Also, for me, substance needs a certain percentage of fluff to ever get born, or I burn out. Sometimes there will be a flurry of substance that's AWESOME, but after a while all the substance starts to sound the same, and I realize that the originality left because everyone got too focused. A good round of fluff gives the brain downtime, regenerative time, and then new, fresh, original substance condenses from the fluff.

Further, if the general ratio of substance to fluff is 10%, more fluff means more substance.

Plus, a designated complaining zone might even

A: help keep whining out of Or Kill Me, and

B: become a source of inspiration, through the emergence of repeating themes, for good rants that aren't just a fancy form of complaining about housemates of friends or significant others.

That's my justification, anyway.

Or Kill Me.

I predict this thread will hit 100 pages in one month or less.

Just imagine all of the individual complaint threads that won't get started because this one exists to keep it all in! Sort of like how it would be if people actually used the "random links" and "youtube" threads.

I can't.  I don't feel special enough when I have to post with everyone else.

Dok,
Whore in search of a thread title.

This.  I pretty much shot my wad over the last 2-3 months, and I need to accumulate more hate before I can spew again.

I'm complaining about this thread, since we already have "Apple Talk Bodega" which has turned into mostly a big whine-fest, and since I don't really care about what's wrong with any of your lives anyway and have been getting quite sick of reading about everyone's drama and problems for the last few months.

Life sucks. Get a helmet.

yeah I find myself only clicking on about 20% of the threads in apple talk these days because so many of them are about the weather or personal drama or whatever. I'm sure I've done my part to contribute to it, but this subforum is really giving my mouse wheel a work out.  :p I'm sure some of you have noticed I've been posting a lot less recently - it's basically just that I don't want to add to the noise.

Not everything has to be substance.  Sometimes noise is enough.

"noise" doesn't have to be pointless whining about your personal life, though. That shit is annoying IRL and it's just as annoying here. If someone in my living room was doing it constantly, I'd throw something at their head and tell them to GTFO. Basically, no one cares what's fucked-up in your life unless you can relate it in a way that makes it funny. For example, coming up with the MSY series as a way to relate the struggles of a mid-life career hiccup? (my take on it, not sure at all if that's what was in your head when you wrote it) Fucking brilliant. But all this "boo-hoo I like someone and they don't like me back" or "boo-hoo, someone likes me but I don't like them but don't want to hurt their poor little feelings" or "boo-hoo my work sucks and I don't enjoy the results of the choices I made in life" or "boo-hoo my family is mean to me" BULLSHIT is getting really fucking tired. That shit sunk EB&G. They used to have our monthly post count nearly doubled and now I check it every month or 2 and there's 20 new posts in that whole time and 15 of them are in the "CURRENT MOOD" thread. Let's not let PD go down that path just because we have an overdeveloped sense of familiarity with each other.

Well, putting it in one thread makes easy enough to ignore. A ghetto, like I said. Unless you think having a designating whining zone will sink the forum.

Anyway, I think I am coming down with a cold. It's very uncomfortable and is making various parts of my head feel burny.

You bring up a couple of points that make me distinctly uncomfortable.  This will now provoke a predictable outburst from me:

You're one of those troublemakers, right?  One of those people that don't like having nice things, and want to wreck it all for the Good Americans.  One of the No People, like those people from tiny countries that make chocolate for us, or send people to burn their crotches off on our airplanes.  One of the people that demand things from us, instead of giving us the good things we deserve by virtue of being of the elect.  One of the people who think smudgy people should be allowed to run around all unregulated.

Stop hating America™, ECH, and our American right to complain loudly and publicly about things that nobody cares about, but should.  Because it's about me, ECH.  And I'm special, like a snowflake.  And we all know what color they are, right?

I'm with you ECH. It's not the substance : fluff ratio that I care about, it's the signal : noise ratio.

Sometimes people bitching about their love lives is signal. Most of us are friends, and I do care what's going on in your lives.  To a point.

Noise is anything that isn't very interesting to read. When people are venting and nobody's responding, it's noise. Nearly 100% of the threads about the weather are noise. If people are bitching about something inane in a way which is entertaining to read or respond to, I consider it signal.

I admit I might just be getting increasingly narrow minded about what I consider Signal.

I think we all need a filthy assistant.

I have one, but he didn't come in today because it's a holiday and his kids aren't in school, or somesuch ridiculous excuse.  :argh!:

Isn't that what filthy assistants are for?  (IE not doing their job and giving you something to complain about)

I think people are going to whine anyways, and if they put it in here, like Nigel said, rather than making a new thread for it every time, or posting it in Or Kill Me, that both keeps it from spamming things up and gives you a thread to conveniently ignore.

Personally I like reading posts people put up whining about their own lives (except Kel's for some reason, hers annoy me for no reason I can put my finger on) because it makes me feel better about my own fucked up life.

:lulz: that doesn't surprise me.

This place is a swirling vortex - we may be moving forward, but we're constantly passing familiar points.

I mean, I was just reading posts from 2007 and found a diatribe I wrote about why everybody who dislikes RAW can eat ten dicks. And now I want to bump that thread just to flame myself. All of us are doomed to go round and round the goatse vortex.

Jenne

Well, as someone that contributes more or less to various signals and some of the noise (I spent a lot of time in Aneristic Delusions AND Or Kill Me as well as TFY,S this shift), I think the only thing that killed EB&G recently was that even if people posted so-called content (one man's content is another man's fluff, just saying), no one responded.

Fluff doesn't get responded to, either.

So it's LACK OF POSTING that kills, not the other way around.

Beside, ECH, you ALWAYS but ALWAYS turn it around on EB&G.  It's tiring, as tiring as whining about whining is.
