Romney is doomed.  Trust me on this.

I hope so. He scares me.

Serious analysis:

Romney's assumption is that there's no way to win the election by moving to the center, because that will alienate half of his base and they'll stay home, and nobody likes him very much at either end, so a move to the center isn't likely to increase his chances anyway. He picked Ryan because it will shore up and energize the GOP base, adding Tea Party cred to the ticket. His strategy is to strengthen and fill out the GOP's base and maximize the number of likely voters, and hope that too many Dems just don't feel like going outside on election day. Ultimately, choosing Ryan says nothing about Romney's actual positions or beliefs (if he has any), but it says a lot about his having given up on winning over anybody sane.

ETA: I don't actually think this needs any more serious analysis than Roger's assumption that they're all a pile of bat shit crazy window-licking asylum cases, which is a perfectly adequate observation.

Which pretty much means that Romney's going to win this for sure.

Either Romney's going to win, or Obama's going to win. Either way, there's only a .5% chance that anything will change for the better - and if that happens, it'll have nothing to do with who won this election.

I'm really counting on global warming, here.

Excellent idea.

Romney's not looking good.  Any poll from before the middle of September is suspect for anything more than guaging the general mood of the country...and at most, these gave Romney 1-2% leads.  Just before Ryan, they were showing a much wider gap in Obama's favour, and while Ryan may rally the Teabaggers, I don't see him winning much in the way of moderate votes.

He really started to struggle around the time his "world tour" (shit, I can visit three countries in the space of an afternoon...on foot), though I'm not sure his terrible performance is related to the dip in the polls.

If the economy bombs, then I suspect there will be a greater amount of votes for Romney and more stay at home Democrats.  It is possible...the jobs report is getting worse, Europe is a mess, China is a mess....so far, the only good news for the Obama campaign is that Bibi's insane plan to attack Iran before the 2012 elections does not have the support of his cabinet....for now at least.

Daily Kos (Bias blah blah) posted an interesting article with several pics of batshit floridian headlines: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/08/12/1119510/-PANIC-MSM-Romney-is-in-Big-Big-Trouble

Somehow this makes me feel better.

We appear to be doomed by our DNA to repeat the same destructive behaviors our forebears have repeated for millenia. If anything our problem solving skills have actually diminished with the advent of technology & our ubiquitous modern conveniences. & yet despite our predisposition towards fear-driven hostility; towards what we anachronistically term primitive behavior another instinct is just as firmly encoded in our make-up. We are capable as our ancestors were of incredible breathtaking acts of kindness. Every hour of every day a man risks his life at a moments notice to save another. Forget for a moment the belligerent benevolent billionaires who grant the unfortunate a crumb of costfree cake. I speak of pure acts of selflessness. A Mother who rushes into the street to save a child from a speeding vehicle. A person who runs into a burning building to reach a family trapped on the upper story. Such actions, such moments, such unconscious selfless decisions, define what it is to be human

Another interesting side note-

The Green Party's pick for candidate is Jill Stein. What's interesting about this, is that she ran against Romney in 2002 for MA governor. Not sure if that's happened before- two candidates for president have run against each other for governor.

Probably can't, TBH.  :x

You mean the Europe where Ryan like ideas about austerity are increasingly and disturbingly popular, and everyone's budgets are subject to the whims of Germany?  Sure, our welfare systems are more developed, but they're under an equally sustained attack, and German fiscal policy makes deficit spending to stimulate the economy impossible, under EU law.  And in Europe, rather than have the dipshits out in the open, they're more diffuse and generally more suave, couching their terms in the language of economic and fiscal necessity and generally being members of European commissions that have no democratic accountability and that no-one has ever heard of.

The only country whose budget is not open to German revision is the UK, and our political class are all equally committed to cuts. The Tories have their own libertarian dipshits, who are only currently held at bay by the fact that David Cameron is personable on TV and they are not, and who would gladly welcome in the IMF to restructure the entire UK economy by the preferred method of privatising everything, especially education and the NHS.  And the UK is likely to follow the American route of political deadlock anyway, with no party commanding a majority and increasing unstable coalition governments taking charge, for the short term.

Thanks for this- I'll put it to some good use next time I hear about how Socialism is keeping Europe in a rough spot economically.
