Quote"This is a stunner," said Donald F. Roberts, a Stanford communications professor emeritus who is one of the authors of the study. "In the second report, I remember writing a paragraph saying we've hit a ceiling on media use, since there just aren't enough hours in the day to increase the time children spend on media. But now it's up an hour."

Apparently kids are now packing 11 hours of media into 7 and a half hours spent on media devices per day (yes, I know that doesn't make sense, but consider multi-tasking).

That is an incredible amount of media.  I would've liked more info on exactly what sort of media they were consuming, not just the types of media but exactly what they were consuming, whether it was educational (unlikely), pop-culture orientated, entertainment news etc etc

I think there is a real and growing divide in society between those who consume media and those who produce it.  I know I find it hard to keep up with all the reading I want to do and all the shows I watch, while still writing rants for here, keeping two blogs going and working on other creative projects.  And I have way more free time than most people.  I really worry that an inundation of media can reduce people to passive consumers, and that passivity then spreads from their media habits to other behaviours.

I, uh... it's just... buh...
HHHHHHHHHHHHHRRRRNGH! :asplode:

I realize it's an old gripe, "Kids are watching too much teevee and playing too many video games!", but... dear god. And knowing that so much of it is music videos on YouTube and whatever the most popular shows are these days just makes me feel worse.

Verbal Mike

I dunno, there's an equilibrium at some point in the future, but it's obvious that as these things go, most things will be unbalanced most of the time, with the result of everything being more-or-less balanced all of the time, on average. Let's see how this all pans out in a decade or two. People have been worried to death about media making us passive for ages now, yet the proliferation of media has been playing a crucial role in Iran, in protests in Israel (my mother just gushed about this), in raising awareness and funds for Haiti disaster relief... I wouldn't be too quick to panic, even if these instances of media being a tool for activity seem rare and far apart.
Unless stated otherwise, feel free to copy or reproduce any text I post anywhere and any way you like. I will never throw a hissy-fit over it, promise.

Dysfunctional Cunt

Based on my kids, I'm going to bet on the combination of any of the following...

Talking on cell
Texting on cell
Web surfing on cell
Listening to music from cell, mp3, ipod etc
On computer
Playing video game

Combine those for 2 hours each and that's an easy 11 hours.....

I've been sensing this shift for a while now. Media = Soma but with a twist - State is fast losing control of media production and delivery. This leaves the back door open for the would be media terrorist to work his magic on a horde of passive consumers. Motive is neither political or financial, simply to see the looks on their faces, to make a legion of zombies stutter and dance for ones own personal amusement.

We need to step on this bandwagon chaps cos when it kicks off it's going to be short lived and gloriously messy and you don't want to miss the opportunity for epic lulz while there's still a humanity left to squeeze it out of
