Precisely.  I signed up here in my first year at Uni...six years ago now, in fact.  And that particular year especially, I had virtually no money.  Shit, I was living off ramen sandwiches and £5 bottles of "scotch".

Let's also keep in mind that really cool collaborations usually happen here after someone has stuck around for a while, and there wasn't much more than fluff and Chaos Magick back in '04.  Someone who lurks here probably won't find anything mindblowing at first, and given the choice to pay a dollar to say, "I like cheese" or go somewhere else, they're going to go somewhere else.

I agree with that.  That's pretty much what 05 was like for me when I joined.  It really gelled and came together for me in 06 when the whole PD 06 stuff started.  Hell, when it came to making a life-boat for PD during the big server crash and instability, I used a free service.  But then again, that did have some rather unsavory results.

The money issue isn't a problem, I get enough from people to cover most months, its if we want to expand our available server resources we would have to look at it again. The dollar thing is a token gesture that keeps out trolls, and I'm against it.

depends on how much people want to spend, I can allocate more ram on a sliding scale but it ups the cost thus using up whatever people donate faster.

There are 3907 members. If five percent donated ten dollars a year, that'd be more than enough for maintenance costs and upgrades, yeah? Maybe you should host a bake sale. Or start up that branding thing I believe Cramulus was talking about some months ago - start up a store for PD t-shirts and people can donate art to raffle off . . .

And then after that we can sit around a campfire and sing "Jesus Loves the Little Children". Nevermind. I think I was borrowing the plot of a Whoopie Goldberg movie or something.
