Glittersnatch would be a rather unfortunate condition, if a halfway decent troll name.

Keith Olbermann being suprisingly level headed.

... You know, I wish Cory Doctorow would hurry up and conquer the world, so I could give all my whuffie to Olberman.

Richter

Barney Franks did an interview on MSNBC stating outright that while security is important, terrorist acts shouldn't shape what people do.  Shocking to hear that much sense.

Anyone ever think about how Richter inhabits the same reality as you and just scream and scream and scream, but in a good way?   :lulz:

Why is this so much more important than a cop getting shot, of a mother or a father?

Because all victims are equal, but some victims are more equal than others  :fnord:

Political violence is nothing new, and this is just the latest expression of it. Debate is much simpler when you kill your opponents, you get to win the argument by the simple expedient of replacing 1-person 1-vote with 1-bullet 1-vote, the ammo box speaks louder than the ballot box.

It may well turn out that the shooter is some delusional loner, sitting at home with his twisted logic and right-man complex. And whilst people of the Left and Right argue ad infinitum on the web about his political affiliation the truth (if we can ever get close to it) may be that he created his own fantasy world, lost his connection with other people, and that this is a result partly of our increasing isolation from each other as a society and as human beings.

The three of those on the same list is pretty strange, moreso than when taken alone.

There's a political party in Russia (if it's most current incarnation hasn't been banned) called the National Bolsheviks who would be quite down with the Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf on the same booklist.

I will consider this, but not on board yet.

It's quite simple.  If his act was politically motivated, how would you feel, if you were a card carrying and outspoken member of the Democrats in Tuscon?  I know if I was a public figure, I'd be looking at beefing up my security.

Strike the shepherd and the sheep will scatter.  When you attack a political figure for their convictions, you not only attack them but are also attempting to intimidate everyone of a similar persuasion.  You are using them as an example to frighten the rest.  Thus terrorism, in it's most classic and pure form.

If this was a politically motivated crime.  But I'd be very surprised if it was not.

I think we all see it being politically motivated. However, unless it turns out to be part of an organized group the terrorist is behind bars so the threat is gone. Humans doing stupid shit is nothing new.

Unless mentally ill, which is a rarity in and of itself, terrorists do not spring out of nowhere.  They are a product of the political environment in which they are situated.  There have been a number of violent attacks against minorities and liberal targets within America within the past few years, like the Glen Beck fan who shot up a Unitarian Church, or the Freerepublic poster who killed a guard at the Holocaust Memorial museum.  The judge who died recieved a number of death threats because he allowed illegal immigrants to file a lawsuit and rightwing radio stations kicked up a storm over it and encouraged the hysterial reaction.  There has been steady talk for years blaming every kind of imaginable and overblown ill on "the liberals" and equating liberal politicians and their supporters as traitors, fifth columnists and terrorist kissers.  Every time a "lone nut" like this gets slapped down, another ten take his place because no-one is interested in dealing with the root causes of terrorism, it's so much easier to play to the crowd and use it for short-term political gain.

I know if I lived in the current political climate in America, I would refuse to be drawn on political talk with strangers, invest in decent home security and practice with a gun frequently.

Mesozoic Mister Nigel

Oh, that isn't going anywhere good. If they follow through on this I would not be surprised if someone decided to open fire on them, perpetuating and escalating the cycle of violence.
"I'm guessing it was January 2007, a meeting in Bethesda, we got a bag of bees and just started smashing them on the desk," Charles Wick said. "It was very complicated."
