QuoteI was thinking a simple EQ like this would be sufficient.  It's not graphic, but what the hell.

That works I guess, I was actually thinking of tearing apart a BOSS eq pedal (or similar) and having holes in the body for the slidy bits.  If it was a six band EQ you could have them behind the bridge corresponding with each string?

QuoteYou've said a solid body would work best for you

PROTIP:  I secretly want to make a semi-acoustic, cause it puts me in a good position experience wise to make an electro-acoustic cello next year :)

Quote1 single coil, 1 Humbucker; 2 volume knobs (plus 1 master) + pickup selector (SC - HB - Both).

Yup, or maybe five-way selector given previous comment?

QuoteAluminum neck

EQ

2 output jacks

Yup, I'll see if there is a UK distributor for those kinda necks, I really like the look of the Kramer aluminium necks, if you've seen them?

I think the output jacks will have to be wired in parallel, which means they will both be the same volume, but half the volume that one would be on its own.. I think, so I can wire in a kill switch for one (or both), which should mean that when you're only using one through one amp it will be as loud as two through two amps.  Yeh?

I need to find out if the floating bridge and a hipshot would work, whammy bar notwithstanding.

Yes you do  :lulz:  I had a quick looksie, and evidence points to no (without a tremel-no or freelok), but you might find something I missed (hopefully :))

QuoteAs far as the body goes, the one you made on page 1 of the thread looks really cool.

You can't have that one...  its mine   , I'll draw some stuff later :)

You're in Foreign Lands, aren't you?

We might have to think about weights and measures, if yr gonna ship...

From my experience (shipping a bass from Canada to Aus) shipping costs about a third if you remove the neck to ship it. I did have to get the truss rod readjusted though (I didn't trust my self not to fuck it up).
It's not trolling, it's just satire.

Ok, fuck yes.

Sure, just to make things difficult, why not?

Dear lord, that sounds needlessly complicated.  But go for it, if it will make you happy.

Will do.

Incidentally, what the hell is this going to cost?

QuoteIncidentally, what the hell is this going to cost?

Don't know until we figure out exactly what pickups/neck/wood/bridge you want, but I can guarantee it will be under £2000 (unless you really splash out on some of the hardware), quite possibly under £1500, i.e.  considerably less than the starting price for most custom guitars.

RB,
undercutting competitors prices since 1991

p.s.  I can reccomend the Dimarzio Twang King for a neck pickup, its what I have on the guitar pictured.  The other one is a Dimarzio mini-humbucker,  an all-rouder, which isn't as nice, but i needed something versatile, cause it slides :)  Those two pickups plus a GOTOH Gibson style bridge cost around $220 (yes, I meant dollars).

EDIT:  scrap that ambiguity, we'll aim for under £1500 with shipping incl.

LMNO

Wow.

Hmmm.  I better start saving up money now.  Maybe it would be best for both of us if we waited until I could give you an advance, rather than have you build it, and me say, "oops..."

Roaring Biscuit!

aye thats fair nuff, I'll do a little lookin at pickup/bridge options etc. to get a more accurate idea of price if you like?

LMNO

Also, once you start the thing, how long would it take to finish?

Roaring Biscuit!

about 2-3 months at most, once its past planning, and assuming I can get hold of the materials fairly easily (should all be fairly straightforward apart from the neck).

My boat took about a month, my own guitar took about 2-3 weeks.

Also, I found a cheap parts supplier (as in, cheaper than other places, not bad quality) that does free shipping within UK

Record something - I need to know how this sounds! The copper under the middle pickup, that's gotta do something, right? Magnetic fields is something I'm clueless about but I'm guessing the magnetic field will be a different shape or frequency or centiliter or something?

Ok, so US$1900 might be a little high.

Let's scale back, and just include what I mainly use a guitar for:

Block of wood

6 strings

1 single coil pickup

Hell, I don't even need a volume knob.  How much?

'bout $700 +p&p

probably overbudgeting there, but I'd rather that the exact price was a pleasant suprise, as I'm sure you would :)

EDIT:  by overbudget, I mean, I double the expected price of the wood (to cover the eventuality you want nice looking wood), and added in a second pickup, and a mid priced neck not low end.

I would like a stringed instrument that has the following:

Semi-hollow

Six strings

The 1st and the 4th string from the top should have a hipshot to raise or lower the string at least a whole step (2 frets).

Floating bridge

tremolo bar

1 single coil pickup

1 humbucker pickup

1 D-Tar or similar pickup

wiring to isolate or blend individual pickups

2 output jacks

a Vocoder

It actually sounds very much like a normal guitar, only real difference is that that middle pickup can slide between bridge position as well (see voodoo chile by hendrix at 0:44 for an idea of what this effect sounds like, although jimi is doing it with a 5-way pickup selector).  The sliding can create some weirdness with effects as well, the slow attack on my pedal combined with just sliding the pickup up and down (without playing) creates a kind of grating metal wilaing sound.  It's pretty cool :)

Probably won't be able to record anything for a few weeks as that guitar is at home :(

Payne

On a only slightly related subject, RB and Trip: you better be getting your shit together for getting to Edinburgh on June 12th.

Or I'll "Customise" a guitar on your heads.

I have teh accomodation!  Just need a train.  On a scale of 1-Holy FUCK, what kind of  hangover should I be expecting?  thus what train would be advisable homewards?  *answer in Edinburgh thread please* :)
