QuoteWASHINGTON — The Republican who will head the House committee that oversees domestic security is planning to open a Congressional inquiry into what he calls "the radicalization" of the Muslim community when his party takes over the House next year.

Representative Peter T. King of New York, who will become the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said he was responding to what he has described as frequent concerns raised by law enforcement officials that Muslim leaders have been uncooperative in terror investigations.

You know the greatest irony about all this?  Peter King has frequently travelled to Northern Ireland to speak with IRA members, has spoken at pro-IRA rallies and has called the IRA "the legitimate voice of dissent in Ireland" against "British imperialism".  He has also been involved with the group NORAID, who raise funds to allow the IRA to buy weapons.

So in other words, Peter King is definitely compensating for something with his comments about Muslims, and that thing is his own dirty past and involvement in international terrorism.

QuoteOf course, it makes sense for King to malign a particular segment of the population, rather than to focus on terrorism itself.

And that is because of Peter King's own record of sympathy for terrorism.

An extraordinary 2005 profile of King by the conservative New York Sun told the story of King's long and deep involvement with the terrorist Irish Republican Army (IRA) and, even more damning, his support for Irish Northern Aid (NORAID), a U.S.-based group accused of funneling guns and money to the IRA. According to the Sun:

QuoteMr. King's support for the IRA was unequivocal. In 1982, for instance, he told a pro-IRA rally in Nassau County: "We must pledge ourselves to support those brave men and women who this very moment are carrying forth the struggle against British imperialism in the streets of Belfast and Derry."

King was defending the IRA while it was engaged in serious violence.

QuoteThe IRA took its campaign to Britain - where London's financial district was twice devastated by bombs - and to mainland Europe, where British NATO bases were frequently targeted. The IRA nearly killed Prime Minister Thatcher and her cabinet with a bomb in 1984, and it assassinated prominent British politicians and members of the royal family.

King's support for the IRA was so outspoken that "by the mid-1980s, the authorities on both sides of the Atlantic were openly hostile to Mr. King. On one occasion, a judge threw him out of a Belfast courtroom during the murder trial of IRA men because, in the judge's view, 'he was an obvious collaborator with the IRA.' When he attended other trials, the police singled him out for thorough body searches."

In 1984, "the Secret Service listed him as a threat when President Reagan made a trip to Nassau County to watch a Special Olympics event."

Fortunately, in the 1980's, there was no headline-seeking House chairman to investigate the entire Irish-American community because of the activities of Peter King and his friends. After all, who could seriously suggest demonizing a community of millions of law-abiding citizens because of the actions of a few terrorist sympathizers? NORAID and other IRA-supporting groups were, quite properly, investigated. Not a whole population.

But now here is Peter King determined to find terrorism-supporters under every Muslim bed. Better, he should look in the mirror.

QuoteA birther trampled over the reading of the Constitution in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) was reading Section 1, Article 2, of the famed document, which relates to a person's eligibility to be President, when the protester cried out from the gallery.

"Except Obama, except Obama, help us, Jesus!" she can be heard yelling via C-SPAN.

According to Dave Weigel at Slate.com, the woman, Theresa Cao, is "a birther activist and supporter of court-martialed birther Lt. Col. Terry Lakin."

The only thing Peter King did that was okay in my book, was side with my grandmother during our Sallie Mae debacle as she's in his district. After that though, he's just an ass. A typical Long Island ass.

Repeal health care? Give up your own first!

"It was a central value to us when we passed health care, and a central value to the American people, that members of Congress should get the same health care as everyone else. It seems unfair that house Republicans want to deprive middle-class Americans of the same health care as members of Congress but to keep it for themselves."

This idea seems great in the pursuit of keeping the glaring hypocrisy down, but I'm not so naive as to think it'll ever actually happen in a million years, either.
