Trouble broke out after the leader of Greece's biggest union, Yannis Panagopoulos of the GSEE was attacked by three assailants, as he addressed demonstrators.

TV pictures subsequently showed officers spraying gas into the face of veteran left-winger Manolis Glezos, who is in his mid-80s.

Mr Glezos is one of the country's most beloved figures because of his exploits during the World War Two, when he climbed the Acropolis walls to tear down the swastika during the Nazi occupation.

Greece's two main unions have called another general strike on 11 March, arguing that the austerity cuts put forward by the prime minister are "anti-popular" and "barbaric".

Athens has seen a number of recent attacks blamed on leftist militants.

Bomb attacks earlier this month targeted the home of a Pakistani community leader and the office of a far-right anti-immigration group.

Earlier attacks targeted banks and government buildings and were attributed to far-left or anarchist groups.

think we are seeing an earlier tactic used by the left, now being used by the right to keep up bad PR

Leaders of the 16 eurozone nations have agreed to fund up to 30bn euros (£26bn) in emergency loans for debt-hit Greece, if the country wants the cash.

The price of the loans will be fixed using IMF formulas, and be about 5%.

He also said that the eurozone countries had not decided to activate the loans, as this would depend on a decision by the Greek government.

Angry protesters marched through Athens shouting: "Hands off our rights! IMF and EU Commission out!"

Ericos Finalis, who was taking part in the march, described the planned government cutbacks as "the biggest attack on workers for centuries. They want to return us to the 19th Century - this is not going to be a battle but a war that will last for months or even years," he was quoted by AFP as saying.

There is huge public resistance to the wage cuts, tax rises and pension reductions that are expected to be implemented.

Our correspondent says the unions hope that the rallies will demonstrate to the government, the eurozone, the IMF and the international markets, that they can mobilise enough "troops" to defeat the new austerity programme.

EU wary of Greece seeking IMF help

BERLIN — Who's afraid of the IMF? Greece is betting that the major European Union powers just might be.

The heavily indebted Balkan country, facing German and French reluctance to pony up and help bail it out as a fellow euro user, has declared it may turn to the Washington-based international lending agency.

Greece is asking for almost 7 billion dollars,
guessing most of that will be fancy riot gear and tanks

Greek Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou has warned Greece is two weeks away from defaulting on part of its debt; bonds worth 8.5bn euros ($12bn; £7.2bn) fall due on 19 May.

The Thai military says security forces plan to surround a protest encampment in Bangkok with armoured vehicles. A spokesman said that routes into the sprawling encampment would be closed at 1800 (1100 GMT). Protesters would be free to leave but not enter, he said.
The move comes a day after the government announced and then cancelled a plan to cut off water and power supplies to the protesters. The group have been occupying key parts of the capital since 14 March. They want Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve parliament and call fresh elections.
