An Arab man convicted in Israel of rape because he pretended he was a Jew when he had consensual sex with a Jewish woman has called the verdict racist.

Sabbar Kashur, 30, was found guilty of "rape by deception" by the Israeli court and sentenced to 18 months in jail.

According to the complaint filed by the woman, the two met in a Jerusalem street in 2008 and had sex that day.

When she discovered he was not Jewish, but an Arab, she went to the police.

Kashur was arrested and charged with rape and indecent assault, but the charges were later replaced by a different charge of "rape by deception".

But according to Kashur, he did not pretend to be Jewish.

He told reporters that he is known by friends and family by the nickname Dudu, which is more commonly used by Jews called David.

He has been under house arrest for two years, he said.

"If I were Jewish, they wouldn't have even questioned me," the Haaretz newspaper quoted him as saying.

"That's not called rape, I didn't rape her in the forest and and throw her away naked. She agreed to everything that happened."

Well, I guess all those Arab Israelies aren't gonna throw themselves in prison.

That is fundamentally the same as if I had sex with a white man who assumed I was Italian, and then went to the police and accused me of "rape by deception" when he asked me and I told him I'm part black.

If he wasn't circumcised, this woman really needs mental help. Otherwise, I still think she does.

Yeah.  Also it's Israel so I imagine, like say in the USA, circumcision is routinely practiced regardless of race or religion.

Also, it should be noted he is an Israeli-Arab, not necessarily a Muslim.  There are large Arab Christian communities in that part of the world, and they also feel the full brunt of the racism that is quite prevalent (and, at the moment, politically encouraged) in Israel.  Or he could even be secular, there is a long history of interaction between Arab and Socialist/Marxist groups in that region, and I believe the major Israeli-Arab political party is social democratic in orientation.

People go to court for stupid reasons all the time, but a conviction...That sets a horrifying precedent.
