when i saw the catchphrase at the beginning, obviously being a riff off of, save the whales/rainforrest/spotted owl/fuzzy creature with big eyes/etc..... it seemed good because it was simple, humorous, and the cognitive dissonance of jamming the concept of 'war' into the slot generally occupied by fuzzy cuteness forces the reader to think 'why the fuck would i want to save that?!'

the suggestions here seem too frontal...
why not leave the concept of 'war' as an floating ideal not associated with any current politicized situation?

ETA: if you mention 'pulling the troops out', etc. the reader immediately reaches into his bag of talking points and defends his mind.  with the simple 'save the war' message, there's nothing to fight, really.  that's why i liked it.

I agree, mostly. I think it works well on it's own, with maybe some room for an image. The one you posted below was cool, but the World Warfare Fund concept needs explaination, which just adds more words, and the image isn't friendly and fuzzy enough. I think the challenge here is to find an image that convays the violence of war, but somehow makes it "friendly." Like maybe a tank version of "Thomas the Tank Engine" or something.

As far as the additional text and one-liners, we could save those for a seperate pamphlet. Y'know, have the "Save the War" poster on the wall and the accompanying pamphlet set on a table in front of it with a sign saying: "Free, Take One!"

words, yo.
i like the idea of a thomas the tank look...
i just scrambled that as an idea by googling 'black and white tank' and grabbed off the first page.
a cuter tank would work much better.  also i was just thinking of that as a little logo to go in the bottom corner of the poster, not as a primary image.
a separate pamphlet to riff off of the msg is good since the hook is already set.
although just leaving the meme with the dissonance dangling in their mind might be more effective in the long run, since if they get curious and pick up the pamphlet and it says 'message, message, change your perspective' they might just toss it, along with the original meme into the 'wrong people/wrong ideas' circular file, rather than pressing the 'remind me later' button where it will continue to haunt them every two days until they register, which they never will, because they don't know if they can trust it quite yet...

Maybe the tank could have fighter planes and destroyers for friends?

Actually, the next time there's an election things like this could be used in a faux campaign.

I think it needs to be a cartoon character. But it's the right direction fer sher. I'm sure someone here can draw something up, no? I s'pose if not, I could give it a try.

I would offer to try my hand at drawing it, but I don't have a scanner.

ETA: my suggestion to anyone who does, though, would be to make the cannon its nose.

A Tucsonite is like a Christian in several important ways.  For one thing, they believe what they say about their god in the most literal, straightfaced way possible.  For another, they both know their god can hear them.  The difference between the two, however, is quite vast in terms of their relationship with their god; Christians believe in His benevolence, but Tucsonites KNOW of The City's spite and hate.

This is my take on it. I liked best the nonsensical "eh, huh?" feeling I got from the original phrase. So I tried to incorporate that into this poster:

I tried to find the most serious-looking font for this. I think it's pretty serious (Monofonto Regular). Also I got the tank clipart from a site that said it was free (though it said a lot of things were free).
