There seems to be a thriving trade in human body parts from NATO troops in Afghanistan:

http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,2216412,00.html - skulls!
http://newsone.com/world/associatedpress3/u-s-soldiers-charged-with-collecting-fingers-of-dead-afghan-soldiers/ - fingers AND skulls!

Weird, I wonder what's going on with this sort of thing...

THough, I do recall a case of grave desecration in Fitchburg, MA a couple of years ago where some guy stole a skull from a cemetary and made it into an ashtray. Not a new thing but always wtf to hear about.

This seems to be a trophy thing, among the troops.  As far as I've read at least.  I know it's not exactly the same kind of trophy taking as, say, serial killers do, but it's close enough to make me think about what all these death squads are gonna do once their service is up.

Oh, this seriously worries me.

I am surrounded by empty skulls. They are still attached to the living for now.

I swordfight with a few of them on the weekends.  They vary from shitstacks to awesome folks, but I have no illusions about who would win if we REALLY threw down.

Anyone ever think about how Richter inhabits the same reality as you and just scream and scream and scream, but in a good way?   :lulz:

They go to work for organized/unorganized crime or freelance demanding that everyone they kill they get to keep a part of.

Ooh, maybe when America has had a long and tragic past like Europe we will have cathedrals made of skeletons too.

That was pretty much my thinking.  Although they'd be the last to come back. the money to keep the little psychopaths out there will eventually run out and they're going to have to get their jollies somehow.  And it's not like the three letter agencies and SOCOM are going to pick up their own trash either.  Probably find their way to the PMCs, in the best case scenario, and allowed to run loose in the worst.

The shit part?  It just stirs the Talibs (the Afghan Talibs, the newer brands of them in the villages) even more, because of the insult to Muslims by desecrating a dead body like that.  Ugh.  Dumbasses.

Jasper

...Exacerbating an already unfixable problem.  Nice.

Cain

I think the main problem is that foreign troops are occupying their country.  Historically this has been known to piss people off even when the occupying troops act like saints.

Jasper

The unfixable problem, of course, is that they won't be able to install a capitalistic democracy no matter how many dead bodies they refrain from mutilating.

Cain

Indeed.  It is amusing watching the United States become the mirror image of the Soviet Union though, you have to admit.  The above was a reply more to Jenne, really.  Besides, I'm pretty sure those same Talibs would have no qualms about mutiliating the bodies of foreign soldiers, since, as usual, such rules don't apply to people outside of the Chosen Elect.  I mean, I'm pretty sure many American soldiers are Christians, who also tend to hold negative views of people disturbing the dead bodies...of other Christians.

No, I mean, you're right, but come on, this is just the sort of thing the Talibs wanted.  And the sort of behavior that points to the fact the US needs out.  Like, now.  Because Afghans can't be and WON'T be policed by anyone else.

Exactly, I mean, it's not like the US troops have NEVER taken trophies of their dead enemies before--I'm sure there's scads of history on it.  I remember reading about soldiers in the 19th century lopping off Native American womens' boobs and using them as pouches. :x

And yeah, it's not like the Talibs themselves are motherfucking saints--their predecessors certainly weren't.  My husband likes to retell the tales of how those taken for torture were held for a long ass time even past death as an extra insult, and then their body parts strewn around the street to add to it.  They all did it--the Communists, the Mujahideen...it's almost a ritualistic insult.

Which is why the "hearts and minds" bullshit is just that--if you're there to build roads and schools, make the people safe, then cutting off fingers and mounting skulls ain't gonna do you any good with THAT campaign...as if any of us believed that was really part of their training, of course.  Though my husband's cousin, the one who was an interpreter and is here on a student visa/now a green card, got along with the troops really fucking well.  It was thanks go the general he worked under he got here under that interpreter visa.
