Cleaning

What is the nature of this thing we call cleaning anyway? Certainly there is a hygenic aspect, removing decay and pathogens which foster disease, but there is also an aesthetic aspect. When most people refer to cleaning it is of both parts, the cleansing of materials and surfaces, and the organization and clearing of spaces into tidyness. The former makes sense from a physical/physiological standpoint, and the latter makes sense from a psychological standpoint. The space we live in alters the space of our minds to some extent; a cluttered space will distract and detract from clarity and focus, whereas a tidy, decluttered space will amplify clarity and focus. The space is an object of subconscious cathexis.

My wife and I have similar conflicts.

Mrs. LMNO: "The house is filthy!"
Me: "Actually, it's just cluttered.  I'll straighten up."

:glub, burble, splatter:

Me: "The sewer line just erupted out of the sink.  Now the house is filthy."

In my house, it seems like cleaning is like a war that has just about come to a stalemate.  It's like you're just barely ahead of the clutter, but it's only temporary.  We always say, "Okay, we're going to do better to keep this neat and organized".  And 2 weeks later we're at it again.  I also think I've discovered that I'm becoming somewhat OCD as I get older.  It's like, if I don't clean that NOW, I can't do anything else.  It drives my wife nuts, especially when I insist on doing some straightening when it's time to eat dinner.

As Concordian as it sounds, I find the need to make daily routines in order to keep the house neat.  This is why our house always gets trashed during the holidays.

How is that concordian?

Yeah, I know.  I'd still prefer if machines did it for me, though.

I have a Roomba.  It's awesome, and it scares the cat.   SCIENTIFICALLY.

That's precisely the kind of science I'm interested in.

Man oh man, recurring Discordian flaw?

Our house will get completely cleaned, spotless straightened and a week later its like we're recovering from a hurricane.

Two months ago we instituted the "Plastic bag" policy. Once a week, stuff goes back where it belongs, or it goes in a plastic bag which is dropped into the trash.

The house is still a cluttered mess :-/

I don't clean the house, bathroom aside, which takes about 10 minutes (because we have another toilet, and two people use the en suite shower).

However, since I will be the sole resident of this property....6 days from now, I will have to start.  I intend to listen to a Lady Gaga/BEARFORCE1 medley until every room is spotless.

Concordes also get trashed during the holidays.

Perhaps you need more troops, and  keep promising a withdrawal date for your house, but never actually leave.
