that's cool - the drug education I got came exclusively through the D.A.R.E. program which was totally ineffective.
It was one of those cases where they only told you horrible exaggerated stuff about how bad drugs are. I knew a number of kids that tried pot, discovered it wasn't the satan-weed that we had been told would immediately decimate our short term memory and make us into unlovable cultural dropouts -- and then went onto other drugs.

so I'm glad they're getting a bit more well-rounded info these days.
I saw a study done a few years ago on the effectiveness of the DARE program. It showed that the rate of use of illegal substances by students in schools which had the DARE program was no higher nor lower than students who were in schools without DARE.  In other words, it accomplished nothing.  Except....

Mayors, city council people, school board members, etc. could show up and in get their names in the news about the great work they were doing fighting illegal drugs.

DARE really doesn't have the cache it used to have anymore.  That's because there has been a huge push for evidence based programs to provide substance abuse prevention services.  In this process, it's been discovered there are many other programs you can run in a school that have scientific evidence of their effectiveness, where DARE cannot make that claim.

Now they want evidence that an anti-drug program actually works? DAMN THEM!  :argh!:

Of course this is no way implies that I deal drugs....

W00t!  So, one of the 2 programs that pays my salary, that was on the bubble, is for sure renewed.  Well, minus a 3% reduction which the funder applied to all of the programs it was funding.  This would be the program that entails training high-school students to be peer listeners/supporters.  The one where we train them out in the middle of the woods of nowhere, Maine.  Now, this isn't the one that pays the bulk of my salary, and we're still waiting to hear about that one, but this is the program I get the most professional and personal satisfaction out of, and is the one I spent the better part of 2 months defending.  Looks like my work paid off.

Congrats! Hopefully the other program comes through too
People of the United States! We are Unitarian Jihad! We can strike without warning. Pockets of reasonableness and harmony will appear as if from nowhere! Nice people will run the government again! There will be coffee and cookies in the Gandhi Room after the revolution.

Arguing with a Unitarian Universalist is like mud wrestling a pig. Pretty soon you realize the pig likes it.

Yeah, my wife's hoping for the same.  She's been itching to raid the local greenhouses but has been on standby until we know whether or not I'll be receiving any kind of respectable income for the next 12 months.

Anyone ever think about how Richter inhabits the same reality as you and just scream and scream and scream, but in a good way?   :lulz:

Yeah! I'm really happy for you, RWHN! Congratulations!

And indeed, let's hope for the other one!

Danke.  Supposedly we're going to hear about the other one today.  I'm not holding my breath however.
