Very cool! Suitably epic choice of music for the imagery! It's not been clear to me, is Marty the goblin or the steed? The Assassination of Marty if the goblin, the Liberation of Marty if not methinks.

Marty is the manticore. He was the original sculpt. All the rest just grew in round about him.

So the GL output from Medium is a PITA to work with and the results are GL as fuck. The alternative is import into blender and hook up to cycles render pipeline which takes three times as long as the fucking sculpt and is just monotonous clicking and sliding little settings about. So I hardly ever do it. Decided to make the effort for Goblin Fight Promoter (Ha, I like that!). Feel like it was worth it.

Duuude! I don't know what GL is, but the glow effect is neato!

The light from that cigar is the only light you've seen since being dragged underground... you have no idea how long ago anymore. You stand up to fight, knowing well by now that the screams you've heard are the ones that refused or just talked too much*

Lol, wild! GL is not proper render. Just fake output from video card. This second last pic was GL you should be able to see how the lighting was isn't quite right, highlights where there shouldnt be and stuff. Last pic took 5 minutes for blender to calculate. Proper shadows and highlights and even funky sub surface scattering where the light picks up a red tinge passing through the ears and whatnot.

Hm... i see a bit of the lighting inconsistencies in the second pic. He appears toplit with a fairly normal white light and the cigar stub is giving a much stronger sort of counter-light. With the black background it looks menacing as hell despite that. Maybe even because of it.

The first one with the cool lit background looks more emotive like. Almost soulful by comparison. Like he was almost feeling sorry about what he's looking at.

For shiggles try covering up the left and right sides of the second pic alternatively. First I made it symmetrical like this


Then a dude on facebook dared me to "break symmetry" which is a thing in digital sculpting where the symmetry mode mirrors what you do on one side of the plane so it's half the work to make a face but totally symmetrical faces look just fucking wrong. Uncanney valley kinda shit so once the bulk of the work is done you turn off symmetry mode and work on making each side just a bit different. You can moles and scars and just generally fiddle about with shit so it looks more natural.

So I decided to practice expressions but I had two in mind - "Goblin has no requirement for the bullshit you offer" and "Goblin regrets choices he made in life that brought shame on himself and the horde". Couldn't make up my mind which to do so I decided to try half of each and see what happened.



First pic was just slightly rotated in favour of the sad side. Second one is pretty much straight-on. So it turned out that rotating the head gives me emotional volume control for the final shot. Like a crossfade from mean to sad. I kinda like the juxtaposition so I framed it straight on.

God of War

He was originally going to have a full helmet but everything I tried was teh suck but I totally wanted the crest so I ended up just bolting it on his skull. Think it went better with the look I was going for - "I'm Mars and I will fucking anybody!"

Having it bolted to his head does in fact add that certain indefinable "oh shit RUN!!" factor so very desirable on the fashionable battlefield.
