Yeah but it kinda slows down the more refined you make it. I kinda hit a wall where I could do even more detail but I'm losing the will to live. That's where the real photorealists would plough another 100 hours in and do the kinda shit that I'm pretty sure I could do if I only had the stomach for it. ATM I'm looking at artists that get really realistic results with a lot less brushstrokes. Like this It's a matter of really tightening up the lighting and then dialling back the brush strokes. Bigger, bolder, more direct...

Yeah, art's labor intensive. And if you sell it, people have the idea that the cost of materials plus a little tip extra is a fair price. Never mind the WEEKS you put into it.

If you ever do start selling (and you could, it's more than good enough) one hint: When doing portraits, charge by the head. Otherwise you'll end up doing an entire family for the price of one pic.

Okay so Steampunk Battletoad is driving me mental! Prolly end up leaving it to the last minute like I usually do with comp entries. Meantime I haz cleaned up my potrait process, mainly by giving up my eye addiction, cold turkey. Usually my detail kinda spreads out from the eyes, via the nose and mouth but this time I'm forcing myself to concentrate on different passes, each with a level of detail what matches overall. I don't know why I'm doing this, only that it feels more disciplined and, so far, it seems to be producing a more even, more consistent workflow. Maybe a bit faster too.

Start with a b&w processed source pic of Samuel T. Shifter

Trace the shapey stuff and the eyes, very important to get the eyes traced very precisely.

1st layer. Scribble in the light and dark bits and ... OMFG those eyes look terrible. Surely I can't just leave it like that :x

blur the 1st layer. At least the eyes don't look so bad now but c'mon, seriously. PUPILS?????

Next we do another shading pass, this time with an soft airbrush. Okay so at this point I may or may not have paid an inordinate amount of attention to the eyes.

I felt a bit guilty so I ... BLURRED IT, all Gaussian-like. I felt like I'd died a little inside but it was a good death, a noble death. I gave my life for a greater cause

A little bit of tidy up and we can dispense with the outline. Good! Now it doesn't feel like I'm a little baby, colouring-in with crayons

OFUK, yeah - background

... and blur

And a spot of tweak

Right, fuck the background. That'll do.

Hair

And shadow. Dark as fuck cos there's a fuckton of layers going to be going over it to lighten it up

Next I lock the tranny on the hair layer and shade the individual strands.

another two or three of those with decreasing brush sizes and we'll have ourselves a barnett

TBC...

I like the way the first few look like "oh shit, this isn't gonna work" but by the fourth one it's obvious you're gonna nail it. :D

TBH it gets easier the more you do it. This was my first portrait about 9 months ago

sucked the sweat off a dead man's butt but I could see how I could do it better. Started paying more attention to what I liked rather than what I didn't like - that made a big diff. I'm really enjoying this cos I know I can still take it further, get better. It's a buzz.

Yeah, that takes a bit of perseverance. Sometimes I'm like all "fuck no I can't do this anymore" and shit. The first couple of times it was really hard to push through that feeling cos I had only pulled it off once or twice. Maybe it was beginners luck? Self doubt is my worst enemy but, the more I get a result I'm happy with the more positive reinforcement. I get used to seeing the initial stages. It's less of a shock to me now  :D

Man THIS is some nice fucking photoshop.  This is the level I always wanted to achieve but never put enough time into it before I gave away my wacom.  An X of mine pretty damn decent drawing in shop but not this good.

Tell me you make money doing this.  You're good P3nT.

Triple Zero

nice work!

I always love checked or striped shirts when drawing, because by curving the straight lines in clever ways you can really bring out the shape of the clothes and wrinkles and everything in a way I find much easier than trying to do with shadows.

Also I just watched that Wacom Intuos 4 youtube vid you posted  NOW I WANT ONE what do they cost?

IIRC mine was about 350-400 quid. I shopped around and got a great deal, picking up a large for just over the price of a medium

How much would you want to do something from a photo? I know it's hours and hours and probably not cheap, but I wouldn't mind getting one done later when I've got more cash...it'd make a great birthday gift for somebody.  :)

If it's a print you're after check out the prices of my prints on Deviant. I can vouch for the quality. If I do one for you it'll be a tiny bit cheaper cos I'll knock off my markup for ya Markup is only a couple of dollars on the big ones IIRC means fuck all to me.

ETA: Very important you get as good a photo as possible and as many megapixels as you can lay your hands on.
