News:

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Cain, my best friend is a native italian speaker, maybe I can ask her to translate some bits for you/us?

BADGE OF HONOR

I would murder to have a kebab shop in my neighborhood.
The Jerk On Bike rolled his eyes and tossed the waffle back over his shoulder--before it struck the ground, a stout, disconcertingly monkey-like dog sprang into the air and snatched it, and began to masticate it--literally--for the sound it made was like a homonculus squatting on the floor muttering "masticate masticate masticate".

Sure, go for it.  I got these from my girlfriend, who speaks some Italian and is in Rome at the moment, but she certainly isn't that fluent.

Can't believe I missed this first time round. I was gonna visit Italy again some time, but FUCK THAT SHIT.

Also, it really worries me that the EU isn't so much as getting annoyed at this... Democracy my ass.

I suspect the EU is doing nothing because Berlusconi is a member of the majority, centre-right bloc that has control of the EU Parliament, which also includes Merkel and Sarkozy.  Neither of them are probably very happy about this, but David Cameron has already jumped ship, so they may feel they cannot afford further defections and fighting.

UNG. But how the hell was there no noise about this shit in the EP elections in July? The left could have made a killing on this! The timing was perfect as well, three weeks before the elections!

This is the same liberal-left bloc whom, despite years of neoliberal economic policies and mostly conservative governments being in power in Europe, still failed to gain a plurality (let alone a majority) in the European Parliament, in the worst recession in 70 years.

The answer is simple: they are morons.

The most cut-throat group that is part of that bloc is the Liberal Democrats in the UK, which tells you everything.  Its like the Republican election machine under Rove...but run by someone who drinks green tea and goes to bed by nine o'clock every night.

Also the media in Europe is like "LOLOLOLOL BERLUSCONI IS A DIRTY OLD MAN WHO FUCKS TEENAGE MODELS.....*ALLEGEDLY*!!!!!" because covering actual politics is too much like hard work.
