I liked how they introduced her, like "her mother died in an insane asylum thinking she was Queen Victoria" and my thought was, I like where I think this is going. I was not disappointed.

A quick glance at my high school's web site shows that they still teach US Government classes. I can't remember if it was required for graduation or an elective. I had an awesome teacher for it, Mr. Goings. Unfortunately he's dead now.  :(

Our Senior Government class in high school consisted of a "Dream House Project" where you made a scrapbook of what kind of house, and furnishings and car you would own.  Oh yeah, and we had some tests, but they were only a small part of the grade.  I passed all the tests, and categorically refused to do the damned Dream House.  I still graduated with a F in government.  It was my last FUCK YOU to Oxford High School.

I had US government, but I don't remember much of it. It was probably useful to an extent, but nothing like a real civics class should be.

Why do civics classes seem to be such jokes? Its really not that HARD to teach the constitution, the bill of rights, the organization of government, how the legislature works, how government works at the state and local level, just the basics you know. And some stuff in there about the systems of government we see around the world for comparison, and things like the difference between social and fiscal politics. Hell, with a little boning up I'm sure most people on THIS FORUM could teach a damn good civics class.

I am qualified to teach civics, but they'd fire me in a week.

You have your teaching cert, Rog?  I think you'd make a kickass teacher.  And yeah, it'd have to be at one of those private, "progressive" schools.

No, I said "qualified", not "certified".

I'm the last fucking Patrick Henry in this goddamn state.  And there are no private progressive schools in Tucson.  The private schools are either WalMart-esque horror stories, or nice, White schools where proper young Christians are turned into monsters.

And the public schools?  They have no spine.  None.  I'd last a week, before some horrified parent complained that I mentioned the Phillipine-American war as an example of historical US violations of the constitution and our principles, and then I'd be lynched from the flagpole.

Also, I'd be paid about a fifth of what I get paid now, and as attractive as the idea of warping young minds is, I have to support 6 people now (Mother, father, kids, niece).

...you'd have to be sure they knew wtf the Phillippine-American war even WAS, first.  ;)

But yes, I get your meaning...you describe aptly the same school system I grew up in here in So Cal, the armpit region, what I call the "Bible Belt."  Scary ass place, really, if you're a so-called "free-thinker."  Any notion not directly related to Jesus is a "get-thee-behind-me-Satan."

Which is why I didn't learn the difference between Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam until I went to college.
