Hey, I just read the PD and found it interesting in many respects, I was looking to delve a bit deeper into Discordianism, read interpretations texts perhaps, or texts about it in general, perhaps one about 'practical Discordianism' (if such a thing is possible, I'm still debating myself about that).

For a more historical account of Discordia and counterculture, I'd recommend The Prankster and the Conspiracy by Adam Gorightly... it's a biography of Kerry Thornley (Lord Omar) and talks quite a bit about the original theater of Discordia.

QuoteI also read the Summa Discordia but alot of it seems to contradict the PD, seems to fall victim to the Eristic illusion nearly completely. Perhaps there's something which stays true to the teachings of the PD, if one might call them that?

I don't consider the PD a "holy book" in any sense. It's just a book about Discordia. A very important one. But it's not THE book on Discordia. So accordance with the PD shouldn't be a litmus test for what's a "Discordian work".

The Illuminatus! Trilogy (by RAW) is many people's first brush with Our Lady Eris. I consider it a bit dated, but it does invoke some of the paranoia and uncertainty that makes me think of Discordia  :)

The Apocrypha Discordia is also very much in the spirit of the PD. That one's good reading too.

I recommend the Wise Book of Baloney.

The only strictly Discordian book I've read is the PD, besides the stuff that has been created here.  I also read the Subgenius book which I thought was a good companion in some respects, and the Gospel of FSM, which I thought was kind of lame actually.

Anyway, my point being, what I found helpful was that the PD kind of got the thought juices flowing, and then just hanging around here and bouncing ideas off these spags helped further "educate" me.  But, I suppose that might not work for everyone.

In my opinion, Discordians learn more about their ideas by writing and doing, rather than reading. Old Bob wrote The Illuminatus Trilogy thinking he and Bob Shea would have a bit of fun and make some cash... yet, by the end of it, they both felt that the biggest success was how they learned more about our Lady's madness through the DOING.

The same might be said for Lord Omar, Malaclypse the Younger, Camden Benares and all the spags that contributed to the early days of Discordia's Return. Jakeing, Pranking, etc. and the Principia was fallout from their active invocation of She What Done It All....

Also, keep in mind that the Principia Discordia is a view of Discordia as put forth by POEE, as envisioned by the Joshua Norton Cabal. That doesn't mean it tells us what Discordianism is... only what POEE Discordianism, as envisioned by the Joshua Norton Cabal ... is. That being said, I personally think its still the best overall introduction into Discordianism. Fnord.

The ELF (Erisian Liberation Front) for example, held very different views of Discordianism than did the POEE. The ELF often directed by Lord Omar felt that Discordianism was all about mindfucking the rest of the planet...

Quote from: Uncle AlIt is disgusting to have to spend one's life jetting dirt in the face of the British public in the hope that in washing it they may wash off the acrid grease of their commercialism, the saline streaks of their hypocritical tears, the putrid perspiration of their morality, the dribbling slobber of their sentimentality and their religion. And they don't wash it!

Uncle Al wasn't a 'Discordian' per se, since he died before the PD was released... but he was a Discordian in some sense.

There are many sorts of Discordians. Some Discordians hold no belief in anything. Some Discordians see belief systems as temporary games of order and disorder, which they're free to play with at will. Some Discordians are atheists, some Discordians make fun of those  atheists which they see as afflicted by the curse of Greyface and being a Hunchbrained Cabbage. Some Discordians play in the mystical realm of esoteric models, while others sit squarely in the 21st century, spagging it up on IRC and PD.com. Some never do explain.

There is only one place where you can really find out what Discordianism is ALL about. Experience... and consulting your pineal gland.

That's the real thing though isn't it. Many people have trouble learning how to consult their pineal gland. Personally beer and weed helps put me in the right state of mind to go delving into the deep recesses of my own perverted mind. But drugs are only one way to get into what I like to call the "zone". In the end you have to try some sort of method or another before you find the right mixture for yourself, meditation works for some, while seeing a good jake pulled off masterfully will help others reach that happy place. It's mostly trial and error until you get it...then it all makes sense in a blinding flash and Eris may even personally congratulate you herself if she isn't too busy doing what ever it is she does most days. Just my two cents from a novice poster...please go easy on me guys.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. Right now I'm reading Cat's Cradle, thought I should take a wee break from two days staight of Discordian reading. I think I'll go to the BIP after that, perhaps then the Apocrypha, then start asking questions.

What do you mean when you say 'DO' and you will learn? Pranking, Mindfucking? They seem like Eristic Illusions, praising disorder over order when both are actually the same and just serve to cover up the underlying chaos. And I plan to start 'writing' soon, once I get a firmer idea of what I actually think about all this.

Categorizing everything into Eristic Illusion/Aneristic Illusion is part of the Aneristic Illusion.  Just saying.
