No. I'm serving it from a first generation pentium four in my bedroom with a broken hard disk and 128 megs of ram. Trust me on this: the network is not the bottleneck.

After my duron kicked the bucket entirely, I had to build a new server. After the great motherboard shuffle, the machine that worked best ended up being a first generation P4. I filled all the slots with ram, and it wasn't much. The hard disk was one I had salvaged from my parents' computer (I removed it because it was head crashing and doing fandango-on-FAT). It was four times the size of anything I had that was working (it's still more than twice the size of my second biggest disk), so I stuck it in to see how long it would hold up under a proper filesystem. That was more than a year ago, and only once has it corrupted a file (the file it corrupted was one of my IRC logs, after a big back and forth complete with multiple reboots, power outages, and several people kicking the machine and shaking the house), so it doesn't owe me a damned thing. I am not particularly keen on replacing it, because it means I need to dedicate six of my bigger spare hard disks and several days dedicating the network in order to back it up, then build another machine to be the server (since this one can't support that many disks).
