the audio wasn't pieced together from studio takes. It's upsetting.

Pretty sure I've posted this band before but they're so impressive to this day. It's a goddamn shame they split up after this 2006 (!!!!) EP. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M5kyzw_QLg

Slam death metal, but with random post-hardcore and drunken bar punk stuff, mixed with an actual sense of humor and an impressive sense of rhythm and energy that is TOTALLY MISSING in most brutal death metal. There's a 7:25 IDM track. It's amazingly good (if simplistic) even by IDM standards, and especially impressive for an experimental brutal death metal band to do something that good. Despite being goofy trope-laden slam death at its core, there are many genuinely emotional moments  -- Morals Like Frozen Piss and Extensive Autumn Necrony are great examples of left-field feels passages in otherwise solid groovy slam death full of ridiculous goofy bullshit -- just. fuck. So good.

If you are REMOTELY open to brutal death metal you should try this band's EP, in full, front to back.

If you like my nu metal bullshit and wonder what it would sound like with open Green Day worship, listen to this.

If you think late 90s popular heavy music sucked and the above sounds like a recipe for the shittiest music ever, also listen to this. I'm not big on pop punk or the particular breed of nu metal this is drawing on (Papa Roach/Linkin Park style) and I /still/ fuckin love this shit. The band's just plain good enough to make it all work brilliantly.

This has been my background soundtrack for much of this last year.  Probably not that interesting to anyone else, but it's helping keep me sane functional truckin' on regardless.

ten56. is one of the best bands out there right now. What the fuck is this? You get the bejesus beaten out of you mercilessly for two and a half minutes (the guitar tone is less "meaty" and more "having a helicopter crashed into your fucking house") and then you fucking cry about it for two minutes more with some ridiculous soundcloud rap shit. If this EP comes out this year it will almost certainly dethrone 156/Silence, Vein.fm, AND Moodring's releases for my AOTY.

Never mind what I said about ten56. I wasn't holding a lot of stock in Gloom putting out an album this fucking good, but Trinity is uncontested. Best album not just this year but, I'd argue, at least since the beginning of the pandemic.

The whole album is this good. Better. The range is incredible. Amazing. It's stupid goth bro-core and I love it. I literally shed tears about it. Listen to the whole thing, listen to their whole fucking discography, they're amazing.

I've been obsessing over that Gloom in the Corner album.

There isn't a single weak track on it. Everything is immediate, emotional, catchy as fuck. The brutality of Behemoth and Nor Hell A Fury bookends Gravity and Red Clouds' emotional softness (which perfectly goes from elation and triumph to utter despair), Gatekeeper and Hail to the King have a kind of sarcastic meanness that just BUILDS and BUILDS, and the 5 track-long recap and character introduction from From Heaven To Hell to New Order is perfectly poised on the knife's edge of tears and moshpit energy. Pandora's Box is so perfectly bleak and hopeless, Clutch is a panic attack in 3 and a half minutes, and every song has a line that sticks in your head, from "Honestly, I can't breathe/Pull me close, don't let go" to "Well I died for you all/but resurrection's a bitch" (or if you hate Sherlock and all good things, maybe "Prepare for finality").

And it has a plot. The band is a concept band, every album has a storyline, and this one kicks ass. They manage to reference all but like, I think two? of their previous songs without making it unlistenable if you haven't heard the discography, and this is a new story arc with a very good summary of the story so far included right in the album! And if that's still not enough -- look, they released an honest-to-fuck 72 page recap. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/e991iugpp6sl5jz/THE%20FEAR%20ME%20ARC%20-%20THE%20COMPLETE%20RUNDOWN-compressed.pdf?dl=0

But also, the entire discography is a hair under three hours, so...

I swear, I wasn't even that huge of a fan before Trinity dropped. I didn't dislike them, but they were, eh, maybe top ten bands all time being very generous and keeping it to nu-core type stuff. Not top five, for sure, and not even top twenty all genres. Well: top three all time, all genres seems reasonable after this album.

I'll leave off with this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVqiGPLoCkU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myAu_ZyyNoU

All three of those songs are on the same album. And it fits. Incredible.
