There are no stars here.

In fact, there are no stars within 30 miles of Vegas.  I looked up as I approached the city 30 miles out and realized that there were stars behind me, but none in front or above.  The light pollution coming off this city is so intense that I could see the glow from 90 miles away, I was still in Arizona (being in Arizona is, incidentlly a gut wrenching experience, I nearly vomited all over the crappy rental car in the 5 minutes I was there, I don't know how Roger does it).

But I love this place despite the lack of stars, there is money here, opulence beyond all reason, or even belief, but no class at all.  And mixed together are perhaps the funniest elements of America.  After the billboards advertising the adult mega stores in one extolling the virtues of God, and across from the giant picture of a stripper is one of Donnie and Marie Osmond, all squeaky clean.

Oh and there are churches in the strip malls.

But of course you won't see this tonight so I can't ask you all were the best (read, most fucked up) place in Vegas is, because despite staying in the nicest goddamn room I've ever been in (there are more big screen TVs in this room than in some third world countries, and the toilets have buttons on them, though I dare not press them.) the internet is broken.

I just watched my father lose a thousand dollars in winnings.  In about an hour.  It's insidious really, as I'm trying to get him to quit while he's ahead, the waitress comes in and keeps getting him more wasted (I swear she spiked my coffee too).

I for my part got up 5 dollars and change, and am holding onto it with a deathgrip, just so I can say I'm the only person to leave Vegas with more money than I started this week.  Unless of course the internet starts working, and you get to read this in time to give me something to spend it on something more interesting than virtual slot mchines.  (Seriously, I want my giant pile of quarters, when the fuck did slot machines pay out little slips of paper with your total losses instead of quarters?).

The internet now works apparently, its the most fucked up thing I've seen, and informs me that I can pay or get access to certain free sites (which I would never consider visiting).

I figure I should check the price so I can figure out how much I'm not paying them before looking for a Starbucks, and it turns out the price is $0.00.

everyone should experience vegas.  i think there's a reason so many movies take place there.  it doesn't seem like it should exist - but it does.

There is some kind of beeping.  It's coming from the kitchenette and won't go off if you stand in the area, we already had the facilities people up here.

Beep beep beep beep.

Beep.

I finally got on the phone with some people and my drunk assed brother hung up the phone on me.  I need an ax.

Anyone ever think about how Richter inhabits the same reality as you and just scream and scream and scream, but in a good way?   :lulz:

Keep going, Requia.  We'll get a novel out of this yet.

The Good Reverend Roger

Vegas, alongside Disneyland, represents most of what is rotten and wrong about the American Nightmare™.

I have some thoughts on this, but I'd like Requia's say-so before I post them, because I don't want to hijack the thread.

"Billy, when I say that ethics is our number one priority and safety is also our number one priority, you should take that to mean exactly what I said. Also quality. That's our number one priority as well. Don't look at me that way, you're in the corporate world now and this is how it works."

I'm with you on Disney, but not with Vegas.  I think Vegas represents everything that is fantastic about North America.

Someday I'd like to go to Vegas to enjoy the free drinks and the free food and the free horrormirth.

I believe that I have enough self control and dignity to refrain from gambling. In a sort of morbid curiosity, I feel the need to challenge myself and see if that's actually true.

Also, I like drinks, food, and horrormirth, especially when they're free.
Be the trouble you want to see in the world.

I was there recently... maybe I was in the wrong places but there's not much that's free there that I saw.  I only gambled once... I played the same $20 in blackjack for an hour, and went I went up $5 I packed it in.  The house always wins?  Not with Hoopla around!

Yes, hispanic workers flipping hooker trading cards at you on every street corner.

That's the north america i love.
We appear to be doomed by our DNA to repeat the same destructive behaviors our forebears have repeated for millenia. If anything our problem solving skills have actually diminished with the advent of technology & our ubiquitous modern conveniences. & yet despite our predisposition towards fear-driven hostility; towards what we anachronistically term primitive behavior another instinct is just as firmly encoded in our make-up. We are capable as our ancestors were of incredible breathtaking acts of kindness. Every hour of every day a man risks his life at a moments notice to save another. Forget for a moment the belligerent benevolent billionaires who grant the unfortunate a crumb of costfree cake. I speak of pure acts of selflessness. A Mother who rushes into the street to save a child from a speeding vehicle. A person who runs into a burning building to reach a family trapped on the upper story. Such actions, such moments, such unconscious selfless decisions, define what it is to be human

What's not to love there?  You think they'd allow that kind of bullshit in Iran?  That's your freedom being flicked right there.
